All, Here a scoop to Freepers which is just now hitting us security pro's. There is a first vulnerability that uses the MS Bug that MS addressed with MS 03-026 two weeks ago. It is calling itself MSBLAST.exe and is spreading in the wild unbelievably fast. http://isc.sans.org/diary.html?date=2003-08-11 A first advisory from McAffee has just been published: http://us.mcafee.com/virusInfo/defa...&virus_k=100547 Once it finds a vulnerable system, it will spawn a shell on port 4444 and use it to download the actual worm via tftp. The exploit itself is very close to 'dcom.c' and so far appears to use the "universal Win2k" offset only....
  • Old SCO Also Donated Code to Linux

Old SCO Also Donated Code to Linux Well, knock me over with a feather. It turns out that old SCO, The Santa Cruz Operation, also donated code to Linux. There is an article dated June 12, 2000, that tells us all about their Linux distribution and their plans, which included scaling it to the enterprise, as marketroids like to call it: "While SCO may be rolling out its Linux distribution long after Red Hat and Caldera hit the market with theirs, SCO is no open source Johnny-come-lately. The company offers support services to Caldera and TurboLinux customers. In addition, the...
  • IBM Slaps SCO With Open Source Licensing Countersuit

IBM went on the offensive Thursday when it added a countersuit against the SCO Group to the multibillion-dollar legal battle between the companies. The countersuit alleges, among other things, that SCO Group has violated the GNU General Public License, under which it accepted Linux contributions and distributed the open-source operating system. The suit also alleges that SCO Group doesn't have the right to revoke IBM's Unix license--an allegation backed by Novell, the former owner of the Unix System V source code that sold IBM its license. IBM is also attempting to turn the tables on SCO Group by alleging that...

SAN FRANCISCO (Reuters) - In the high-stakes legal showdown between Linux users and SCO Group Inc. SCOX.O over whether that company is owed unprecedented license fees, advocates for the free software on Thursday showed no signs of blinking at their biggest annual gathering. SCO, which claims its blueprint for Unix software is embedded illegally in versions of the free Linux operating system, is suing International Business Machines Corp. IBM.N for billions and has threatened companies that they must pay to use Linux or face litigation. But IBM and Linux distributor Red Hat Inc. RHAT.O fought back this week against Lindon,...

For education and discussion only. Not for commercial use. DANGERS associated with radioactive waste, and the problems and huge expense of its disposal could soon end after a Scottish researcher discovered how to neutralise its harmful effects using light. New research by a leading scientist at the University of Strathclyde could revolutionise the waning fortunes of the nuclear power industry - restoring both political and public faith in an energy source that was once hailed as the future of clean, green energy. Using a laser, Professor Ken Ledingham has successfully transformed one of the deadliest products of nuclear fission into...

<p>SAN FRANCISCO—With legal terms such as liability, indemnification and lawsuit as prominent themes of the LinuxWorld show here, a small software company has addressed the issue with a solution to find offensive code.</p> <p>Aduva Inc., Sunnyvale, Calif., has developed a system known as OnStage that contains a feature known as SCO Check that will "conduct a complete inventory of your system and if SCO [The SCO Group] identifies some illegal code, we can do a check to find the code, identify it and then automate the replacement of that code" with Red Hat Linux or an appropriate fix, said Chris Van Tuin, director of customer service for Aduva.</p>

SCO Media Statement Re IBM Counterclaims         THURSDAY, AUGUST 07, 2003 4:17 PM - PR NewswireLINDON, Utah, Aug 07, 2003 /PRNewswire-FirstCall via Comtex/ -- We view IBM's counterclaim filing today as an effort to distract attention from its flawed Linux business model. It repeats the same unsubstantiated allegations made in Red Hat's filing earlier this week. If IBM were serious about addressing the real problems with Linux, it would offer full customer indemnification and move away from the GPL license. As the stakes continue to rise in the Linux battles, it becomes increasingly clear that the core issue is bigger than SCO (SCOX)...

update IBM on Thursday filed counterclaims against the SCO Group in the continuing legal battle over the Linux operating system. Special CoverageIt's a LinuxWorld Read CNET News.com's complete coverage from the Linux gathering. In a 45-page document that it filed late Wednesday, IBM argues that because SCO distributed a version of Linux under the open-source General Public License (GPL), it can't claim that Linux software is proprietary. IBM also argues that SCO software violates four IBM patents and that the company interfered with IBM's business by saying it had terminated IBM's right to ship a Unix product, AIX. IBM is...
  • IBM microscope sees reactions in action - A breakthrough for using electron microscopes

