Long believed to be havens for hippies and bastions of liberalism ringed with high ivory towers, American campuses can no longer be painted with such broad strokes, according to a Harvard study. A survey recently conducted by Harvard University's Institute for Politics found 61 percent of college students approve of President George W. Bush's performance in office, a marked departure from national polling trends. Presently, only 53 percent of Americans agree with how Bush is handling his time in office, according to a recent Washington Post-ABC News survey. The study, however, is not without its skeptics.

Nethercutt hails Iraq's recovery 'It is a better ... story than losing a couple of soldiers every day' Rep. George Nethercutt said yesterday that Iraq's reconstruction is going better than is portrayed by the news media, citing his recent four-day trip to the country. "The story of what we've done in the postwar period is remarkable," Nethercutt, R-Wash., told an audience of 65 at a noon meeting at the University of Washington's Daniel J. In just six days, more than 3,500 Californians registered on Meetup.com to attend Arnold Schwarzenegger for Governor meetings across the Golden State, instantly making the Schwarzenegger meetings one of the most popular political destinations on the Web site. Since Sunday afternoon, 33 meetings for Schwarzenegger supporters have been spontaneously scheduled across California. The meetings were not organized by the campaign. “I am so proud that so many Californians are rising up to take back their government,” stated Schwarzenegger. “They may have replaced their pitchforks with laptops, but make no mistake – we are leading a people’s revolution in California. “The...

FORT HUACHUCA -- More than a thousand Misty Mates are heading to Iraq to help keep 11th Signal Brigade Soldiers cool. Jana Proctor, who started the fund-raiser Operation Desert to Desert on Aug. 17, delivered the misters to the brigade's commander, Col. Brian Hurley, on Wednesday morning. Hurley called Proctor "a lady who is a quiet professional." Presenting her with a plaque and his commander's coin, the colonel said the high temperatures in Iraq create unbearable conditions for soldiers. Even though it is cooling down to 100 degrees Fahrenheit during the daylight hours, the desert heat will continue well into...

An increasing number of Jewish Americans are backing Republicans in elections, though traditionally Jews, as a group, have overwhelmingly supported Democrats. A study by the Republican Jewish Coalition found 2002 exit polling data showed an increase of 60 percent among Jews who supported the GOP. In 2002, said RJC Executive Director Matthew Brooks, 35 percent of Jews who voted supported Republican candidates. That was up from the 21 to 26 percent during previous midterm elections. "This data simply confirm what we have been saying all along," Brooks said. "Jewish voters are increasing their support for the Republican Party. "Like other...

President Bush doesn't need to worry about any misgivings about the Iraq war from the citizens of Lexington County, one of the country's most conservative. Hours before the president addressed the nation, making the case for remaining in Iraq, more than 200 Lexington County residents showed up for a pro-troop rally at White Knoll High School. "I'm glad to be free, and I know that the people of Iraq need to be free," said Emma Moore, of Lexington, whose daughter is a member of the high school's ROTC program. The rally, sponsored by five area American Legion posts, two Veterans...

My letter: September 03, 2003 To the Editor: Thank you, President Bush, for your strength and leadership during these trying times. You have instilled in our country a renewed sense of pride and patriotism. Many Americans now realize that it's not the professional athletes or Hollywood stars who deserve our admiration, but our brave military, police and fire personnel. We have had zero terrorist attacks since 9/11/01, thanks in large part to your efforts to protect us. You were dead-on when you told the...

Supporting Gulf War 2.0 September 2003 By Sgt. Frank N. Pellegrini When Maj. Gen. David E. Kratzer was chosen back in January to take his 377th Theater Support Command (TSC) in Kuwait to lead the support operation for a war in Iraq, one of the first things he did was read Moving Mountains: Lessons in Leadership and Logistics from the Gulf War, which is the theater support memoir of Lt. Gen. William G. Pagonis, the commander of the first TSC--a man who knew what it was to build what Kratzer has likened to a "city in the sand." To launch...

ARLINGTON, Va. — The Marine Corps-Law Enforcement Foundation has donated millions of dollars in bonds to children whose parents died in the line of duty, and this war on terrorism is no exception, except that the foundation is awarding bonds across services and to children of coalition forces. “We said we were going to be doing this for the shooting part of the war, but we’ve had so many donations come in, we’re going to keep it going until the money is gone,” said Peter Haas, president and one of four founders of the New York-based foundation. “Shooting part,” refers...

`I Saw the Suffering' By Lynn Waddell, Newsweek Web Exclusive Faith Fippinger, a 62-year-old retired teacher of the blind, was one of more than 200 international human shields who hunkered down in Iraq early this year in hopes of discouraging a U.S. attack. FOR FIPPINGER, it was the latest in a long series of global-idealist adventures. She's lived in Alaska with Eskimos, with the Aborigines in Australia and taught in Fiji and Japan. But it may be the first time her travels land her in jail. While more than half the human shields left Iraq before the war started, Fippinger...

WASHINGTON (Talon News) -- Sen. John Kerry is a veteran of the Vietnam War. He mentions this fact in nearly every speech before supporters and his presidential campaign website currently has six images or stories on its main page devoted to his military background and his support for our troops. Republican National Committee Chairman Ed Gillespie this week challenged that support. "Candidate Kerry's rhetoric doesn't match up with Sen. Kerry's voting record," Gillespie charged on Monday. "Before he was a presidential candidate, Kerry voted to slash billions in defense spending and supported proposals to cut everything from Navy submarines to...

Has hell frozen over? The LA Times--what my eloquent colleague calls a "flower-power liberal newspaper"--has come out in support of President Bush's nomination of Daniel Pipes to the U.S. Institute of Peace (USIP). Will wonders never cease? The LA Times yesterday stated (click here for alternate source): But in trying to prevent Middle East scholar Daniel Pipes from joining the board of the U.S. Institute of Peace, Sens. Edward M. Kennedy (D-Mass.), Christopher J. Dodd (D-Conn.) and Tom Harkin (D-Iowa) are abusing their privilege. Pipes has a long record of stirring up controversy on Islamic affairs. Long before Sept. 11,...

MIAMI -- A group of Florida Republican state representatives is warning President Bush that he could lose their support for the 2004 election if he fails to adopt a tougher Cuba policy. The Cuban-American leaders drafted a letter to be mailed Monday asking the administration to revise its current migration policy, indict Fidel Castro for the 1996 shoot down of two planes by Cuban fighter jets, ensure that TV Marti is viewed by people in Cuba and increase aid to dissidents on the island. ``We feel it is our responsibility as Republican elected officials to inform you that unless substantial...

Bishop Sprague (Of Chicago, Ill.), Living in a Figment of his Imagination, Continues to Say that U.S. Should NOT have Ousted Saddam Hussein, Bishop Sprague (and Conference): Just yesterday morning I commented to some fellow Air Force Chaplain team members, as we sat together for breakfast at our undisclosed location in the war zone, how tired I was of politicians such as Mr. Dean using patriotic military men and women (who happen to all be volunteers) as a means to put down our involvement for peace. Now I must add once again my own church leaders and Conferences to this...
