Sabbaticals for Dummies by: Malcolm A. Kline, January 16, 2008 Those of us who have long been curious about what professors do on sabbatical could glean one sort of an answer from Oregon University English professor Edwin Battistella’s tongue-in-cheek (we think) listing of “Twenty-Five things to do on sabbatical” that appeared in the Fall 2007 issue of The Montana Professor. Although Battistella was obviously in a whimsical frame of mind when he constructed the “to do” list, the suggestions look all too credible to some of us on the higher education beat. Some of us always thought that the answer...

Geez, that month I spent with a breakaway sect of the Seventh Day Adventists in Washington Heights was really an adventure. It just wasn't for me, though. Know what I mean? They were all like: "You must abstain from impure acts." And I was kind of skeptical initially. Then, they came back with: "Well, it's not like your whack game is getting any play in the first place. Just give it up already!" And I was all like: "Screw you buddy! I still have FreeRepublic." Thanks for being there, guys!

In early December of 2001, I got my first taste of Free Republic in Boston where I met Little Bill, Electric Strawberry (and I think Race Bannon was there to). Anyways, I was walking to the Boston Public Library for research when like most days in Boston, the Commie-Rats and liberals were protesting (I guess they needed to work more hours on the weekends). Anyways, the experience was by far amazing and in the months following, I would join up with the fellow freepers on Park Street every Saturday to...
