The faculty of Washington & Lee University are uncomfortable with the name and are recommending it be changed "to better conform with contemporary sensitivities." George Washington was an early benefactor and Robert E. Lee was a former president of the university. The three permanent Black faculty members at the university's law school want both names removed. Brandon Hasbrouck, an alumnus and associate professor of law suggested a compromise that would remove only Lee's name. As for what the new name should be, opinions are divided. History Professor Zinn Howard wants the school to be rechristened Marx & Lenin University "to...

The faculty of Washington & Lee University in Lexington, Virginia, voted on Monday to remove the name of Robert E. Lee from the university’s name. During a faculty meeting on Monday, 79 percent of faculty voted in favor of a change to the university’s name. According to a report by the Richmond Times-Dispatch, the faculty at Washington & Lee University voted on Monday to remove “Lee” from the university’s name. Zoila Ponce de Leon, an assistant professor at the university, argued that the name change would be a small step towards making students from “diverse backgrounds” more “comfortable” on campus....

Walter Wilmore is a member of the Stonewall Brigade of the Sons of Confederate Veterans. Last month, he applied to hold a ceremony on Lee-Jackson Day here at the Lee Chapel at Washington and Lee University. A few weeks later, he received a notice in the mail rejecting the organization's request to use the chapel. Wilmore says the group has been holding the ceremony there for 14 years and he's shocked the request was denied.

This should terrify any parent whose son is about to head off to college or is presently matriculating anywhere in the Ivory Towers of academia. The fundamental lack of due process and oppressive tactics used by university administrators at Washington & Lee University (W&L) should lead any family to keep their sons from applying to the university. Male students at Washington & Lee risk serious consequences if they engage in an entirely consensual sexual relationship with a female student who later is convinced to “regret” what she did, or who becomes jealous if the male student starts a relationship with...

One of the most startling aspects of life in our nation’s capital is the degree to which Republican lawmakers bend over backwards to secure funding for institutions of higher learning where professors construct programs designed as headlong assaults on both the free enterprise system and America’s national defenses, whatever the facts may be. Case in point: Washington & Lee University’s Poverty Studies program. “The program has attracted diverse supporters, including Sen. John Warner (R-Va.), a W & L alum,” Brigid Schulte reported in The Washington Post. “He has secured grants for the program and included a provision in the Higher...

Esther Clark of Brenau University, Eric Shive of Cornell and Travis Barham of Washington & Lee spoke of their exploits as conservative student leaders on campus at the recent Eagle Forum Collegians (EFC) Annual Leadership Summit. Coming into Brenau, a private women’s liberal arts college in Georgia, Clark focused on her career aspirations. She threw the idea of children and being a mother to the side, almost scoffing at her mother who had given up her career to take care of the children. But then she realized through reflection, a career didn’t matter to her. Seeing her classmates and people...
