Pay no sales tax Aug. 3-5
On school supplies, clothes during tax 'holiday'
Virginia's second sales tax holiday is set for Friday, Aug. 3, through Sunday, Aug. 5. During the three-day event, certain purchases will be exempt from the 5 percent state and local retail sales tax.
Sales tax will not be charged on school supplies priced at $20 or less per item, or on articles of clothing, including footwear, costing $100 or less each.
The holiday, approved unanimously by the 2006 REPUBLICAN General Assembly, will take place each year on the first Friday-Sunday period in August. Earlier this year, the REPUBLICAN legislature approved two additional sales tax holidays. A four-day tax holiday is set for October that exempts certain energy-efficient appliances. Another week-long tax holiday will begin in May 2008 for purchasing equipment to prepare for hurricanes.
No exact figures were available for tax savings last year during the state's first sales tax holiday, but the state Tax Department's estimates were about $3.6 million. That jumps to an estimated $3.8 million for the 2007 back-to-school holiday.
Rules governing the 2007 August tax holiday are the same as last year. All shoppers will avoid the sales tax when buying exempt items in Virginia during the tax holiday. There is no requirement that purchases be made for a student or for school purposes.
Information that includes policy guidelines for retailers, a list of frequently asked questions, a list of eligible school supplies, a representative list of eligible clothing and a PowerPoint presentation on the three tax holidays is available on the Virginia Department of Taxation's Web site at http://www.tax.virginia.gov/site.cfm?alias=STHoliday
Texas dates - Aug. 17, 18, 19.
I want all the NRST advocates to look at the sales figures from this holiday, and see if they tend to stand out from the sales on days when the taxes are in force.
Here’s Texas’ list. Once again it’s ridiculous. Belts with buckles NOT TAXED, belts without buckles TAXED. Thank goodness the Back To School tax free weekend includes adult diapers for the administrators.

Thank you!
Thanks for the total listing by state!
Thanks for the listing, Severa.
I’m surprised Maryland is not on there. MD did it before VA and I took great advantage of it in 2005 because I live near the state line and do a lot of my shopping there anyway.
But it looks like this year I will be making a trek to VaBeach, at least for putting school clothes on layaway at K-Mart. Other than Rose’s the only other “major” retailer in this county is Peeple’s.
Oh well, it’s a good excuse to get my husband to take us to VaB!!!
Ours is August 3-5. I don’t like having it so early - they don’t need fall clothes until late October!
I agree with you about the fall clothes, but it works for me because I buy the fall/winter clothes and put them on layaway.
It was a lot easier for me before WM did away with the layaway, but hubby is in VA Beach everyday, so it’s no big deal.
Our problem is that they’re growing so fast that you can’t buy what fits in August and wear it in October!
