As we enter the GOP primary season, I'm starting to notice more and more an annoying trend here in FR. It seems as though everytime there's an article, or someone posts a comment about Romney, either pro or con, it nearly always devolves into an extended, and acrimonious discussion about the Mormon faith. Those who defend it, and those who, for whatever reasons, can't abide it, both sides seem determined to wage an "end of times" batte on all the FR threads. Frankly, I'm tired of it, and just wish it would stop. I think that probably 99% of others here feel the same way.
You make a great common sense, factual comment....And no one replies to you!
Have you ever heard the Mormon missionary spiel? I have, more than once.
They don't mention the star Kolob, or becoming gods, or the book of Abraham, or any of that science fiction stuff. (In fact they tap dance like Astaire when I bring up those topics...)
What they do is say, "Here. Read the Book of Mormon. Pray to God about it. Ask Him to put in your heart the knowledge of whether it is true or false."
And that spiel seems to work, a fair amount of the time.
So those Mormons know that the BoM is true.
And yet, standing to the side, it's easy for me to see that the whole thing is just flim-flam.
There are lots of different "knows" about the existence of God. Particularly in Protestantism, where no human authority is an intermediary between man and God.
Can a final Truth exist? Yes, of course. Does that Truth correspond to the doctrines of a particular faith? I'm simply in no position to say.
If you want to know how to deal with Mormons, all you need do is consider the example of Jesus confronting the Samaritan woman at the well. Did He trash her beliefs? Did he condemn her as a heretic? No, he treated her with the respect due to every human being, and thereby convinced her that He had the words of everlasting life.

Kid you need to reade the Christian Bible for yourself
the LORD Jesus Christ “disrespected” that woman up one side and down the other
When she went to preach to her town her first words were “Come and meet a man who told me every bad thing I ever did.”
Asw for her beliefs, she knew they were trash. She admitted it herself.
Why would he condemn her as a heretic ??? There is no mention of that. after all she was worshipping the same God as the Jews.
Letting a woman know that He knew she was a whore is hardly “treating her with respect”
Next you’ll be saying thaty Adam and Eve did a good thing for humanity when they disobeyed God in the Garden of Eden and got averyone condemned to be born in sin...
Maybe a “fall up” ????
They already have it. And will use it, if they think they have to.
You can't bring that on Freeper's who post to expose mormonism for what it is.......
Are you saying that if you are NOT a member then you are not a Christian?
and NCC indicates them to be another religion altogether.
I am still waiting for that link ...
Oh I wasn’t implying the MSM would get it from FR. I’m sure they know where to find out about the Church.
Live near a Mormon religious building and they’ll be knocking on your door once a month
No amount of NO hinders them
They think they sre entitled to proslytize and harass
The big sell for them is the info that the Morg takes in more money each year than any other “church”
so therefore God is in the mix...God is blessing them and nobody else
No amount of teaching them that God considers money filthy lucre and they can perish with it stops them
No, money is the proof that God lives in their religion
I used to enjoy my visits from the Mormon missionaries when I was younger, in one beach city I would drink beer while the two tried to convert me before I went out for the evening.
Speaking of that pair, the visits seemed warm and they became pretty open about some of the more weird stuff, I had a sincere curiosity about their cult and I did not debate, or want to debate them, I only wanted to learn about their cult, just as I used to do with the Krishnas, and the Children of God.
As time went by, I got the feeling that those two saw coming over to my place as a little vacation, a place where they could let their hair down and relax with someone not much older, and sometimes they would even show a little doubt about their religion. I got the real impression that I had a positive, eye opening effect on them and I sometimes wonder if they drifted away from that religion and hopefully to a Christian one.
That’s just twisted s*** you’re layin’ down.
Thank you for your observation. Perhaps they felt it was easier to play the victim card than face realities.
Indeed. Numerous. These days, I'm more conversational with them. Good exchanges.
They don't mention the star Kolob, or becoming gods, or the book of Abraham, or any of that science fiction stuff. (In fact they tap dance like Astaire when I bring up those topics...)
Yes, you have them pegged.
What they do is say, "Here. Read the Book of Mormon. Pray to God about it. Ask Him to put in your heart the knowledge of whether it is true or false." And that spiel seems to work, a fair amount of the time.
Yes, it appeals to feelings, one of the shameless gods of our age.
So those Mormons know that the BoM is true. And yet, standing to the side, it's easy for me to see that the whole thing is just flim-flam.
Again. Agreed.
There are lots of different "knows" about the existence of God. Particularly in Protestantism, where no human authority is an intermediary between man and God.
This is where we part. In case you missed it, we claim the Son of God, Jesus Christ, was and is also fully human.
So there's two claims ya gotta note if you're talking to Protestants on this:
* Jesus is our intermediary: "For there is one God and ONE MEDIATOR between God and mankind, the MAN Christ Jesus (Paul, 1 Timothy 2:5)
[Note: These Hebrew passages also pinpoint Jesus as the lone mediator of the New Covenant: see Hebrews 8:6; 9:15; 12:24]
* Jesus is our Living Revelation: 1 In the past God spoke to our ancestors through the prophets at many times and in various ways, 2 but in these last days he has spoken to us by his Son, whom he appointed heir of all things, and through whom also he made the universe. (Hebrews 1:1-2)
Jesus is that human mediator and direct point of contact between God and man -- to the point that He says post-resurrection, "All authority has been given unto me..." (Matthew 28:18).
There are lots of different "knows" about the existence of God.
This is true. James, Jesus' half-brother, said in James 2:19 that demons have a cognitive knowledge -- a cognitive assent -- about God's existence...and tremble!
To exemplify what you say, "truth" is indeed propositional. Yet Jesus chose to define Truth as Personal -- and we experience people: "I am the Way, the Truth, and the Life. No one comes to the Father but by Me." (John 14:6)
Can a final Truth exist? Yes, of course. Does that Truth correspond to the doctrines of a particular faith? I'm simply in no position to say.
And what I'm saying here is that first and foremost, Jesus Himself is that "final Truth"...surely when somebody announces to you that they are the Alpha and Omega -- the beginning and the end -- we know they are making quite a claim.
In that final chapter of Revelation (22), Jesus announces: 12 Look, I am coming soon! My reward is with me, and I will give to each person according to what they have done. 13 I am the Alpha and the Omega, the First and the Last, the Beginning and the End. 14 Blessed are those who wash their robes, that they may have the right to the tree of life and may go through the gates into the city. 15 Outside are the dogs, those who practice magic arts, the sexually immoral, the murderers, the idolaters and everyone who loves and practices falsehood. 16 I, Jesus, have sent my angel to give you this testimony for the churches. I am the Root and the Offspring of David, and the bright Morning Star. (Revelation 22:12-16)
As for being "in a position to say," Mormons rely upon a burning bosom. But we say the Holy Spirit isn't limited to heating up the bosom area [which, BTW, if you ask enough people, they'll tell you can be provoked by all manner of things...including that which isn't reputed to be "of the spirit."]
So how we do become "in a position to say?"
Jesus says we don't choose Him; He chooses us (John 15). Jesus said the Father draws people (John 6). Paul says the Holy Spirit leads us (from the inside-out) to confess Jesus as Lord (1 Corinthians 12:3).
There ya go. We don't receive credit or glory. 'Tis God manifesting HIMSELF -- not just feelings -- in and and through us.
We can continue to oppose His entry in and through our life; or we can lay down our resistance and defenses. A new life can germinate.
Men can’t get into heaven with out a spouse either.

