As we enter the GOP primary season, I'm starting to notice more and more an annoying trend here in FR. It seems as though everytime there's an article, or someone posts a comment about Romney, either pro or con, it nearly always devolves into an extended, and acrimonious discussion about the Mormon faith. Those who defend it, and those who, for whatever reasons, can't abide it, both sides seem determined to wage an "end of times" batte on all the FR threads. Frankly, I'm tired of it, and just wish it would stop. I think that probably 99% of others here feel the same way.
I am in agreement with you.
I am not personally supporting Mr. Romney or Mr. Huntsman.
But, if one was a Roman Catholic and one was a Southern Baptists, the “News” forum and the political threads on it would not be consumed by Roman Catholics and Southern Baptists dragging their theological differences and debates into their opinions of the two candidates.
The same consideration DOES SEEM to NOT be given to “News” forum political threads when a person who is part of the subject of the thread is Mormon.
I too wish this would stop and saying this is not a “pro” Mormon position. It’s a “take your theological disputes to the Religion forum” position.
Does /did Romney mention that he is a practicing Mormon? Did he say or suggest that the faith is important to him, helps him, defines him?
If so then it’s 100% legitimate to discuss it. Maybe if he gets elected he will try to impose some of his views on all of us.
Personally I would love to never hear about mormonism ever again for the rest of my life, but Smith seems to possess them from the grave...
I agree with you somewhat. I don't care about the Mormon thing because Romney is carrying so much low hanging fruit to hit him on, but how are you going to keep this free of religion when Romney and maybe Huntsman are involved in Mormonism and they make no bones about it. It seem an appropriate discussion on some level. I do see your point on the threads that are just endless one note bashing though.
Is this correct?
I think that is little overstated.
Mormonism is considered by all main stream Christian belief systems to not be a part of Christianity.
Their own writings also substantiate that fact.
And in my experience, the mods deal with wacky posts from both sides of the argument fairly.
“It seems as though everytime there’s an article, or someone posts a comment about Romney, either pro or con”
Wait...there are pro-Romney articles posted here?
I agree with you, but am not holding my breath.
I have to agree with Ken.
There is available the Religion Forum. All discussions about religion should belong in the Religion Forum!
I come to Freerepublic to look for Conservative discussions including scientific comments, and politics. Even a few sane Democratic discussion
It I want to read Religion Discussions, I can always go to the Religion Forum. That is what it is for!
I disagree. If the candidate in question happens to be Mormon that is an important detail on how that person may govern. Hell the president we have now is muslim, and you see what is happening.
Go back and read my reply, which was to #3. The statement I was responding to wasn’t about the Mormons.
I wish it were true, but there are just as vocal and unhinged anti-Catholicism posters as there are anti-Mormonism, from what I have seen.
The bible thumpers invade the scientific threads as well.
is your agenda to pimp Romney?
Any candidate’s espousal of any false religious worldview, such as Mormonism, is a matter of concern and a legitimate topic for discussion.
I’ll rephrase. If someone would criticize Sarah Palin because they found her Evangelical views wacky and bizarre, I think that would be considered off-limits by mgmt...Mormons won’t get the same consideration. There was some thread the first of the year where I got that impression (Joseph Smith Apostle or something similar).
“I wish it were true, but there are just as vocal and unhinged anti-Catholicism posters as there are anti-Mormonism, from what I have seen.”
I see what you are talking about, when the topic is a religious pronouncement or news about something in religion or on the religion forum. I don’t see it when it is candidates and their policy positions - like I believe I do when a candidate is Mormon.
I guarantee that if Romney is the nominee, the MSM will start exposing the stuff about the Mormon Church that is regularly put out here on FR, and the Democrats will exploit it to the hilt.
I don't think John Kerry counts. ;)
I guess I mean on OUR side. The best parallel would be when discussing GOP possible nominees - would Catholicism bring up as much divisiveness as Mormonism?
I don't know. But I wouldn't assume, based upon past conduct, that it wouldn't be a major issue.
