Abortion politics is threatening to roil Florida Republicans’ chances in competitive state Legislature races amid widespread voter backlash. The Florida Supreme Court upheld a 15-week limit on abortion earlier this month, paving the way for a six-week ban passed by the state Legislature last year to soon go into effect. Now, a handful of vulnerable Republican state lawmakers who supported the six-week restrictions could be imperiled in November as anger over the ban grows.

In a notable victory for Florida’s minority party, Democrat Tom Keen was elected to the Republican-dominated Florida House in a special election held Tuesday. Facing off against “conservative patriot” Erika Booth, Keen won 51.3% of the vote in District 35, which covers parts of eastern Orange and Osceola County. The District 35 seat has been vacant since former state Rep. Fred Hawkins, resigned from the seat last year to take a job as president of South Florida State College.

Tennessee Rep. Gloria Johnson (D) said Tuesday on “CNN This Morning” that she hears racist statements “all the time” in the Tennessee State House. Johnson said racism was the reason her two black colleagues, Reps. Justin Jones and Justin Pearson were expelled, and she was spared. Co-host Don Lemon said, “You’ve been very in front after the vote last week that you felt race played a role in Jones and Pearson’s removal. But there are some of your Republican colleagues were saying in their estimation that it wasn’t race. That you argued, your attorney argued to the contrary that you...

For years already, the Democrats and their media cheering section have harped on the “insurrection” on January 6, 2021, when hundreds of those supporting President Donald Trump flooded the U.S. Capitol to object to what they saw as a faulty election. Now, a retired newspaper editor and author of “What Matters Most: God, Country, Family and Friends,” is explaining why a thousand people have been accused of crimes and jailed, another thousand are predicted to face arrest, and the messaging continues unabated.

Pennsylvania Democrats believe they have taken control of the state House for the first time in more than a decade, an outcome that was considered a long shot by even the most optimistic Democrats but that has not yet been confirmed by independent analysts. Republicans on Wednesday said the declaration of victory was premature. They’re pinning their hopes on a handful of close races in the Philadelphia suburbs where the candidates are separated by hundreds — or in some cases just dozens — of votes. Democrats said it showed that a favorable redistricting process in Pennsylvania gave them a fighting...

A coalition of Republican groups are calling for an occupation of the Georgia State House in response to Secretary of State Brad Raffensperger ordering the Dominion voting machines in the state to be wiped. The groups are also calling for a protest at Raffensperger’s home on Monday evening.Raffensperger claims that he was ordering them to be reset ahead of the senate runoff election, but a reset would wipe all votes from the general election — the results of which are still being hotly contested by the Trump campaign. The only reason the Georgia Secretary of State would order the voting machines to...

In the Illinois Capitol rotunda this month, several traditions are being celebrated. There's a Nativity scene for Christmas, a menorah for Hanukkah, and then something a little different: an arm holding an apple, with a snake coiled around it. It's a gift from the Chicago branch of The Satanic Temple. Called "Snaketivity," the work also has a sign that reads "Knowledge Is The Greatest Gift." Nearby stands a sign in which the state offers a civics lesson — and explains it didn't have much of a choice...

A Bay State lawmaker is calling on her colleagues to change the sign to an entrance for the Massachusetts State House named after Joseph Hooker, a Union general in the Civil War, saying his surname is tied up with a slang term for prostitutes and is demeaning to women. “Female staffers don’t use that entrance because the sign is offensive to them,” State Rep. Michelle DuBois, Brockton Democrat, told CBS Boston in a recently aired interview.

Miracle? State House passed a bill saying liberties ‘don’t come from governments, but from Almighty God’ May 10, 2017 | Scott Morefield | Print Article From whence do our liberties derive? Are they from the whims of man, of whoever has the power to grant or deny them at any given moment in history, or are they from an almighty, unchangeable force? It’s an important philosophical question, because if the answer is the latter, any attempts to deny humans their God-given liberties are by definition anti-God and worthy of opposition by decent-minded people.

In the south, the only state legislative chambers in Democrats’ control are the Kentucky House and the Arkansas House and Senate. Mike Huckabee, the former Arkansas governor and 2008 Republican presidential candidate, told Republican House candidates and their supporters Saturday at a fundraiser in Louisville that he believes that will change on Nov. 6. Huckabee, now a Fox News personality, said because House Democratic leaders such as Speaker Greg Stumbo have voiced support for Democratic President Barack Obama that they are out-of-step with conservative Kentuckians. Cathy Bailey, the former U.S. ambassador to Latvia, hosted the event at her Louisville home...

Ohio Public Safety spokesman Joe Andrews says about 1,000 people have been allowed into the Rotunda and Atrium for a committee hearing on the bill and additional visitors without appointments were turned away in the interest of safety. The heightened security came after a long President's Day weekend during which...

The last time Republicans controlled a statehouse chamber in Alabama, Ulysses S. Grant was president and Thomas Edison still hadn’t perfected electric lighting. But if the GOP’s gains are as big as many predict this election, Alabama could be one of many states that will see one or both statehouse chambers go from Democratic blue to Republican red. Democrats currently enjoy a 5-seat advantage in the Alabama Senate and a 15-seat advantage in the Alabama House. However, Tim Storey, an elections expert at the National Conference of State Legislatures, says that hold may not last. “If Alabama were to move to...

It must have been gloomy for Democrats when the nation's governors met last month in Boston for their annual summer get-together. The reason: If congressional races look bad for Democrats, the 37 gubernatorial contests are even worse. A quick survey of the political landscape shows six of the seven Democratic governors running for re-election are polling under 50% and in danger of losing, while all six GOP incumbents seeking re-election are expected to win. In the 24 open gubernatorial contests, Republicans lead in 15 and are tied in three others. More than half of Americans are likely to have a...
