Recently, states and communities have started to ban “saggy pants,” requiring those with their pants too low to pay a fine for indecency. The latest city to support the ban is Pikeville, Tennessee. If residents are caught sagging, they will be charged a $25 fine. The ban has raised questions over whether or not the government has the right to institute laws that regulate someone’s fashion choices. There are also doubts as to whether police will take the time to enforce the law. “All I know is we just don’t want them running around half-naked on our streets,” Pikeville Mayor...

Saggy pants in schools are such a menace to society that school boards will now be forced to outlaw them. Yep, that's what our state legislature decided last week, by passing a "nanny state" bill introduced by Memphis' own Rep. Joe Towns Jr. The law requires local school districts to create and enforce a ban on "clothing that exposes underwear or body parts in an indecent manner that disrupts the learning environment." It covers girls' sports bras, and was a weakened version of what Towns proposed three years ago. The earlier bill would have made it a criminal offense for...

You may not like seeing thugged-out kids walking around with their drawers hanging out of their sagging trousers, but it's their Constitutional right to show their skivvies if they want to. So says Palm Beach County Judge Laura Johnson. She ruled this week that Riviera Beach, Fla.'s saggy pants law is unconstitutional. Despite how "tacky or distasteful" saggy pants are, people still have the freedom to walk around the city's streets wearing them, the judge said. The law entered the books in July 2008. It prohibits people from wearing pants that sag low enough to reveal underwear. The first offense...

Song Links Saggy Pants to Being Gay The Bryant Park Project, October 26, 2007 · A new campaign by the city of Dallas targets the hip-hop style of wearing your pants low enough that your boxers are showin — and part of your posterior, too. The campaign has a signature song, "Pull Your Pants Up," by Dooney Da' Priest, that links so-called saggin' with being gay. After the BPP blogged NPR's original report on the public service announcement, listeners objected to lyrics they consider homophobic. Andrew Jones commented on a line about living "on the down low" — common slang...

It's a fashion that started in prison, and now the saggy pants craze has come full circle - low-slung street strutting in some cities may soon mean run-ins with the law, including a stint in jail. Proposals to ban saggy pants are starting to ride up in several places. At the extreme end, wearing pants low enough to show boxers or bare buttocks in one small Louisiana town means six months in jail and a $500 fine. A crackdown also is being pushed in Atlanta. And in Trenton, getting caught with your pants down may soon result in not only...
