Widespread areas of Los Angeles experienced flooding and heavy rainfall on Sunday as a winter storm moved through the area, breaking a 97-year-old record for rainfall in one day.
Though the day started clear and bright, with a golden sunrise illuminating the skies, raindrops began falling by midday — and by nightfall, the drizzle had become a deluge.
The Los Angeles Times reported:
Damage reports piled up late Sunday as a slow-moving storm system steadily pummeled Southern California, and downtown L.A. broke a 97-year-old rainfall record.
In Studio City, a debris flow sent mud and other objects flowing down the 11900 block of Lockridge Road, damaging at least two homes, Los Angeles firefighters said. All nine homes on Lockridge Road were evacuated, including pets, “in case further soil instability causes another flow,” firefighters said. There were no injuries. Sixteen residents were displaced.

On Sunday, downtown L.A. had seen 4.1 inches of rain, which broke the record for the calendar day set on Feb. 4, 1927, when 2.55 inches of rain was recorded. Sunday was the third wettest February day on record and tied for the 10th wettest day for any time of year since recordkeeping began in 1877, the National Weather Service said. (The wettest day ever was March 2, 1938, which brought 5.88 inches of rain.)

This is what happens when you insist on building a city on desert, sandy soil, once in a while it rains and s6it happens. So sorry.
Flush that toilet.
They finally got it right with all the cloud seeding. Now they overdid it.
Yep.....needs a good douching now and then.
But it pours, man it pours.
Im just glad they didnt call it the biggest rainfall in 15,000 years.
I thought they were just crying about climate change, and being in a drought not long ago?
They should be happy with all the water, no?
“ Flush that toilet.”
I hope not too many homeless who live in the LA River get washed out to sea.
The morons here are all convinced it’s “extreme weather” when just a few years ago they were insisting that it would never rain again.
This is our second year with record rain/snow - last year was the most snow in 80 years - and instead of admitting they were completely wrong, they just shift gears and start screeching.
Yep, ship in 50 tons of Dawn dish soap and Tide and clean out the filth. Mother nature is bringing water, now bring the Soap!!!!
Too bad they keep taking out those dams so they could have stored most of that water for this summer/fall.
so much for global warming :)
And now all of the human poop and drug needles have been washed into the Pacific Ocean!!!!!
Did this amount of rainfall exceed their storm drain capacity...?
Have they let their infrastructure go to heck...?
Both...?
Well, some in California have been complaining non-stop about the drought. SO God does hear their prayers.
And there will be articles in their newspapers talking about the great job the city managers are doing of keeping the streets clean.
Wonder if the state will begin screaming about mud slides due to climate change. Mud slides were so common in the 1960s that the movie How to Commit Marriage(1969) ended with Jackie Gleason and Bob Hope up to their necks in mud!
Wow! I can still remember back that far! I bet the news media is wishing all us oldsters would die off and not remind people about THE COMING ICE AGE scare which was all the rage back then.
LA was due for a good flush.
