  • Wednesday’s White Sox-Orioles Game Moved To Afternoon, Will Be Closed To Public

    04/28/2015 12:12:03 PM PDT · by bryan999 · 43 replies
Amid civil unrest in Baltimore, Wednesday’s game between the White Sox and Orioles at Camden Yards has been moved to a 1:05 p.m. CT/2:05 p.m. ET start and will be closed to the public, the Orioles announced Tuesday. The game had been scheduled for Wednesday night. The change comes after Monday and Tuesday’s games between the teams were postponed due to safety concerns after rioting broke out near the stadium. The latest round of demonstrations follow the recent death of Freddie Gray, 25, an African-American suspect who had been taken into police custody.

n Monday and Tuesday, games between the Baltimore Orioles and Chicago White Sox at Camden Yards were cancelled due to safety concerns related to protests and civil unrest in Baltimore. Because of a lack of common off days among teams in the typical Major League Baseball schedule, additional cancellations would have been nearly impossible to make up, but the solution is still stunning: Wednesday's game will be played in front of an empty stadium. From an Orioles press release: After consultation with Major League Baseball and city and local officials, tomorrow's game between the Orioles and the Chicago White Sox...
  • Chicago baseball pioneer Minnie Minoso dies

The baseball world lost another legend on Sunday with the death of former Chicago White Sox outfielder Minnie Minoso. Minoso was a seven-time All-Star while playing with the White Sox in the 1950s and 1960s, but much more than that he was a pioneer. When he was traded by the Cleveland Indians to the White Sox in 1951, he became the city of Chicago’s first black player. There is some dispute over when Minoso was born, but the team website said he was 92. The Chicago Tribune reported that Minoso was found dead in his car at a Chicago gas...

Minnie Minoso, the hugely popular All-Star outfielder from Cuba who became the major league’s first black player out of Latin America and a treasured figure in the history of the Chicago White Sox, died on Sunday in Chicago. His true age was never entirely clear, but by an account in his autobiography, he would have been 89 when he died.

While we are still waiting on all the details to come in, the Red Sox are close to acquiring right-hander Jake Peavy from the Chicago White Sox. According to reports, Jose Iglesias (pitcured) will be sent to Detroit, and outfielder Avisail Garcia is going from Detroit to Chicago. Alex Speier of WEEI.com is reporting that 19-year-old Lowell infielder Cleuluis Rondon is one of three lower-level prospects who will be sent from Boston to Chicago to finalize the deal. We will have more information when this deal becomes final. UPDATE (12:02 AM): The Red Sox have announced the trade, including the...

If you're wondering what's going on in the American League Central pennant race over the next week, all you need to do is tune into a Chicago White Sox telecast and listen for the voice of the team's play-by-play man, Ken "Hawk" Harrelson. Harrelson is, to put it diplomatically, a bit of a "homer." In other words, he's unapologetic about his devotion to the White Sox, the team he routinely calls "the good guys." According to one measure, Harrelson and his booth partner, Steve Stone, make more nakedly biased statements during a single game than every other TV broadcast team...

BEGIN TRANSCRIPT RUSH: There's an Obama fundraiser event in Boston and taxpayers are having to cover security for that, or in Massachusetts somewhere. Obama went up there for his fundraiser in Boston, made some joke about the Red Sox trading Kevin Youkilis to the White Sox. He got booed in Boston, couldn't understand it. He's such a "man of the people." He had no idea how seriously Bostonians take the Red Sox. They weren't crazy about the trade. There's Obama, so-called White Sox fan, and they've seen Obama throw first pitches. They know they're looking at a freakin' girl throw...

White Sox tweet support for Obama after Boston boosBy Justin Sink - 06/26/12 03:19 PM ET President Barack Obama may have earned some friendly jeers when he thanked Boston Red Sox fans for shipping their World Champion third baseman to his hometown Chicago White Sox, but his team apparently has his back. The White Sox published a tweet from their official Twitter account Tuesday signaling they were on the same page with the president. We agree with you @BarackObama. We thank @RedSox for Youkilis too. — Chicago White Sox (@whitesox) June 26, 2012 Kevin Youkilis, a popular player on Boston's...

