USC athletic director Mike Bohn announced Monday that Clay Helton is out as head coach of the Trojans. Cornerbacks coach Donte Williams will serve as interim head coach for the remainder of the season. When C.L. Max Nikias was ousted as president of USC amid a sex abuse scandal involving a onetime campus gynecologist, the university’s trustees sent him off with a compensation package that exceeded $7.6 million, according to newly released tax filings. The filings, made public by the university this week, cover the 2019 fiscal year, a period during which Nikias served just 38 days as president. USC’s board defended the payout in a statement, saying it was necessary to abide by the terms of Nikias’ contract and “in order to move forward with a leadership change.”

University of South Carolina alumni are circulating a petition to rename two buildings on campus whose namesakes were tied to segregation or slavery. The two online petitions, calling for the Strom Thurmond Wellness and Fitness Center and Sims at Women’s Quad, a dormitory for female students, to be renamed, have each received more than 2,000 signatures, according to the petitions. A new study unveiled Monday from the University of Southern California (USC) with the Los Angeles County Department of Public Health discovered infections of the novel Wuhan coronavirus to be far more widespread with a lower fatality rate than initially thought. The California researchers conducted rapid antibody testing of a representative sample of adults and found that approximately 2.8 to 5.6 percent of L.A. County’s adult population already had coronavirus antibodies present, translating to 221,000 to 442,000 past-infected people. The new estimate dwarfs the nearly 8,000 cases that had been reported at the time the study took place April 10-11....

USC will eliminate tuition for families earning $80,000 or less annually, part of an effort to increase access for middle and low-income students, the school announced Thursday.
