How Ed Orgeron persevered through all the jokes, firings and failure to win it all at LSU

Six football seasons ago, Ed Orgeron was out of work, spending his Friday nights sitting in the stands of Mandeville High School (Louisiana) watching his son Parker play. On Saturday afternoons he’d turn on the television.

“Sitting on the sofa at my house,” Orgeron said. “I remember watching SEC games, going, ‘I know I can compete with these guys given the right place.’ ”

He’d once been head coach at Ole Miss, but he won just three SEC games in three seasons. He’d essentially been retired into Southern football lore as a colorful character who couldn’t coach a lick. He’d clawed his way back to become interim coach at USC, but even after going 6-2, the Trojans deemed the barrel-chested, thick-accented, proud-of-his-Cajun-roots coach a bad fit for Los Angeles.

You can laugh at USC, which hasn’t won much since, but in the fall of 2014, it wasn’t like Orgeron’s phone was buzzing with anyone who saw him as head-coaching material.

Clemson delivered some punches early on especially with their 3-1-7 defense. But once LSU made the adjustments game over. Something was off with Sunshine as he overthrew a lot of passes.

Watching the game I have decided that all pass interference penalties should be reviewed.

Clemson fan here. Coach Ed and Burrows are a great story. Congrats to them. Pretty interesting game until about mid way third quarter.

Coach Ed is from Lafourche Parish.

It should be known that any person from south Louisiana and southwest Louisiana LOVES football!

And I don’t mean NFL either, I mean college and high school in particular.

These guys know their sh!t, and they can play.

That offensive pass interference call against Clemson was insane. Horrible call.

Ed Orgeron SHOULD have been coaching USC to glory again. But he ended up at another powerhouse: LSU.

Sometimes the stars just align; where would LSU be without Joe Burrow? Getting him had to be somewhat of a gamble, but now he's better than most NFL qbs. Orgeron was also very creative and intelligent to reach out and get Joe Brady from the Saints to develop their passing game. Most coaches wouldn't even think of that and wouldn't do it for fear they would be hiring their replacement.

If the Bengals do draft Burrow, they would be smart to get Brady to continue to develop him.

LSU fan here. I was incredibly nervous and down right scared several times.

Clemson came to play.

I think my lowest point may have been the successful two point conversion.

That was a good championship game, a nail biter for me up until about that mid 3 rd.

Well played, Clemson.

The thing of it is, none of them can do it by themselves.

It really is a matter of stars aligning, and it sure is a beautiful thing to see.

I don’t watch a lot of college football, but to me, it seems Burrow will be a big star in the NFL. He’s accurate and can run, but above all, he seems to be “Tom Brady” smart in terms of looking at defenses and knowing where the high-percentage plays are.

Clemson ran out of gas early and Lawrence was definitely off. Burrow made necessary adjustments and showed us why he has the potential to be a NFL star. I have one complaint in watching the game. Why is it a personal foul to blindside block someone running and not a foul to excessively hit an unprotected receiver while he is in the air? That hit was vicious, deliberate, and uncalled for as the ball had already sailed far over his head. Watching the replay and movement of the receiver’s head I was surprised that he was able to get up. If they’re going to call targeting for far less and frequently accidental contact, why not call a foul for dangerous and deliberate hits like this?

It wasn’t that Clemson ran out of gas. It was that LSU was that good. 500 yards of total offense that the beginning of the 4th quarter. Against the defending champs that had won a million games in a row. Just unreal.

Yep Trevor did miss a lot of throws C19. Credit some to LSU pressure but other times, no pressure, he was just off. Bad time to have an off day.
Refs didn’t help Clemson any with some questionable calls but overall LSU was the better team for 3 qtrs of the game. Could have been worse too. LSU was knockin on the door and took a knee. As they should have. But cannot argue LSU was flat out better with about 625 of total offense, most of which came the last 2 and a half quarters of the game.
Final score was not indicative of how good a game that was. Very entertaining until the 4th. Congrats to LSU.

Not a given yet.

I am sure owners and coaches are trying to figure out if it is worth it to give up a lot to get Burrow who is older than Lamar Jackson

For starters, they will want to know how badly he was injured last night. There is no doubt he was injured. He played through it. But they were careful around him during the celebrations.

Watching the game, I don't know what 'pass interference' is anymore.

Longhorn here, so I don’t have a team since all we play now are intramurals.

But, it was a good championship. Kudos for Clemson’s great year and hard fought game. LSU was deserving and the best team in college this year. (They should have won even without getting 90% of all crucial controversial calls against OU and Clemson.)

If anything that should increase his value because it shows he's tough. I'd be a lot more concerned about Tua's durability.
