Tornadoes are becoming more frequent in populated parts of the United States and are often occurring as damaging clusters — a development seen in recent deadly outbreaks from Alabama to Michigan. The number, damage and deadliness of individual tornadoes has held roughly steady over the past 50 years, federal experts with the National Oceanographic and Atmospheric Administration told The Hill. But broad shifts in the patterns of how tornadoes occur will pose serious challenges to policymakers and emergency managers across the South and Midwest — even as risks remain in the traditional heart of Tornado Alley.

An early morning tornado has caused deaths, injuries and widespread damage in Bollinger County. According to the Missouri State Highway Patrol (MSHP), there are multiple fatalities and injuries after a tornado touched down just before 4 a.m. on Wednesday, April 5. At this time, the number of deaths and injuries is not known. MSHP said the tornado touched down in the area of Highway 34 near Grassy to the north of Marble Hill on Highway 51. There is a large debris field. Damage appears to be extensive.

CHICAGO - The roof of the Apollo Theatre in Belvidere, Illinois collapsed Friday night as severe weather swept through the Chicago area, killing one person and injuring dozens of others. Severe storms in the South that killed at least 21 people in Mississippi and Alabama highlight the dangers of being inside a mobile home or manufactured home during severe weather. Many of the dozens of homes destroyed in the storms were manufactured. In the hardest-hit community of Rolling Fork, Mississippi, 24% of housing units in the county are manufactured homes according to the Census Bureau. A tiger is apparently loose in Troup County, Georgia, on Sunday morning after a tornado tore through the area, authorities said. The Pine Mountain Animal Safari reported that a tiger at the park was unaccounted for, the Troup County Sheriff's Office said. It was unclear how the tiger escaped. The park posted on Facebook that it will be closed on Sunday.

At least 23 people died overnight after a tornado ripped through central Mississippi, destroying homes and leaving at least one town in ruins. Officials said dozens more were injured and at least four people are still missing after what was likely multiple tornadoes tore through the region in the dead of night, according to the Mississippi Department of Emergency Management. Following a tornado that plowed across the Arabi area of St. Bernard Parish Tuesday night, parish officials said there were mutltiple injuries and several reports of people trapped in their homes. "We have reports of people that are trapped," St. Bernard Parish Sheriff Jimmy Pohlmann said. "We're in the area doing assessments now." Parish President Guy McGinnis said there were reports of people trapped inside bathrooms in their homes. The tornado struck Arabi, in a south to north direction, McGinnis said.
