Does anyone have any ideas what can be done with old 78 rpm records? It seems such a shame to throw them out as some are in pretty good shape. I just cannot keep them anymore.

I need some advice. I have a rather large collection of vinyl records that I plan to record to an external computer hard drive. The record player that I have uses i-tunes to process each cut onto the computer. Does anyone on here have any experience with this that could maybe recommend a different/better idea to handle saving everything on to the hard drive. I am looking for flexibility in moving the finished product between computers. This is going to be a pretty long-term project, what with cigar and bourbon breaks, and I want to get it as near right...

In 2014 you'd be forgiven for thinking the music industry is all about online charts and digital downloads, but the latest figures released by the Official Charts Company reveal a corresponding boom in vinyl record sales which have reached an 18-year high. More than one million records have been sold in the UK so far this year – a number which is expected to rise even further by the end of Christmas. We haven't bought that many since 1996, back when cassette tapes were still considered technologically advanced... Sales have been driven primarily by the Arctic Monkeys (whose LP AM...

Paul Mawhinney, a former music-store owner in Pittsburgh, spent more than 40 years amassing a collection of some three million LPs and 45s, many of them bargain-bin rejects that had been thoroughly forgotten. The world’s indifference, he believed, made even the most neglected records precious: music that hadn’t been transferred to digital files would vanish forever unless someone bought his collection and preserved it. Mawhinney spent about two decades trying to find someone who agreed. He struck a deal for $28.5 million in the late 1990s with the Internet retailer CDNow, he says, but the sale of his collection fell...

EINDHOVEN, Netherlands - It was Aug. 17, 1982, and row upon row of palm-sized plates with a rainbow sheen began rolling off an assembly line near Hanover, Germany. ADVERTISEMENT An engineering marvel at the time, today they are instantly recognizable as Compact Discs, a product that turns 25 years old on Friday — and whose future is increasingly in doubt in an age of iPods and digital downloads. The recording industry thrived in the 1990s as music fans replaced their aging cassettes and vinyl LPs with compact discs, eventually making CDs the most popular album format. The CD still accounts...
  • Groovy Pictures: Extracting sound from images of old audio recordings (preserving old recordings)

Week of May 29, 2004; Vol. 165, No. 22 , p. 339 Groovy Pictures: Extracting sound from images of old audio recordings Peter Weiss Songs and words preserved on antique vinyl records and wax cylinders become more precious with each passing day. They also grow increasingly fragile and are especially vulnerable to damage if played. Now, researchers using optical-scanning equipment have made exquisitely detailed maps of the grooves of such recordings. By simulating how a stylus moves along those contours, the team has reproduced the encoded sounds with high fidelity. Libraries with collections of old recordings "don't want to queue...
