Make my day, sir, shoot a hoodie Jeremy Clarkson Almost every day a politician comes onto the news and tells us all that Britain’s town centres are being overrun by teenage gangs who drink vast quantities of cider and then run about all night stabbing passers-by. While the event is videoed on mobile phones for the edification of YouTube viewers. It all sounds frightful, but frankly they could be talking about events on the moons of Jupiter because, happily, I live in Chipping Norton, where a lost kitten is front page news. Of course there are teenagers here, and some...

Banned: Police ordered to stop calling young tearaways 'yobs' By Ben Leapman, Home Affairs Correspondent (Filed: 01/10/2006) They are the menacing youths who hang about in gangs, causing trouble. For decades they have been known as "yobs". It has been rare for anybody to have a good word to say about them. But now, it seems, police officers are going to have to find a more "polite" way to describe the nation's troublemakers, because Scotland Yard has banned its officers from using the word "yob", for fear that it might alienate young people. The edict has the backing of Sir...

TWO miles from the centre of Liverpool lies a street where no sane family would choose to live. Among the 19 houses that make up Childers Street, a pack of young savages runs wild. Fearless, lawless and sowing misery with a careless abandon, their reign seems uncontested. They shout, fight, steal, drink, vandalise, bully, urinate, abuse, litter and deal drugs. When they are bored they throw a brick through your window. Or through the window of a police car. These feral teenagers from Europe’s future Capital of Culture are not, of course, unique. They have hooded cousins who roam the...
