Many FReepers have knowledge to share about improving and maintaining health and would like to share it and learn from others; and others may not know much yet but want to learn. Some of us don't have much money for good insurance or doctors, some want to try other methods besides prescription meds, and some have experience in treating and solving health problems.

More and more "regular" doctors have accepted treatment methods such as the benefits of acupuncture, massage for many conditions, better diet, use of herbs and so on. There are limits, and often side effects, to some standard medical efforts.

My field is Ayurvedic herbalism and related measures, and have a lot of information I can post when I have time. I have seen herbs and sometimes dietary changes help people (including myself) with issues such as rheumatoid arthritis, high BP, gallstones, kidneystones, repeated boils, UTIs, prostate problems, insomnia, allergies, urinary incontinence, and many more. I hope to learn a lot from others with their knowledge and experience.

There are many "old fashioned" home care methods that were in common use a few generations ago that actually work and are cheap, such as castor oil packs, fomentations using alternating hot and cold water, and the like, which are easy to do. I am sure there is a lot of knowledge here on Free Republic that can be shared.

I would like this thread to stay civil without distruption, so my request is that people who think natural health methods are bunkum, make your own thread.

One of the things I do for a migraine is go to bed with a cold pad behind my neck.

Never thought of trying it when I do not have a headache.

Will try it for a month to see what happens.

Hi LJ, thank you for helping so many of us.

A friend of mine has a rash on her face. Nothing from doctors helps ( I am not surprised).

I heard that a topical application of ivermectin might help. A woman had a video that her rosacea was cured by a week of ivermectin. This was after 13 years of suffering under traditional medicine with no results.

My friend doesn’t have rosacea though. It is an inflamed area off to the side of her chin. Looks very painful.

She is a dear soul. A farm gal.

Any ideas on what might help?

I might bring her a tube of ivermectin and see if she will try it.

Thanks for your help.

Rashes on the face could have many causes. Is it localized, or all over her face? Does it itch or burn? Dry or scaley or peeling, bumpy or smooth, burning feeling, or oozing at all?

First of all NO SOAP or body wash of ANY KIND. Wash only with lukewarm water and if she wants, a small bit of oat flour made into a paste is a very soothing face washing method.

No sun at all. Keep very hydrated and avoid hot spicy food like garlic, Mexican, hot peppers, as well as very sour foods like pickles, sour fruits, etc.

Fresh aloe gel from a plant can be very healing and soothing for many skin problems. Gel from a bottle usually has preservatives that are irritating in themselves. The only preservative free Aloe product I know of (there may be more) is Lakewood brand. They have gel and juice I think, I buy on Amazon but it might be available locally. Organic, in a glass jar. Can be applied freely to the affected area.

Turmeric is also specific for any kind of inflammation, including skin problems. She can take as much as she can stand internally - in capsules, in golden milk, or how ever she can. Even more than 1 teaspoon a day, the more the better.

Regarding other herbal measures, I’d need to know more details. Keep me updated.

I just remembered one more very useful item - rosewater. Must be pure, food grade. Put in a spray bottle and apply to the fact, or lacking a spray bottle, pour some into the hand and pat on. One of the best things for skin in general, especially in any dry or inflamed condition. I spray on my face daily as my skin is prone to redness and irritation.

Cortas is one of the best brands on the market, there are other good ones but they have to be pure rosewater.

I just one had more idea. I had a small very itchy rash one time (not on my face) and NOTHING helped that the doctor provided (made it worse) so I started going through whatever I had in the house. I had some rice vinegar and it cured it. I deduced it was some kind of skin fungus. Skin fungus infections can occur, and they are cured by vinegar. Years later, a friend had a similar rash and vinegar did the job. Usually such skin irritations are quite localized.

Thank you so much!

My friend’s rash area is confined to one area, from one side near the mouth and extending in about a 3-4 inch patch radiating from there.

I am going to copy all your posts on this, and give the info to her Friday when I see her.

Many thanks for all the great ideas.

She will want me to thank you a million times for this wonderful help you have given her.

Doesn’t even have to be rice vinegar, that’s what I happened to have. Plain old white vinegar would work just as well, or any kind.

Hi there, can you tell me how many days you used vinegar on a rash? My friend has used it for 4 days so far. She says it stings a bit, but I think that is probably to be expected on a sensitive rash.

Oh my goodness, I don’t know how I missed your comment to me. I hope her rash is all better by now. 4 days should definitely clear it up. If it did not, then it is not a fungus infection. Yes, it did sting when I used it. PLease let me know how she is doing. I wish I had seen this...

Hi there! I will ask her how the rash is doing. Hopefully there is improvement. If not, I was considering topical ivermectin.

Pinging the list to herbs to help the thyroid gland.

Anyone who has been on synthroid (or other brandds) of thyroid medication, and would like to try either one of these herbs, should taper it. Iow start the herb and continue to take the medicine, and try lowering the dose of medicine slowly, very slowly, and see how you feel.

I was found to have low thyroid function about (??) 2003 I think, and had these symptoms:

Extra weight that would NOT come off although I never ate junk food, rarely had desserts or over-ate, was walking for exercise. I had no energy or even appetite, and exercise just tired me (I used to get energized by exercising). My nails were weak, hair got thinner, face was a bit puffy, and both cold and heat really bothered me. There may have been other symptoms but I can’t remember.

Doc wanted to prescribe medication. I wanted to try herbs. My feeling (which may be factual or not) was that if I took the medication, maybe my thyroid would just kick back and get even less functioning as something else was on the job.

I looked through my herb books and found this traditional Ayurvedic formula for thyroid, including goiter, which I did not have. Guggulu is a resin somewhat similar to myrrh, and is the basis for many powerful Ayurvedic remedies. I figured if the herb below helped with goiter it would help thyroid and it did. But two others seem more powerful I would recommend them.

Kanchanar Guggulu
This specifically clears accumulation of kapha (excess water/swelling) and toxins in the lymphatic and digestive systems. It contains herbs that helps strengthen metabolic functions and elimination. It is a key medicine in treating goiter, lymphatic and sinus congestion, fibroids, edema, hemorrhoids and benign tumors.

I did not find out about this one until more recently, I think it would likely help even more:

Kaishore Guggulu
This treats all kinds of inflammatory conditions to remove excess heat and accumulated toxins in muscles, blood, joints, and nerve tissues. It is used in inflammatory arthritis, bursitis, tendonitis, gout, and fibromyalgia. It helps to regular metabolic activity, and regulates thyroid activity, and treats other conditions as well.

Triphala Guggulu
This scrapes accumulated toxins and obstructions in bodily tissues and channels. It enkindles the digestive fire, supports metabolism, and helpful for obesity. It is used for many conditions including malabsorption, high cholesterol, hyperglycemia, and gallstone, fatigue, hypo-thyroidism, and more.

Within a few days of taking Kanchar Guggulu I felt energy returning, had an appetite (I was hungry, forgot what that was like) and gradually hair and nails strengthened. And that isn’t even the best one for thyroid. There may have been other benefits but it was around 20 years ago. I lost a little weight (would have liked a bit more).

I currently take all three of the above formulas, one or two at a time, for maintenance. Dosage is small, about 1/4 t. twice a day. They do come in capsules and tablets, I got in bulk powder.

I can find sources tomorrow if anyone would like. Guggulu formulas are among the most powerful of Ayurvedic medicines, and treat many difficult conditions, including incontinence, prostate problems, and more. Over the years my thyroid numbers have gotten better and they are now in the normal range.
