  • Big, bold, immediate action needed to stimulate and jumpstart jobs and the economy for the short-term and beyond?

Pelosi wants to spend $3 trillion. McConnell says no more than $1 trillion. But, of course, both want to expand federal power and bureaucracy to pick the winners and losers while they dole it out. And there's no way they can keep it under $3 trillion, much less $1 trillion. Ok, if it's worth doing it should be big, bold, immediate and without growing the bureaucracy and without allowing government to pick the winners and losers. I've seen suggestions that we should have a payroll tax holiday until the end of the year. That would be a good start and...

MONTPELIER, Vt. – Brad Borofsky hopes a sales tax holiday this weekend will draw more buyers to his outfitters shop in search of kayaks, canoes and other high-end outdoor items. After all, who wouldn't like a break on their taxes? Yet a growing chorus of national tax experts — both on the right and left — are panning sales tax holidays as a gimmick that does little to boost the economy and hurts already-sagging state revenues more than they help consumers. Massachusetts, Maryland and the District of Columbia have cut back on sales tax holidays or scrapped them altogether recently....

Tax Holiday by: Alanna Hultz, April 08, 2009 The American Jobs Creation Act of 2004 was enacted in response to a World Trade Organization order and European Union trade sanctions related to a little known tax break for U.S. exporters. Included in the American Jobs Creation Act of 2004 was a one-time tax holiday for the repatriation of foreign earnings by U.S. multinationals, which allowed 800 corporations to repatriate 300 billion at a reduced tax rate. Recently, Senator Carl Levin (D-Mich), chairman of the Permanent Subcommittee on Investigations, initiated an investigation to examine whether these firms used the repatriated earnings...

A great economic stimulus proposal by Rep. Louie Gohmert of Texas has gotten lost in the midst of bailout mania, spending madness, political scandals and the media’s pom-pom parade for President-elect Barack Obama. It’s called a tax holiday. Rep. Gohmert has introduced legislation (H.R. 7309) that would suspend all federal income tax on wages earned and FICA withholding for two straight months. According to American Solutions, headed by former Speaker of the House Newt Gingrich, it would cost less than the remaining $350 billion in already authorized bailout funds. More importantly, the tax holiday would be a direct stimulus to...

U.S. Rep. Michele Bachmann, R-Minn., says the American economy can best be helped if taxes are not collected for a short time. "In this sagging economy, our nation's taxpayers are really hurting, and this year's marathon of bailouts hurts them more than ever," she said. "I come here today to support the tax holiday legislation because it's time that Washington bail out Americans, not bury them with extraordinary debt." Federal taxes would be suspended in January and February under the bill she co-sponsors. Democrats who control Congress are not expected to back the idea.

Gohmert Proposes Skipping Fed Income Tax By ADAM RUSSELL Staff Writer U.S. Rep. Louie Gohmert, R-Tyler, proposed that the U.S. government stimulate the country's economy by collecting no federal income tax this year. Aside from the hundreds of billions of dollars in bailout money appropriated by Congress and the Senate recently, Gohmert said, total economic obligation has topped $7.7 trillion so far. Gohmert said, as the current administration continues obligating trillions of taxpayer dollars to bail out failing businesses, a better, cheaper solution to revive the economy would be to suspend collection of the estimated $1.2 trillion the U.S. Treasury...

Christmas came four months early for many retailers across Alabama, thanks to the state's first sales tax holiday Aug. 4-6. That weekend, the state eliminated its 4 cent sales tax on back-to-school items, and more than 200 cities and counties joined in. Shoppers saved as much as 10 percent in combined sales taxes, and retailers enticed them further with deep discounts on many items. The result? In many shopping centers, Christmas-like crowds packed stores' aisles. For most retailers, it was a happy holiday, indeed, according to a statewide survey of 186 retailers by the Alabama Retail Association and General Growth...

BATON ROUGE, La. (AP) — The Senate passed a proposal for a ``sales tax holiday'' lasting six days in December, plus a string of tax breaks aimed at helping Louisiana businesses rebuild after Hurricanes Katrina and Rita. The six-day tax-free proposal is the most extensive of several such bills in the Legislature. Another would create a three-day break from sales taxes; a third would waive most sales taxes on Dec. 10. A bill by Derrick Shepherd passed today would waive the 4 percent state sales taxes for items costing less than 25 thousand dollars from December 6th-11th. Items bought for...
