Windows 10 was officially launched on July 29 and since then, Microsoft has released it for millions of users across the world who are eligible for the free upgrade to the new operating system. While Microsoft hasn't provided any new statistics on how well adoption of Windows 10 is going, there are new reports out there claiming that the operating system has already been installed more than 25 million times. Keep in mind that Microsoft hasn't yet confirmed these figures, but they are very likely to be accurate given the fact that after only 24 hours, Windows 10 was running...

Windows 10 is a potentially great upgrade – that’s not quite great yet.The new Microsoft operating system is an essential redesign. That alone makes it worth the upgrade, as I wrote last week. This week, however, I’m offering a reality check. After a week of constant use, I’ve found it to be buggy compared to Windows 8.1. While not surprising for a new operating system, the point is that some less-adventurous consumers may want to wait to upgrade. Windows 10 users have been documenting their challenges with the new Microsoft OS using the hashtag #Windows10Fail.I won’t go into the entire litany...

Microsoft's Windows 10's global usage share has quintupled since its July 29 launch, according to new data. Usage share, a measure of how active Windows 10 users have been on the Internet, stood at 3.2% at the end of Wednesday, data from analytics vendor StatCounter showed. That was a five-fold increase over the 0.6% logged by Windows 10 a week before, the first day Microsoft started serving the upgrade to members of its Insiders testing program. Wednesday's 3.2% was Windows 10's highest post-launch point so far, edging out the 3% milestone reached on Sunday, Aug. 2. In the following days,...

Are you a Windows 10 convert responsible for young computer users? Be on your guard. Child-friendly Family Features from Windows 7 and 8 won’t be recognised or accepted in the new operating system. Rather, children using Windows 10 PCs are seen as standard users; no dedicated child-user account exists. That means any existing age-related website controls, app and game restrictions, PC time limits, plus your ability to view recent activity, won’t work on Windows 10. Adults must now create a completely new set of family settings through a long-winded procedure in Windows 10 that requires the child’s participation. Microsoft had...

Here's a quick FYI: if you installed Windows 10, and in a rush to try out Microsoft's new operating system, you clicked through the default settings without looking, you may want to look again. ... There's a handy guide here to the settings you need to look out for during the install and afterwards.

Microsoft advises you to sweat it out MICROSOFT is warning customers that their free upgrade to Windows 10 may complete but not be activated for several days. A statement on the company website advises customers to "wait a few days and try again or just leave it and let it activate on its own. The activation servers might be overwhelmed." The advice is hollow succour for those who, perhaps less tech-savvy, want the reassurance of knowing that they definitely have a working Windows. Microsoft revealed just a day after the launch of Windows 10 that the OS has already been...

Microsoft is boasting that people installed Windows 10 over 14 million times in the new operating system's first 24 hours. It's a big number, but it doesn’t mean all that much. As PC sales slow, Microsoft’s sole goal for Windows is no longer selling software licenses. It also wants to pedal Internet services. So any discussion of Windows 10’s performance is incomplete if it only looks at user numbers. That’s especially true given that Microsoft is now giving away free Windows 10 upgrades to consumers running Windows 7 or higher, thereby abandoning the quick bucks that come from early...

Once again, Microsoft screwed the world with its Windows 10 feature called Wi-Fi Sense. This nasty feature has serious legal implications for it will automatically connect your personal Wi-Fi network to anyone in your e-mail list using HotMail, Skype, or Outlook, and even Facebook, making those friends questionable. If any such person comes within range of your home Wi-Fi, they could secretly access your system from hundreds of yards away. The real problem with this is rather sinister. The government would no longer need a search warrant for your surrendered privacy; good luck finding a judge who will uphold the...

HAVE YOU UPDATED TO WINDOWS 10 AND HAVE A DATA CAP ON YOU INTERNET PLAN THEN YOU MUST READ THIS Windows 10 is using yourbandwidth to offer updates to others Windows 10 uses an individual’s internet connection to share updates with others across the internet. Microsoft calls the feature Windows Update Delivery Optimisation and says it is designed to help users get updates faster. It is enabled by default in Windows 10 Home and Pro editions. Windows 10 Enterprise and Education have the feature enabled, but only for the local network. This is the same way that torrents work: A...

