Woman whose son was killed in tornado criticizes Amazon

EDWARDSVILLE, Ill. (AP) — The mother of a man who was killed in December when a tornado slammed into an Amazon facility in Illinois said on Tuesday that her son was only in the building because he was called into work on his day off.

“It breaks my heart that DeAndre was scheduled to take his day off but was called from dispatch to work an extra shift,” said Deon January, the mother of DeAndre Morrow.

January, whose son was one of six people killed Dec. 10 when the tornado obliterated nearly half of the sprawling facility in the southwestern Illinois community of Edwardsville, appeared with attorney Ben Crump, who has filed a wrongful death lawsuit on her behalf.

“We believe (the tragedy) was completely preventable if Amazon lived up to its words,” said Crump, a prominent civil rights and personal injury attorney whose clients have included the families of George Floyd and, more recently, the family of Patrick Lyoya, who was fatally shot last month by a Grand Rapids, Mich., police officer. “And those words were ‘We aim to be Earth’s safest place to work. We are committed to ensuring the safety and wellbeing of all Amazon employees every day.’ ”

Crump and January were joined by several other people, including four people who survived the tornado at the facility, and said they now suffer from PTSD.

“Because of Amazon’s apathy and greed, I had to do what no mother should. Bury my child,” January said.

Taking ownership. It’s what true adults do.

I know she is still in mourning, but his former employers are not really to blame for his death. He could have said he was not availble. When you’re called on your day off, you do not owe your Boss any explanation as to why you’re ‘not available’. That’s your business, but one has to be bold enough to speak up for yourself. I do hope the grieving Mom is not making this publicly posted blame as a way to acheive some monetary settlement. Settlement for what? No crimes were broken.

I don’t think that Amazon was wrong for calling the son in on his day off. Lots of places do that.

That said, I am a bit surprised that an Amazon warehouse in the middle of tornado alley doesn’t have a safe room underground. Most warehouses have a high space to worker ratio, so it wouldn’t have been that big a deal to dig one on the premises. Just a thought.

There’s always a lawyer around for these kinds of people. Always. Deep pockets attract foul-smelling beasts.

They have them available above ground as well. A bit claustrophobic (they have port holes) but for the short time a tornado is bearing down on you, worth it.

Anybody could be called in to work anywhere and something like this might happen. How is this Amazon’s fault?

I wouldn't trust one above ground if I didn't have to. Dorothy's family had the right idea.

How is this Amazon’s fault?

Two reasons: Benjamin Crump and deep pockets.

I think the Mom showed her hand as she “appeared with attorney Ben Crump”.

I’m OK if she scams some Bezos Bucks, but Amazon cannot be held responsible for a tornado.

“Amazon warehouse in the middle of tornado alley doesn’t have a safe room underground.”

That’s beyond irresponsible. (Grew up in tornado alley.) That’s what Mom should be miffed at and sue.

Can’t imagine why the mother thinks it’s Amazon’s fault a tornado killed her son. What’s next, suing the nearest guy with deep pockets because lightening killed your son? Or an asteroid killed him? Absurd. What happened to loser pays? Didn’t that used to be a thing? Should bring it back, especially for frivolous lawsuits.

I lived in Ogle County (south of Rockford) and experienced the winds from nearby tornadoes. When you see the sky turn that same sepia tone as Kansas in the opening scene of the Wizard of Oz, it is time to go home.

Amazon should not be held responsile for an act of nature. When they called her son for an extra shift he could have said that he can’t.

This woman is after money and because she is black she will probably get something. I feel bad for her losing her son, but she seems to be more about getting her hands on some big bucks she does not deserve.

A lot of places don’t have underground shelters . Unless the State requires them to do business, they shouldn’t be able to be sued.
