NEW ORLEANS– Republican Govs. Bobby Jindal of Louisiana and Rick Perry of Texas may be on some Republicans’ short list for 2012, but they don’t appear on the straw poll taking place at the Southern Republican Leadership Conference. The nine candidates who made the cut include: former House Speaker Newt Gingrich, former Govs. Mike Huckabee of Arkansas, Sarah Palin of Alaska, Mitt Romney of Massachusetts, and Gary Johnson of New Mexico, as well as Gov. Tim Pawlenty of Minnesota, former Pennsylvania Sen. Rick Santorum, and Reps. Ron Paul of Texas and Mike Pence of Indiana. The 3,500 attendees are casting...

The headline on Politico’s resident Democratic Party cheerleader Ben Smith’s blog was curious: “Republicans convene in New Orleans, with no mention of Katrina.” What makes this such a puzzling headline is that residents of New Orleans that I talked to weren’t mentioning it either. Recovery from the devastating natural disaster has been slow but fairly steady, and those that I asked about the effort to rebuild were matter of fact about progress. One hotel worker I asked about Katrina recovery pointed to several reopenings of apartment complexes as evidence that things are getting better. She was a little frustrated with...

Excitement had been building in the room and it exploded when Sarah Palin walked onstage. Stunning in a red waist length blouse and black shirt, the applause was tremendous and the cameras are still clicking. “Just because we can does not mean that we should,” in reference to criticizing allies and “kowtowing” to foes. Comes out for “repeal and replace.” And “Don’t retreat, reload,” which gets her first standing O. She seems a little rushed, a little out of place. She’s speaking over applause lines. Maybe she has somewhere else to go....

Former House Speaker Newt Gingrich exhorted an audience of Republican faithful to stop President Barack Obama's "secular socialist machine" by winning the fall congressional elections and ultimately repealing the Democrats' centerpiece health care legislation. Gingrich spoke Thursday on the opening night of the Southern Republican Leadership Conference at the Hilton Riverside in New Orleans. A one-time history professor with a doctorate degree from Tulane, Gingrich rejected any claim to bipartisanship, calling the country's political split the most serious conflict since the years leading up to the Civil War. "The most radical president in American history has now thrown down the...

If Sarah Palin, with her mega-wattage superstar status sucking up all the available oxygen in the room, is it worth sharing a stage and competing for some attention? Between now and the first GOP nomination season debate a year from now, that will be the question asked over and over again by the smart political operatives plotting Tim Pawlenty's, Mitt Romney's, and other nonreality show starring Republicans' paths to the White House. The cattle call season for the 2012 Republican presidential hopefuls is upon us, but the media obsession with all things Palin and her knack for dominating a news...

... Palin’s speech is promised to be more than just another public appearance by the incredibly popular former Vice Presidential candidate of the Republican Party. At the beginning of April, President Barack Obama announced a new energy policy that would open up the waters off of the coast of Virginia for drilling. Governor Palin was not enamored of Obama’s policy shift as Reuter’s reported, “Palin said on her Twitter page that she agreed with House Republican leader John Boehner that Obama’s plan is aimed at getting his ‘job-killing, energy-depleting, burdensome’ cap and trade legislation through Congress.” Reuter’s also reported that...

With CPAC 2010 finished, media reports are swirling discussing Governor Palin’s absence from this event, which they billed as “mandatory” for conservative candidates for anything. Was it? SRLC the Real Proving Ground for Gauging A POTUS Run...

Baton Rouge – LA) Governor Sarah Palin announced today that she will speak to the 2010 Southern Republican Leadership Conference in New Orleans. “I’m looking forward to addressing conservative activists from across the south at the 2010 Southern Republican Leadership Conference. This is a great opportunity to listen and speak to those who are helping to set the direction of our party,” Governor Palin said. SRLC 2010 will be held on April 8-11, 2010 in New Orleans, Louisiana and will include the Republican Party’s activists, donors, elected officials and candidates from 14 southern states. “We’re excited to have Governor Palin...

Going into last weekend's Southern Republican Leadership Conference, Massachusetts Gov. Mitt Romney and his staff said they were expending no energy on and had only fleeting interest in a straw poll assessing the potential 2008 presidential candidates. Even after he finished a surprising second in Memphis, behind Tennessee native son Sen. Bill Frist, Romney was modest, declaring: "I really don't read into a straw poll very much, certainly not at this point. This is, what, three years away from the '08 race?" It turns out not all his supporters had a similarly distanced view. Roughly 200 Romney backers camped out...

From an email to Kathryn Jean Lopez: I was a delegate at the Southern Republican Leadership convention and voted today for Mitt Romney in the straw poll. It was an exciting experience. Mitt's speech on Friday was well received and there were at least two standing ovations during his presentation. All in all, I thought the convention was a rousing success and I was gratified to see Mitt come in second. In watching the post-straw poll coverage on MSNBC (where was Fox News during all of this?!!), Chris Matthews opined out loud that he thought Romney's campaign probably had success...

Thank you, Senator, for that kind introduction. [Senator Lamar Alexander] And thank you for hosting us here in Tennessee. This is a great place to hold this conference … and not least because of the leadership that you and Senator Frist have shown over the years. With Senator Frist retiring this year, there are some big shoes to fill. And I look forward to working together to make sure those shoes are filled by another strong, principled Republican. Since the beginning of political parties in this country, party chairmen have had a simple job at events like this: Come and...

Restless Republicans are already looking beyond the embattled Bush presidency to the 2008 campaign. Nearly 2,000 GOP activists opened a weekend conference Friday to hear from presidential prospects and share strategies on a conservative agenda that many believe Washington has forsaken. [snip] The dynamic to watch is how far the speakers and conference attendees distance themselves from Bush or the Republican-led Congress while urging the party to return to its conservative values. Despite controlling the White House and Congress for most of the past five years, many Republicans feel both have fallen short on a number of issues including tax...

We heard some buzz about this last night, but this morning's front-page story in the Tennessean about the hometown boy's big win, also includes some interesting nuggets on how MA Gov. Mitt Romney was able to score his impressive second-place finish. Romney, very quietly, worked with some Volunteer state supporters to bring in some college students from Union University. The school, which, btw, is affiliated with the Southern Baptist Convention, is in Jackson, TN, in between Memphis and Nashville. Also note in the story, the efforts of Romney's Southern backers to cast him as the best candidate in the field...