From the moment an account is created, Microsoft begins watching. The company saves customers' basic information - name, contact details, passwords, demographic data and credit card specifics - but it also digs a bit deeper... and finding answers is not easy, as one privacy expert exclaimed, "there is no world in which 45 pages of policy documents and opt-out settings split across 13 different Settings screens and an external website constitutes 'real transparency'."

It's been a few days since Microsoft Windows 10 launched and so far I'm loving it — and that's coming from someone who's been using a Macbook for the last 10 years. There's just one thing missing. Well, two, technically. I really miss my Apple and Google apps. There are lots of perks to buying into the Apple ecosystem. With a Mac and an iPhone, you get all kinds of computing superpowers. There's Handoff, an Apple feature which lets you shunt websites and draft emails from the phone to the desktop. There's Apple's Airdrop, which lets you send files (mostly...

There's a new Windows 10 upgrade email scam going around that has the ability to take over your computer if you fall for it.The scam, which was discovered by Cisco's security team, sends users an email that appears to come from Microsoft. It asks users to download a file to upgrade to Windows 10 for free. But if you install the file, it actually puts something called ransomware on your computer. The scam email looks like this:CiscoRansomware is a type of program that takes over your computer until you agree to pay the bad guy who made it. These bad guys...

When I first upgraded to Windows 7 back in 2009, I was shocked. Microsoft had somehow recovered from the mediocrity of Windows Vista and built an operating system that felt like the natural progression from Windows XP. It was clean, it ran better and most importantly, it didn’t try to fix what wasn’t broken. Then Windows 8 happened. I was smart/fortunate enough to avoid Windows 8 altogether, but as a fan of new technology, I couldn’t help but feel a little left out. I wanted the latest and greatest, and now, nearly three years later, it has arrived in the...

People aren't good at waiting for stuff, and with, computer users queueing up to download Windows 10, ransomware purveyors have started to move in. Cisco's security team has noticed a new spamming campaign attempting to spread the CTB-Locker ransomware using emails purporting to come from Microsoft, telling people they are ready to download Windows 10. The emails mimic the actual Windows 10 messages Redmond is sending out (with some minor text mistakes) and have spoofed the originating address to read as update@microsoft.com, although the sender's IP address can be traced back to Thailand. There's also a Microsoft disclaimer, and a...

Some 14 million people installed the Windows 10 operating system in the first 24 hours following its release, Microsoft said, calling the response "overwhelmingly positive." The company said its new operating system aimed at computers, mobile devices and other gadgets got off to a strong start toward its goal of reaching one billion devices. "We're humbled and grateful to see the response to Windows 10," corporate vice president Yusuf Mehdi said in a blog post late Thursday. "We have seen unprecedented demand for Windows 10, with reviews and customer feedback overwhelmingly positive around the globe." The stakes are high for...

OS X Yosemite vs Windows 10 It's been a rough few years for Microsoft.  Sure, it still makes more money than several European countries but the issue has been one of relevance. It missed the boat when it came to mobile and their efforts to repair the situation with Windows 8 were met with laughter at best, but sometimes even hatred. The all-new Windows 10, which was released on 29 July, is designed to stem the blood loss. We took a look at the latest preview (Microsoft took the wraps off the new operating system at a developer event in...

You don't have to wait for your win 10 "reservation", you can upgrade whenever you want by running this: http://www.microsoft.com/en-us/software-download/windows10 Choose "upgrade this computer". This requires the latest version of 8.1 (or 7). You won't need to input a key. The download is about 5 gigabytes. This will keep all your programs installed and keep all your personal files. (you can do a fresh install after the upgrade if you want) You can choose either express or custom install, I chose custom install and unchecked about 12 scary sounding privacy settings. Overall my experience was painless and successful. I did...

Microsoft Corp's launch of its first new operating system in almost three years, designed to work across laptops, desktop and smartphones, won mostly positive reviews for its user-friendly and feature-packed interface. The launch was seen critical for the company, particularly after the poor response to Windows 8, an ambitious redesign that confused many users by ditching the start button menu and introducing a new layout. The new OS, launched on Wednesday, will be available as a free upgrade for users of Windows 7, Windows 8.1 and Windows Phone 8.1. Wall Street Journal's Geoffrey Fowler said Windows 10 fixes most of...
