NASHVILLE — Tennessee’s first tax holiday for families doing back-to-school shopping for supplies and clothing is set for Aug. 4-6.

Gov. Phil Bredesen said today the holiday begins at 12:01 a.m. Friday, Aug. 4, and ends at 11:59 p.m. on Sunday, Aug. 6.

During this time, consumers may purchase selected clothing, school supplies and computers without paying Tennessee's state and local sales tax on the items.

This holiday also includes purchases of qualified items sold via mail, telephone, e-mail, or Internet if the customer orders and pays for the item and the retailer accepts the order during the exemption period for immediate shipment, even if delivery is made after the exemption period.

"Education is the number one priority of my administration, and one the goals I set when I took office was to create an annual sales tax holiday to provide a break for Tennessee's working families as they prepare for the school year," Bredesen said in a release today.

"We are extremely excited about launching Tennessee's first-ever sales tax holiday," said Revenue Commissioner Loren L. Chumley. "We hope consumers take advantage of this tax-savings initiative.

Or you could buy online, out of state, and always avoid sales tax.

This is a little misleading because it talks about back-to-school items. It is not just kids clothing. I wonder how the poor retail stores are going to distinguish between the taxable and non-taxable items. Have they all had time to update their cash register software?

There is a list of exempt and non-exempt items at http://tennessee.gov/revenue/hottopics/alphalist.pdf

Shipping charges may erase any benefit from tax savings.

Computers? That might be a boon to state retailers if businesses buy all their computers those days.

If Dell is really smart, they'll offer one of their free shipping deals on the same day. The computer orders would clog their internet website!
