Like it all unfolded in 1776, when George Washington was defeated and run out of New York (Battle of Long Island, August 27, 1776) by a well organized and overwhelming force of just arrived 32,000 British Army regulars and foreign Hessians, causing him to retreat in repeating defeats one after the other (Manhattan, White Plains, Fort Washington) resulting in ultimately running across New Jersey and into Valley Forge Pennsylvania with a badly reduced and injured army 6 days before Christmas in December 1777.
