Hi, here's another question from a technologically challenged, internet addicted, freeper. Let me begin by saying that my PC runs Windows 7 and I have Internet Explorer 9. However, a number of websites (yahoo, weather channel ...) keep showing statements about me having to update to IE9. Well, maybe it is not aimed at me, maybe they just have that announcement. But now I cannot read the comments in the Jerusalem Post and the reason, in their words, is "Sorry, the browser you are using is not currently supported. To use the comments, Disqus recommends the following browsers: Firefox,Chrome,Internet Explorer...

Microsoft has announced today that Windows 7 has reached a milestone of 600 million licenses sold. Just four months ago, in February, the figure stood at 525 million licenses. Windows 7 was released in October 2009 and is currently the operating system on nearly 40 per cent of internet connected devices according to Microsoft figures. Windows XP still accounts for approximately 45 per cent of global market share. Speaking at the Computex ICT show in Taipei, Microsoft’s Steve Guggenheimer updated us on Windows 7 sales figures while showing some new Windows 7 based devices. Most of the new Computex hardware...

Yes, I'm logged in. Tanned, rested, ready, cheese, moose, sister.... I'm trying to help a senior citizen on a fixed income, in my neighborhood, with a computer issue. He bought an HP desktop back when Win 7 first was issued (I think Nov. 2009) and all was well until about a month ago. Now, whenever he boots up the PC, a message pops up saying his copy of Win7 isn't genuine. He's called both HP and Microsoft and each company blames the other. Most of the time, his phone calls go to India and he has a hard time understanding...

Microsoft says that so far the Windows 8 Consumer Preview is twice as popular at this point than its predecessor Windows 7 was based on the number of downloads. The company didn't say how many downloads that is, but claimed it is used by millions of people per day. Meanwhile, the next prerelease version of Windows 8 will be available in about six weeks, inching closer to a final product that is still expected to launch this fall. Microsoft's Windows Chief Steven Sinofsky announced that the Windows 8 Release Preview version will be ready for download the first week of...

Last December I was asking y'all for help with my dying pc because I did not want to swith from Windows XP. Well, eventually I did have to get a new pc, it runs Windows 7 and, as many of you predicted, the transition was easier than I thought it would be. Actually I have only one problem with Windows 7. The computer does not "remember" account numbers, screen names...I would NEVER store passwords in my pc, but it is a pain to have to look account numbers every time I try to do on-line banking, pay a bill... I...

I received a new laptop for Christmas (Sony Vaio). I've done a couple of downloads - MalewareBytes, etc. When d/l completed, I see a quick flash - "virus scan OK" or something like that. Also, when d/l begins, I get a popup, indicating that it's safe. My question is: Do I have the MS Security Essentials already installed? I cannot find anywhere yea or nay. But, I may not be looking in the right place.

FR, I recently converted my computer to 32-bit Windows 7 from XP. When I installed my HP 3052 print/scanner/fax it was able to print but I lost the fax and scan capabilities. No, the driver for Windows Vista won't work. The HP 'Universal' driver just supports printing. I was wondering if anyone had the same problem and if there was some way to make this work like maybe with a substitute driver? Thank you for your help!

I need some help finding a 'gadget' for Windows 7 and Active Directory and I was hoping perhaps someone on FR could help. What I'm looking for is a simple gadget that shows selected Active Directory user account logons in real time. Meaning I'd be able to see at a glance a small table of users (up to ten maybe) who are logged on and, perhaps, for how long they've been logged on. Thank you for reading this and thanks for your help.

From the results of the Pwn2Own hacking competition, it looks like Android and Windows Phone 7 are tough nuts to crack. It took only two days for hackers to crack into the Apple and Blackberry operating systems during the three-day Pwn2Own tournament last week, while Android and Windows Phone 7 models were abandoned and left unhacked by the end of the contest. Is this because their operating systems are more secure? Yes and no. "The survival of a target does not automatically declare it safer than a target that went down," last year's Internet Explorer Pwn2Own winner Peter Vreugdenhil cautions....

Microsoft shipped the most important update yet to Windows 7 yesterday--or so you'd conclude from the Redmond, Wash., company's home-page promotion of this Service Pack 1 patch. Its name would suggest the same; Microsoft ranks Service Packs among its most comprehensive, sweeping fixes, issued only two or three times for an edition of Windows. Duly motivated, I set out to install Windows 7's "SP1" on a Dell notebook yesterday afternoon. Although the initial dialog in Windows Update suggested this download could run anywhere from 44 to 533.1 megabytes......

