I'm not saying I was ever primed to go for a dip in the Antarctic seas. I'm just saying that now I'm definitelynot going there: Scientists trawling on board a research vessel off the coast of Antarctica have caught a new undersea creature — one with 20 arms and a distinctive body, shaped a little bit like a strawberry. ... Although similar to other invertebrate ocean animals, like starfish and sea cucumbers, feather stars are distinct both in their 'large' size and 'otherworldly appearance' when swimming, the researchers said. The sheer horrific insanity of this thing is just something to...

Daily strawberry consumption was linked to improved cognitive function, lower blood pressure and higher antioxidant capacity in a randomized clinical trial. The study builds on previous research demonstrating the cardiovascular, metabolic and cognitive health benefits of strawberries. The double-blind, placebo-controlled study was conducted in 35 healthy men and women, aged 66 to 78. The participants consumed 26 grams of freeze-dried strawberry powder, equivalent to two servings of strawberries daily, or a control powder for eight weeks each. Following strawberry consumption, cognitive processing speed increased by 5.2%, systolic blood pressure decreased by 3.6% and total antioxidant capacity significantly increased by 10.2%....

An Israeli farmer earned a Guinness World Record when he harvested a massive strawberry that weighed 10.19 ounces. Guinness said Ariel Chahi, whose family owns the Strawberries in the Field business in Kadima-Zoran, Israel, holds the record for the world's heaviest strawberry after his enormous fruit weighed in at 10.19 ounces, beating the previous record of 8.82 ounces. The strawberry is of the Ilan variety, which was first bred by Nir Dai, a researcher from the Israel's Agricultural Research Organization. Dai, who was among the witnesses at the weighing of Chahi's strawberry, credited the strawberry's size to unusually cold temperatures...

It’s Throwback Thursday and I’ve got nothing. Except this old timey strawberry rhubarb pie I made: My neighbor gave me some rhubarb that her mother grows here. Mom and step-dad are in their 80’s and departed for their home in St. George at the beginning of the Wuhan Cooties and haven’t returned since leaving stand after stand of beautiful crimson stalks untouched. And when I say “crimson stalks” I mean red, through and through: It might be one of the old heirloom varieties of red rhubarb that, if grown correctly – proper soil pH, regularly divided, full sun – produces...

One-time Major League Baseball star Darryl Strawberry is stepping to the plate for President Trump’s reelection. Strawberry – who gained fame in the 1980s as the slugger who helped the New York Mets win a World Series – is one of the three guests taking part Thursday night in a Trump campaign live webcast titled "Faith in America: Black Voices for Trump" that’s being hosted by senior adviser Katrina Pierson. The baseball legend – who later in his career played for the crosstown rival New York Yankees as they won three championships in the mid to late 1990s – has...

We're sorry in advance if we've just ruined your appetite. But, the rumors are true: There might be small amounts of beaver butt goo in some of our favorite gummy candies, ice creams, sodas and baked goods. Don't worry though, it's safe. For the past 80 years, we've been using the "brown slime" emitted from beavers as a way to add vanilla, strawberry and raspberry flavors to some of our favorite foods. How exactly does this work? Beavers emit the chemical compound castoreum from their castor sacs. The sacs are located under the animal's tail and are secreted when they...

Thousands of boxes of strawberries have been stolen from a farm in Vinslöv, in Skåne, southern Sweden, with the search for the thieves gripping Swedes planning to feast on the fruits over Midsummer. The berries were taken from Vinslöv in the early hours of the morning, just a day before Swedes celebrate Midsummer, when the sweet fruits typically take centre stage. News of the heist quickly went viral, with reports of the theft among the most read in Sweden by Thursday afternoon. Swedes measure their strawberries in litres, and it is understood that 3,420 litres of the fruits were taken,...

As a rookie gardener, I planted some strawberry bushes two years ago. I did not get any fruit that year, but I was told that was normal. Last year I got fruit, but the strawberries were all no bigger than a thumbnail. What went wrong? Any advice would be appreciated.

According to one legend, the berry has been a force of nature since the beginning of time. The Cherokees have a creation myth that connects human harmony and the configuration of heaven and Earth to the sight of a single strawberry. The cosmic details are murky. But the culinary message is clear. Abbreviated, it goes like this: First Man and First Woman (think Cherokee Adam and Eve) have a blowout argument, after which First Woman proclaims: “You are lazy and pay no attention to me. I am going to find another place to live.” With that, she harrumphs off with that...

Odds are most supermarket strawberries come from California — that's where 90 percent of the berries are produced. And if the strawberries are not organic, they were likely grown in fumigated soil, which is creating a stir between scientists and regulators in California. The two groups recently faced off over the expected approval of a potentially dangerous pesticide. Currently, farmers use a fumigant called methyl bromide. But it is being phased out internationally because it damages the ozone layer. And the leading alternative — methyl iodide — has its own set of problems When the Environmental Protection Agency approved methyl...

GAINESVILLE (AP) - Former baseball star Darryl Strawberry walked out of prison Tuesday after serving 11 months of an 18-month prison sentence for violating probation on cocaine possession charges. Strawberry, wearing a gray sweatsuit and sneakers, hugged his wife as walked out of the Gainesville Correctional Institution and said "Thank you" to a guard. He then got into his Lincoln Navigator, which was driven by another man, and got about a half-mile away when they turned back to get Strawberry's personal belongings, which he'd forgotten. A guard handed him a plastic bag and he was off again. He made no...

Former baseball star Darryl Strawberry admitted violating probation Friday and said he is willing to accept the consequences even if it means prison time. Strawberry, 40, could face up to 18 months in a Florida prison for his 1999 arrest on drug violations and charges of solicitation of prostitution. He fought previous attempts by the state to send him to prison and was sent to drug treatment instead, but he has violated his probation six times. The latest violation involved breaking the rules of the Ocala-area drug treatment center by smoking, having sex with a female resident and trading baseballs...
