I like cheese! Do you like cheese?

Posted on 12/18/2007 11:51:25 AM PST by HungarianGypsy

Inspired by a conversation with my best friend I wish to talk about cheese. Yummy, yummy cheese (for those of us not lactose intolerant)! What are your favorite cheeses? What is your favorite recipe with cheese. This thread is all cheese, all the time.

Nachos.

Oh, do I love cheese nachos. Nothing fancy, just sharp cheddar cheese on a tortilla chip. And of course jalapeno peppers. Nuke for one minute and yumm....

And for a different taste sensation, try swiss cheese nachos.

Heaven on Earth, let me tell you.....

I think they went out of business some time in the 1960s. It was too bad, because it was the "grapey-est" grape flavor of any grape drink before or since then.

THe logo looks vaguely familiar, but I don't think I ever tried it.

It was like grape Kool-Aid made with half the water or less. I think we liked it in the South because it was like getting communion in church, but you got to drink more than a tiny little thimbleful.

Your grandpa didn't keep a bottle of Mogan David under the sink to take a nip on the nights he needed some help falling asleep?

Welch’s is okay, but I like the other ones that I mentioned better.

Welll, not grandpa - they were teetotalers on that side of the family.

But grandma on the other side had Mogen David, for sure! No hiding it, tho - her doctor even prescribed her a glass of Taylor Golden Sherry per day, when she was up in years (90s), lol. We bought it for her by the case.

The Mogan David was on the teetotaling side of he family, which is probably why it was kept under the kitchen sink. lol

My other side of the family tho, met my great-grandma once. First thing she asked the adults who’d taken us to see her was where her beer was & none of the apples fell far from that tree.

I don’t think I’ve seen those sold where I live. Nor have I heard of them before now.

I’ve also found that patrons will always stop to watch a costumed person eat. I have no idea why. (Okay, there was that one time I was eating pine needles, so I can see that one. I’d have watched me too.)

LOL Pine needles? Do you take your show on the road or do you stick with one location?

Cheese generally.

Sharp, sharp cheddar itself.

Port wine spread on decent crackers.

Mozzarella shreds by themselves (never mind on the pizza).

Muenster was GREAT with honey ham on a sub on the Amtrack trains. No need for condiments of any kind - something I never do normally for sandwiches!

I figured they were both local. I think you can still buy the Black Bear in little glass bottles that come in a wooden case. Returnable glass bottles probably explains why a lot of small manufacturers remained local. They gained local niche markets & there was no reason to expand after the returnable glass bottles went the way of button shoes.

One location only, I'm afraid . . . I'm on cast at the Texas Renaissance Festival, where I play Juana la Loca, the insane queen of Spain.

One weekend this past season, my Conquistadors made me a lovely salad of pine needles and other assorted ground goodies and offered it to me.

The photographer was standing right there. What was I supposed to do?

That's right. So I did.

(What might have been in those pine needles does NOT bear thinking about. But comedy's not pretty.)

Mogen David. That's the only wine name I can ever remember. LOL!

BTW, I got the stuff for french onion soup (with mozarella) and for the ham loaf/

Too funny. Like you said tho, people will eat anything given to them by someone in costume, including those who are also wearing a costume themselves.

A friend of mine was in the cast at Bristol, WI, met a guy also working there, married him & moved to the other side of the border (Illinois). I haven't heard from her for years & they may be still working the Faire. Last I heard, she'd worked her way up to Royal governess.

Anyway, she used to do some "meets" off season, which is what I was talking about when I asked you if you ever took your show on the road. Do y'all even have an off season?

I considered auditioning for the AZ Ren. Fest, but thought it would be rude to tell them I had to miss one weekend for the cool SCA event down the street.

Well, I can figure out a Chipotle rub, no problem. I make my own spice blends all the time. I’d use:

Oregano
Dried Chipotle powder
Dried Garlic
Dried Onion Flakes
Kosher salt

I would use equal amounts of each, but less of the Chipotle powder. I’d blend that together and let it sit for a few days, mix that dry mix with venison burger and grill.

To make a paste for grilling on steaks or chicken, I’d then drizzle the mix with corn oil to make a “paste” and then use it.

If you want some great spices, try:

Husband spent close to $200 on cheeses for Christmas gifts. Wish I could get mad at him, but for some reason I just can’t, LOL!

(The aged white cheddar I sampled was amazing.)

*dying here*
*slobber*
*slaver*

I love white cheddar. I like it right along with dark chocolate. :o])

I just can’t find any good cheeses around here that fit within my budget. *sigh*

Maybe I should apply to Wisconsin to be a Ward of the State, so I could get my cheese and eat it, too?