Microsoft today announced that it had wrapped up work on Windows 7 Service Pack 1 (SP1), and would start delivering the major upgrade on Feb. 22 through Windows Update. SNIP Microsoft has said several times that Windows 7 SP1 would not include any new features specific to the operating system, but would instead be composed of the security patches and nonsecurity fixes that had already been issued via Windows Update. The only additions to SP1 include an updated Remote Desktop client designed to work with RemoteFX, a new technology that debuts with Windows Server 2008 R2 SP1. RemoteFX is designed...

Analysts at Ovum have announced a number of predictions for the telecoms industry in 2011, with expectations that Windows 7 will become the fastest growing platform for smartphones, while the mobile landgrab in emerging markets will begin to slow down with emphasis shifting to broadband. It is thought that telecoms markets in the emerging markets of Africa, Asia, Eastern Europe and Latin America will see intensified competition that will lead to lower prices, slower growth and indeed lower margins. It is noted by Ovum analyst Angel Dobardziev that the “land grab phase” which occurred in the last decade will begin...

I'm trying to help a person install an HP All-In-One Printer/Scanner on their desktop, which is running Windows 7. The HP software worked just fine for his laptop, which is running XP (he can both print and scan using the machine which has XP). He said he downloaded all the necessary and applicable drivers (latest and greatest versions) from hp.com, and while the printer works, the scanner does not. When attempting to scan, the error is something along the lines of "Cannot communicate with scanner." Anyone have similar troubles and might be able to offer some words of wisdom? The...

An iCal alarm popped up for us today. It said: Mark Oct. 22 on your calendar. That's the day that Apple's classic 'I'm a Mac. I'm A PC' attack ads are going to cease to be humorous. Oct. 22 is, of course, the formal release date of Windows 7... Here's what I believe will happen: The Windows 7 launch will take those market-share gains Apple has seen over the past several years and make them disappear... Yes, the Mac has had a great run for the past couple of years. Gartner says Apple's share of the U.S. computer market for...

Even without the glamour of an iPad or another novel technology hit among consumers in its product lineup, Microsoft Corp. posted a 51% profit jump as two of the most venerable products in the technology business—Windows and Office—continued to thrive. The software giant's results suggest the standout growth of two of its biggest rivals, Google Inc. and Apple Inc., haven't yet begun to meaningfully hit Microsoft's cash cows. Yet the earnings still leave unanswered questions about whether Microsoft can reap financial success in fast-growing markets like mobile phones, tablet computers and Internet search. Apple, for one, recently showed how it...

Microsoft says it has sold 240 million Windows 7 licenses since releasing the operating system to retailers a year ago, making it the fastest-selling OS in the company's history. Also, as of September, the successor to the much-maligned Windows Vista was running on 93% of new consumer PCs, Microsoft said Thursday. According to Web metrics firm Net Applications, Windows 7 accounted for 17.1% of the global OS market as of the end of September and had surpassed Vista in July. In the six months after Windows 7 started appearing on store shelves, all of Microsoft's more than 18,000 computer-making partners...

Microsoft Chief Executive Steve Ballmer has promised a Microsoft Windows tablet computer to join the burgeoning market led by Apple’s new iPad. "You'll see new slates with Windows on them. You'll see them this Christmas," he told an audience of students, staff and journalists Tuesday at the London School of Economics. Microsoft has been heavily criticized for its inability to effectively penetrate the smartphone market as well as being slow to respond to the immediate success of the iPad -- despite record sales of Windows 7. IT research firm Gartner expects 10 million tablet PCs to be sold this year...

Everyone's excited about the forthcoming Windows Phone 7 software, which Microsoft bulls are hoping will mark Microsoft's return to relevance in the mobile industry. Reviews of the software have been good, and the only major complaint is that it's a year behind the rest of the industry--namely Apple's iPhone OS and Google's Android. In the rapidly evolving smartphone world, being a year behind is a recipe for trouble. If Microsoft focused huge resources on the problem, however, it might be able to close the gap. But Microsoft actually has a bigger problem in mobile, one that threatens to turn Windows...

Don't like the idea of Windows potentially being able to look at all my private info. Thoughts on a good email client that would work with Windows 7?

Last year at this time, Microsoft was in the final stages of preparing Windows 7 for its worldwide launch. The new OS was finally available to the public—well, at least that segment of the public with a TechNet or MSDN subscription. Those early adopters had to wait a few weeks after the official release to manufacturing date but still got a head start on the general public. Those demanding and skeptical Windows users have now had a full year to stress-test Windows 7 and decide whether it’s good enough to replace Windows XP. The verdict? Windows 7 has been a...