A breakthrough for using electron microscopes from IBM is allowing scientists to observe the secret life of atoms. Researchers at IBM have devised a way to observe liquid chemical reactions as they occur with a transmission electron microscope. The technique has already been used to capture images showing how copper atoms bond to each other and to electrodes. Such information could eventually lead to smaller circuits or more efficient chip manufacturing processes because chip designers will have exact information on what happens when molecules meet. "They (chip designers) know the right conditions for growing copper films, but they don't know...

On August 5th, Red Hat finally told The SCO Group and the world that they weren't going to take SCO's anti-Linux FUD anymore in a law suit filed in Delaware federal court against SCO. Reading from a prepared statement, Mark Webbink, Red Hat's general counsel said, "We filed this complaint to stop SCO from making unsubstantiated and untrue public statements attacking Red Hat Linux and the integrity of the open-source software development process." SCO isn't taking this lying down. SCO vehemently denies that they're spreading FUD. Instead, CEO and president Darl McBride claims that "We have been educating end users...

'SCO' code could be written out of Linux By Robert Jaques [04-08-2003] Analyst predicts plan to 'tax' Linux community is destined to fail SCO Group's attempts to 'tax' the Linux community for copyright infringement are doomed to failure because developers will simply rewrite the Linux kernel, analyst Butler Group has predicted. The analyst said that although a number of companies might pay SCO once for the UnixWare licences it claims they need, such an aggressive stance by SCO would not help it to sustain any long-term business relationships. SCO is selling licences for Linux systems based on kernel version...

My computer, which had been running Windows 98 SE, recently developed a problem which left the hard disk unable to boot into Windows. I have created a startup disk which does at least allow me to get to a command line prompt. I have done countless CD and DIR commands, but am unable to find my .WAB (address book) or .MBX (mailbox) files. Any help would be appreciated. Part of the problem, of course, is that the directory names are truncated. Is there a DOS-based "file search" tool that I could use, that would let me find the files? Thanks.

PALMDALE - With a light show worthy of a rock concert, the latest star in the Air Force's arsenal was unveiled Friday with the rollout of the first production-model Global Hawk. The Northrop Grumman hangar at Air Force Plant 42 was filled with dignitaries and employees to cheer the bulbous, grey-and-white unmanned vehicle. Like the Wright Flyer did 100 years ago, "Global Hawk will lead the way in another revolution in aviation - unmanned systems," said Scott Seymour, corporate vice president and president, Northrop Grumman Integrated Systems. The futuristic-looking aircraft is a high-altitude, long-endurance, unmanned aerial reconnaissance system designed to...

Stephen Beres writes: Cleaning out my basement, I came across some Dark Matter. I couldn't sweep it up, or vacuum it or anything. It just lay there, very dark. Just kidding. Seriously now, if you had a kilogram of Dark Matter, what would its physical and chemical properties be? Would it be invisible? Containable? Measurable? In short, how would Dark Matter manifest itself in our world? Would it just sink invisible into the Earth's gravitational field? Is there any way to contain it or study it? How would you know Dark Matter if it were present? Could it be present...

The prospect of a new generation of devices that harness the spin of electrons has moved closer following a recent experiment in the US. Min Ouyang and David Awschalom of the University of California at Santa Barbara have transferred electron spins across molecular 'bridges' between quantum dots for the first time. Even better, the pair found that they could transfer the spins most effectively at room temperature (M Ouyang and D Awschalom 2003 Sciencexpress 1086963). Conventional electronic devices manipulate the flow of electronic charge, but spintronic devices would also exploit the intrinsic angular momentum or spin of electrons. Several proposals...

The Article Questioning SCO: A Hard Look at Nebulous ClaimsEben MoglenUsers of free software around the world are being pressured to pay The SCO Group, formerly Caldera, on the basis that SCO has “intellectual property” claims against the Linux operating system kernel or other free software that require users to buy a “license” from SCO. Allegations apparently serious have been made in an essentially unserious way: by press release, unaccompanied by evidence that would permit serious judgment of the factual basis for the claims. Firms that make significant use of free software are trying to evaluate the factual and legal...