Why do mormon guys have a spouse in the mormon afterlife ???
1 Beloved, believe not every spirit, but try the spirits whether they are of God: because many false prophets are gone out into the world.I have taken this test, I have applied it to the Book of Mormon, and I got an answer.
2 Hereby know ye the Spirit of God: Every spirit that confesseth that Jesus Christ is come in the flesh is of God:
3 And every spirit that confesseth not that Jesus Christ is come in the flesh is not of God: and this is that spirit of antichrist, whereof ye have heard that it should come; and even now already is it in the world.
Honey, God is a man.

Having some comprehension issues eh? Let me explain it again. As a liberal organization the WCC has a WIDE set of arms regarding the varieties of Christianity it (and its members) define AS Christian. Had you read the link closely - you would have noted that they included denominations that were NOT members of the WCC (hint hint). Notice those who were not listed - mormons, JW, christian science, etc - all who's fundamental doctrines are clearly opposite of even the very liberal core of the WCC.
I am still waiting for that link ...
Reading things can be hard, even with a link was provided. You will need to cut and paste this additional link -
http://www.ncccusa.org/members/
Take the time to read the list. Who is absent? And as my earlier link points out, they deal with mormons on a different basis.
Looky there
A swan song on the beast number
They aren’t as plain spoken as some groups are, such as Catholic Answers, but this seems to pretty say what Godzilla is claiming.
“Paragraph 3 deliberately avoids making statements about a number of controversial issues. It does not, for example, attempt a definition of what constitutes a “religion.” Some Buddhists, for example, would not consider Buddhism to be a “religion.” It is often difficult to determine exactly what constitutes a religious tradition and what does not. For the same reason, the document does not deal with the question of modern “cults” and what constitutes a “cult” and what should be recognized as a bona fide religion. It also does not deal with the borders of Christianity. It does not, for example, pronounce on whether or not Jehovahs Witnesses and Mormons are to be considered Christian. It is, however, interesting to note that the NCCC conducts its growing relationship with the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints as an interfaith relationship.”
Wait a minute you poor persecuted Mormon boy. Looks to me like you are baiting JR to zot you so you can bear testimony next week about these terrible apostates that have all lost their testimonies. Stop being such a lightweight for the cause. I used to like your approach but lately you are really getting that persecution complex in the way of reality.
Lighten up.
