The report adds that 11.4 percent of Minnesota public school teachers have reported being threatened by a student. This is above the national average of 10 percent. The Bureau of Justice numbers are from the 2011-2012 school year, during a 12-month reporting period. • Republican candidates court voters in Sun City West

Sun City West was the hub of GOP politics Saturday when 28 candidates attended a forum sponsored by the Arrowhead Republican Women. The event at the Briarwood Country Club covered regional legislative races in Districts 21 and 22 on up to statewide races, including the contest for governor that attracted six candidates. (SNIP) Christine Jones said she decided to run because she was tired of politics as usual in Arizona. “When you love something, you want it to thrive, to prosper,” she said. “I’m running because I believe we can make Arizona the brightest star in the union.” District 26...

NORTH COUNTY -- After spending the last five years ending internal sniping and increasing the number of local office holders, San Diego County GOP chief Ron Nehring will now take that strategy statewide as chairman of the California Republican Party. "My focus will be on building the most sophisticated and advanced GOP party in the nation," the 36-year-old Nehring said Monday after being named chairman of the state political party on Sunday. "Being right with the best ideas is critical, but it's not enough to win. You have to match the best candidate with an equally powerful campaign organization." Nehring...

Few Democrats willing to stand up for statewide races By Jason Embry By W. Gardner Selby AMERICAN-STATESMAN STAFF Sunday, December 04, 2005 On the eve of an election year when the governorship, a U.S. Senate seat and other statewide posts are on the ballot, the Texas Democratic Party last week was urging visitors to its Web site to get behind four hopefuls — including the mother of NFL quarterback Drew Brees — running for the Austin-based 3rd Court of Appeals. Activists insist that their focus on races such as the 24-county judicial contest is not a sign that the party...

Rep. Jane Harman (D-Calif.) insists she has no plans to run statewide anytime soon, but it’s conventional wisdom in Washington and California that her centrist voting record and leadership spot on the Permanent Select Committee on Intelligence make her a prime candidate to succeed Sen. Dianne Feinstein (D-Calif.). The announcement that she had launched a political action committee, SecureUS, earlier this month only fueled the speculation. So far, however, Harman is not biting. “What I’m trying to do is make my best contribution for taking back the agenda in the House of Representatives and the Senate,” Harman said yesterday between...

In Shorewood, Village President Mark Kohlenberg is calling for a ban on smoking in all public places, with exemptions for the four bars and restaurants where smoking is now allowed. The effort in Shorewood and other communities in Wisconsin reflects a growing public awareness of the health danger posed by secondhand smoke. While these community efforts are useful, the problem they address is not just local. What is needed is a statewide ban on smoking in all indoor locations that are accessible to the public. A bill that would achieve this ambitious but worthwhile goal is being circulated in the...

Wilmette's brand-new indoor smoking ban became one of the hottest local issues in recent months, but the village also became one of the first battle grounds in a looming statewide fight over the issue. Five years after a similar law met with total failure before the Village Board, trustees last week voted 7-1 to effectively ban remaining smoking areas in restaurants, offices and even private clubs such as the American Legion. The law won't take effect until July 1, by which time public health advocates hope to win the fight in other northern suburbs. One factor which seemed to have...

Much has been made in the media about the sweep of California statewide offices by Democrats, the first time that had happened in 120-odd years.

It's certainly noteworthy, at least as a historic milestone, and it does underscore the decline of the Republicans in a state whose major statewide elections they once dominated. It stands in contrast, too, to the wins by White House-led Republicans in congressional, senatorial and statehouse contests in the rest of the nation.

Don Siegelman, trailing by some 3,200 votes after Tuesday's election, asked Thursday for a recount of every ballot cast in the state. Try Our Classifieds The request brought a harsh denunciation from a lawyer for Republican challenger Bob Riley of Ashland, but a spokesman stopped short of saying that legal action was planned.
Sacramento -- In numbers that reflect party allegiance far more than individual political star power, California voters favor Democrats in most statewide races including lieutenant governor and attorney general, according to a Field Poll released today .

But the poll is good news for some Republicans: State Sen. Tom McClintock, R-Thousand Oaks (Ventura County), has a 12-point margin over Democratic Steve Westley in the race for controller, while the contest for secretary of state between outgoing Assemblyman Kevin Shelley, D-San Francisco, and former Republican lawmaker Keith Olberg is about even. And Democratic incumbents don't hold insurmountable leads, said Mark DiCamillo, director of the Field Poll.
