The largest land mammals that ever lived, Indricotherium and Deinotherium, would have towered over the living African elephant. The tallest on diagram, Indricotherium, an extinct rhino relative, lived during the Eocene to the Oligocene Epoch (37 to 23 million years ago) and reached a mass of 15,000 kg, while Deinotherium (an extinct proboscidean, related to modern elephants) was around from the late-Miocene until the early Pleistocene (8.5 to 2.7 million years ago) and weighed as much as 17,000 Courtesy of Alison Boyer/Yale University Researchers demonstrate that the extinction of dinosaurs 65 million years ago made way for mammals to get...

For decades, scientists have estimated that the Siberian unicorn - a long-extinct species of mammal that looked more like a rhino than a horse - died out some 350,000 years ago, but a beautifully preserved skull found in Kazakhstan has completely overturned that assumption. Turns out, these incredible creatures were still around as recently as 29,000 years ago. Before we talk about the latest discovery, yes, there was a very real 'unicorn' that roamed Earth tens of thousands of years ago, but it was nothing like the one found in your favourite children’s book. (Sorry - it’s a bummer for...

Tatum Boos, 5, gave Juliette a "timeout" after the horse was returned to its Central California stableDrivers in the Central California town of Madera got quite a surprise Wednesday night as a unicorn darted through traffic. Well, not really a unicorn, but a white pony dressed up like one for a child's birthday party. The pony bolted away from one of the party-goers around 5:30 p.m. and was reported by several drivers on different highways, according to California Highway Patrol. "The calls were coming in as a unicorn running around," said CHP Officer Josh McConnell. It was the second...

There is no greater political miscalculation, or fraud, than the notion that Republicans have to “moderate” their positions on immigration reform in order to appeal to Hispanic voters. This fiction began with President George W. Bush’s aborted attempt at comprehensive immigration reform in early 2007.

Actually, it was for Cellulosic Ethanol, but those Projections are Equally Unrealistic WASHINGTON — American Energy Alliance President Thomas Pyle issued the following statement on EPA’s proposed volume requirements for the 2014, 2015, and 2016 Renewable Fuel Standard: “Once again, EPA has deluded itself into thinking it can simply mandate the commercial cellulosic biofuel industry out of thin air. EPA’s unrealistic projections for cellulosic biofuel underscore the incompetence of federal bureaucrats and the arrogance of Washington politicians who think they know what’s best for the economy and the American people. “The RFS has been broken from the beginning. It distorts...

This is the ObamaCare “Pajama Boy:” This “pajama boy” has been revealed to be a young man by the name of Ethan Krupp, a male model, Miley Cyrus fan, and Organizing for America member... Krupp also quickly deleted his twitter account. Unfortunately for him, favstar, a website that tracks tweets, still retains several of his asinine musings. That includes this one about Occupy Wall Street: His friend Max Fries detailed on instagram a “jam sesh” he and Pajama Boy had covering Miley Cyrus songs:

Explanation: Strange shapes and textures can be found in neighborhood of the Cone Nebula. The unusual shapes originate from fine interstellar dust reacting in complex ways with the energetic light and hot gas being expelled by the young stars. The brightest star on the right of the above picture is S Mon, while the region just below it has been nicknamed the Fox Fur Nebula for its color and structure. The blue glow directly surrounding S Mon results from reflection, where neighboring dust reflects light from the bright star. The red glow that encompasses the whole region results not only...

Explanation: In this beautiful celestial still life composed with a cosmic brush, dusty nebula NGC 2170 shines at the upper left. Reflecting the light of nearby hot stars, NGC 2170 is joined by other bluish reflection nebulae, a compact red emission region, and streamers of obscuring dust against a backdrop of stars. Like the common household items still life painters often choose for their subjects, the clouds of gas, dust, and hot stars pictured here are also commonly found in this setting - a massive, star-forming molecular cloud in the constellation of the Unicorn (Monoceros). The giant molecular cloud, Mon...

The original unicorn was actually an ancient rhinoceros according to research conducted by Dr. Tao Deng from the Institute of Vertebrate Paleontology and Paleoanthropology at the Chinese Academy of Sciences that was presented in the June 21, 2013, issue of the Chinese Science Bulletin. The fossils of the first ever discovered skull of Sinotherium lagrelii were found in the Linxia Basin in northwestern China and date to the Late Miocene about seven million years ago.

Explanation: How was the unusual Red Rectangle nebula created? At the nebula's center is an aging binary star system that surely powers the nebula but does not, as yet, explain its colors. The unusual shape of the Red Rectangle is likely due to a thick dust torus which pinches the otherwise spherical outflow into tip-touching cone shapes. Because we view the torus edge-on, the boundary edges of the cone shapes seem to form an X. The distinct rungs suggest the outflow occurs in fits and starts. The unusual colors of the nebula are less well understood, however, and speculation holds...

Pyongyang, November 29 (KCNA) -- Archaeologists of the History Institute of the DPRK Academy of Social Sciences have recently reconfirmed a lair of the unicorn rode by King Tongmyong, founder of the Koguryo Kingdom (B.C. 277-A.D. 668). The lair is located 200 meters from the Yongmyong Temple in Moran Hill in Pyongyang City. A rectangular rock carved with words "Unicorn Lair" stands in front of the lair. The carved words are believed to date back to the period of Koryo Kingdom (918-1392). Jo Hui Sung, director of the Institute, told KCNA: "Korea's history books deal with the unicorn, considered to...

White House officials working furiously on new negotiation plan, 'New York Times' reports; Clinton calls for immediate resumption of talks. US President Barack Obama's advisers are working to draft a fresh potential Israeli-Palestinian peace proposal, The New York Times reported Wednesday. The conceivable proposal will address the four major sticking points which have repeatedly foiled negotiations in the past three decades, the Times said. Those include the right of the return for Palestinian refugees, a desire which Obama will likely declare untenable, as well as the bifurcation of Jerusalem. Obama's plan was tipped to call for the division of Jerusalem,...

GOP launches mock 'Obama 2012' adBy Michael O'Brien - 04/01/11 07:41 AM ET The ad, which features Obama riding a unicorn over a rainbow, declares: "Four more years: America needs more changing." Republicans are taking aim at President Obama's impending reelection effort with a mock campaign ad outlining his first two years in office. The National Republican Senatorial Committee (NRSC) posted a fake "Obama 2012" ad, ribbing the president for divisiveness, his energy policy, budget deficits and engaging in the occasional extracurricular activity, such as golfing or filling out NCAA brackets on television. "Four more years: America needs more changing,"...

Ancient “Monster” Insect Found Fly in amber: This ancient "unicorn" fly that lived 100 million years ago in Burma has a "horn" in the center of its forehead, capped with three small eyes. Courtesy of George Poinar Researchers have announced the discovery of a new, real-world “monster” — what they are calling a “unicorn” fly — that lived about 100 million years ago and is being described as a new family, genus and species of fly never before observed. A single, incredibly well-preserved specimen of the tiny but scary-looking fly was preserved for eternity in Burmese amber. It had...