President Obama grabbed hold of the third rail of Boston politics and didn’t let go Monday night: He brought up the Red Sox. “Finally,” the president said, wrapping up his introductions at a fundraiser there, “I just want to say thank you for Youkilis.” That would be Kevin Youkilis, beloved slugger, who was traded this week to the Chicago White Sox, Obama’s hometown team. The crowd, members of which paid at least $144 a ticket to see the president at Symphony Hall, immediately booed playfully. “I’m just sayin’. He’s going to have to change the color of his socks,” Obama...

SEATTLE — White Sox right-hander Philip Humber made sure to relish every moment commemorating Saturday's perfect game with his teammates. That included spending Saturday night at a sports bar with about a dozen teammates to watch a UFC fight (even though Humber isn't a fight fan) to taping a "Top 10" segment for Monday's showing of "The Late Show with David Letterman.". "You only get one chance to re-live it," Humber said Sunday morning. Chicago Mayor Rahm Emanuel and former Sox ace Mark Buehrle were among more than 100 people who sent congratulatory messages to Humber. As of late Sunday...

Mayor Rahm Emanuel is dumping all three city members of the Illinois Sports Facilities Authority — including former Mayor Richard M. Ever since his Texas Rangers collapsed over the final two games of the World Series last week, Nolan Ryan says he hasn't watched the disappointing replay of David Freese's(notes) triple sailing over Nelson Cruz's(notes) head in the ninth inning of Game 6. He doesn't plan to, either. But while Ryan concedes he may accidentally see the replay while watching something else, everyone's favorite fireballer says he's going to make dang sure that another highlight won't be played when the Chicago White Sox come to opening day at Rangers Ballpark next April. That, of course, would be the clip of Ryan...

Woman alleges 'Sox' tattooed backward on thigh By: Todd J. Behme October 08, 2010 (Crain's) — A Chicago White Sox logo was tattooed backward onto a woman's thigh, she alleges in a lawsuit filed Thursday. Eugenia “Gina” Bebis of Elmwood Park went to Mystic Tattoo Art & Body Piercing in Chicago in early June for a tattoo made up mainly of the Sox logo, according to the suit. She consulted with an employee, Micah St. John, and he worked up a proof of the design, the suit says. Mr. St. John then inked the tattoo on the outside of her...

For awhile, Bob Shaw, who died of cancer 23 September at 77, was a pretty good righthanded pitcher, a sinkerballer with a companion biting slider, whose crowning season was 1959---he helped pitch the "Go-Go" White Sox to the American League pennant. The refugee Detroit Tiger became a mainstay on a pitching staff that included Hall of Famer in waiting Early Wynn and reliables Billy Pierce, Dick Donovan, and Gerry Staley, pitching for a team that included such grinding hustlers as two more future Hall of Famers, second baseman Nellie Fox and shortstop Luis Aparicio. Shaw led the 1959 American League...

The Washington Nationals baseball game Sunday afternoon was briefly interrupted during the bottom of the fifth inning when four people ran onto the field to protest Arizona’s immigration law. The reason there were protesters: the Nationals were playing the Arizona Diamondbacks. On the field, two protesters tried to unfurl some sort of protest sign but they couldn’t quite straighten it out before one of them was pancaked by a security guard, who received a standing ovation from the fans on the first-base line. All four were escorted off the field and their fates couldn’t immediately be learned.

Obama going off the deep end FLOYD AND MARY BETH BROWN, COMMENTARY April 9, 2010 A recent analysis by Roger Simon of PJTV Media maintains that Obama is showing signs of mental illness. A wide variety of commentators have observed that Obama displays severe narcissism. Obama is conceited, and he is demonstrating a serious disassociation from reality. A recent case in point was Obama's bizarre and meandering 17-minute, 2,500-word answer to the simple question about how he could justify raising taxes for ObamaCare during a recession when citizens are already overtaxed. Obama's wildly inappropriate answer left the audience stunned and...

Yet another jaw-dropper for a president whose stock-in-trade is manufacturing a false image. Yesterday, after botching the first-pitch at the Washington Nationals' home-opener, the president was asked a simple question: Who, while growing up, was your favorite Chicago White Sock? Obama, who lived and worked in the Sox' South Side ‘hood, might have named a number of players-Bill Melton. Richie Allen. or Moe Drabowsky. Instead, he whiffed. Seems the White Sox fan can't name a White Sock (and refers to the well known former Chicago landmark Comiskey part as "Cominsky" park). This is typical of Obama, who when not lecturing,...
