Widespread areas of Los Angeles experienced flooding and heavy rainfall on Sunday as a winter storm moved through the area, breaking a 97-year-old record for rainfall in one day. Though the day started clear and bright, with a golden sunrise illuminating the skies, raindrops began falling by midday — and by nightfall, the drizzle had become a deluge. The Los Angeles Times reported: Damage reports piled up late Sunday as a slow-moving storm system steadily pummeled Southern California, and downtown L.A. broke a 97-year-old rainfall record. In Studio City, a debris flow sent mud and other objects flowing down the...

A car drove off the end of the Virginia Beach pier and plunged into the sea, sparking a rescue effort by police. Around 6.50am Saturday, a car crashed through the barriers of the 14th Street pier and sped down the length of it. It braked briefly before driving through the wooden balustrade at the end of the pier and over the edge, as police say it is now 'at the bottom of the ocean.' A young woman standing on the beach caught the incident on camera when she heard a loud crash and started filming. Virginia Beach police are working...

ESA's Mars Express spacecraft has made a significant breakthrough in our understanding of Mars's hydrological history by uncovering extensive layers of water ice at the planet's equator. This finding, derived from new data analysis by the Mars Advanced Radar for Subsurface and Ionosphere Sounding (MARSIS), suggests the presence of ice layers stretching several kilometers below the surface in the Medusae Fossae Formation (MFF). Over a decade ago, initial studies by Mars Express pointed to the existence of massive deposits in the MFF, as deep as 2.5 kilometers. However, the composition of these deposits remained a mystery until now. "We've explored...

A new study has found that the overwhelming majority of protein foods such as meat and fish are contaminated with microplastics. The comprehensive study, conducted by researchers at the nonprofit Ocean Conservancy, found that approximately 88% of protein samples tested contained microplastic particles. "Highly processed products contained the most microplastics per gram," the study said in its findings.

Use land for food, not folly.Climate change activists increasingly target agriculture as a primary source of greenhouse gas emissions and pollution. Too often this translates into condemnation of gentle cows or the pleasures of meat-eating, instead of drawing attention to proper farming practices and land management. This is especially true with respect to water use and the ethanol industry.Water in AgricultureAmerican agriculture has continued to be dominated by ever-larger farms and producers, increasing productivity and economic growth and amplifying vital water resources’ drawdowns. This is apparent in water-precious regions such as Arizona and California, but also includes Idaho’s exploding dairy...

Who ever claimed Californians were full of crap? Officials in the Golden State this week approved new “toilet-to-tap” regulations, allowing water agencies to take wastewater from homes, recycle it and pump it back to households in an effort to boost the state’s dwindling water supply. “It will truly be the highest quality water delivered in the state when it’s done,” said Darrin Polhemus, director of the Division of Drinking Water ... the water will be more expensive than imported water, ... California has been using recycled water for decades on vegetable and fruit crops and for watering lawns, but this...

A year after pleading no contest to criminal charges, one of Pennsylvania’s leading natural gas companies is poised to drill and frack in the rural community where it was banned for a dozen years for polluting the water supply. Coterra Energy Inc. has won permission from state environmental regulators to drill 11 gas wells underneath Dimock Township, in the state’s northeastern corner - the sweet spot of the largest natural gas field in the United States, according to well permit records reviewed by The Associated Press. Billions of dollars worth of natural gas, now locked in shale rock deep underground,...

California’s plan to recycle sewage into drinking water is a risky decision, raising concerns about public health and safety. Introducing treated wastewater into the same pipes that deliver drinking water lacks thorough consideration of potential contamination and long-term consequences, especially given the state’s history of extreme droughts. While there’s a noted shift in public opinion, the approval of such a plan doesn’t guarantee its wisdom. Past backlash against similar projects suggests initial skepticism was justified, and California’s recurrent droughts call for a more cautious approach to water management.

The California State Water Resources Control Board (SWRCB) will consider regulations next week that would allow “toilet to tap” reuse of water supplies, treating sewage water and sending it back into ordinary drinking water systems in select municipalities. As Breitbart News noted back in 2019, new technology, similar to that used for desalination, was being tested on sewage water with a view to recycling that water, expanding the supply of available water in a state that is beset by periodic severe droughts.

Water Heater Saving Project. I've moved into a new home in a retirement community and don't want big bills to replace my Water Heater down the line. I also don't like the idea that my energy bills may go up significantly with the global climate change policies that many are embracing. What can I do? Powered Anode (With LED) - $99 Amazon. $10 - Water Pressure gauge Home Depot. $5 Meat Temperature gauge. Plumber $89. First: High Water Pressure and High water Temperatures kill Water Heaters prematurely (as low as 5 years). Over 80 PSI or over $180, I consider...

Israel has designated a safe zone in southern Gaza, but its widening air and ground offensive has left Palestinians packed together in dire humanitarian conditions. United Nations monitors said Thursday that a hospital in the southern town of Khan Younis received its first delivery of supplies since Nov. 29. Aid groups are severely limited by fighting and restrictions placed by the military. The United Nations estimates 1.9 million people have been displaced and new military evacuation orders are squeezing people into ever-smaller areas. Most lack food, water and medicine. Around 1,200 people have died on the Israeli side, mainly civilians...

Four Northwest Republican lawmakers asked the federal government to share details of “secretive negotiations” between the government and environmental groups that have called for the removal of dams on the Columbia and Snake rivers. In a Nov. 20 letter to Brenda Mallory, chairwoman of the Council on Environmental Quality, the lawmakers reminded the White House that Congress has the authority to weigh in on President Joe Biden’s potential removal of dams in the Columbia River Basin to rebuild salmon runs. “In addition to expecting the immediate transmittal of the proposed USG commitments, we find it necessary to remind you Congress...

The Biden administration took action Wednesday for a historic agreement among Western states to conserve vital water supplies. The Department of the Interior (DOI), which has for months worked with state leaders on developing water conservation plans, issued a draft supplemental environmental impact statement (SEIS) laying out two potential options: a no-action alternative and the proposed action to substantially restrict supplies in coming years. The proposal is designed to protect the Colorado River System and two key dams in response to falling water levels. "Today, the Biden-Harris administration is taking another key action to bolster water resilience in the Basin...

Hamas leader Yahya Sinwar warned Israel that "if the Strip is dragged into war, Israel will suffer. It won't evacuate just the towns bordering Gaza, but also Ashdod, Ashkelon, and even Tel Aviv." "Our fingers are still on the trigger, and they'll stay there in order to protect the Palestinian nation. Hamas will be a sword and shield for the Palestinian people." On Wednesday, the Palestinian Authority's Al-Quds newspaper reported that the various local factions - headed by Hamas and Islamic Jihad - ordered their members to cease using explosives along Gaza's border with Israel. The report also claimed that...

The European Union (EU) spent $100 million of taxpayer funds on building over 30 miles of water pipelines for Palestinians in Gaza, despite Hamas having bragged about their ability to turn the piping materials into makeshift rockets online. The EU participated in a number of initiatives between 2015 and 2022 to ensure Palestinians have fresh water, including working alongside UNICEF to install an 11-mile pipeline to Khan Yunus and Raha in southern Gaza. Footage emerged, in 2021, of Hamas fighters digging up the pipes and fashioning them into rockets to launch over the border into Israel. Despite this, the EU...
