President Obama’s 2010 budget seeks to double U.S. aid payments to other countries despite a $1.75 trillion deficit and the worst recession in over a quarter of a century. Obama’s landmark proposal heralds a massive increase in the size of government, and “puts the United States on a path to double U.S. foreign assistance,” according to the White House budget overview. I watched The African Queen, again this week. That classic movie, starring Humphrey Bogart and Katherine Hepburn, offered a clear explanation of several current news events this week. The European Commission announced Wednesday aid of 1.35 million euros to Palestinians in the Gaza Strip whose houses have been demolished, and accused Israel of "reckless disregard" for civilian lives. The houses of more than 10,000 people were destroyed or damaged during Israeli army incursions into the Gaza town of Rafah in May and June, according to the European Union executive. The money will help repair homes, water infrastructure and two schools in Rafah, as well as to assist Palestinians buy replacement household goods, it said in a statement.
