The senior instructor for the University of Iowa Reserve Officer Training Corps says that because of heightened emotions about the war in Iraq she will allow students to skip wearing their uniforms for some classes as a means of lowering their ‘‘profile.’’

Of all the bright and talented students in my high school graduating class, the most gifted of all was probably my good friend Tom Baker. Quick thinking, creative and enormously self-disciplined, Tom excelled in every subject - particularly the sciences. Tom was far and away our best student in physics and chemistry, and he put countless hours into his favorite area of research, oceanography. Before school, during lunch break and after school (at least, when there wasn't swim practice) - there was Tom in the lab, always dreaming up some new experiment, always excited about his latest discoveries. It was...

The Pro-America Campus MovementBy Jacqui GarofanoFrontPageMagazine.com | March 6, 2003 In light of the pending conflict with Iraq and the continued war on terror, there has been a phenomenon sweeping across college campuses of the nation. Since September 11, 2001, and also more recently, college students have been speaking up, even going so far as to form organizations, to support their country. Harvard Law, Brandeis, Princeton, Yale and Columbia University are among the schools where such activism is taking place. What the following groups have in common is a feeling of patriotism and seemingly a sense that it is their...

I was wondering if the daughters of any Freepers have been approached by Army recruiters both on and off college campuses to enlist. My daughter has been asked on several occasions both at Fordham and by recruiters on the street if she's interested in ROTC or in enlistment at the present time. Since she is a workout-aholic, I was wondering if that might affect her being canvassed. Is it the policy of the military to actively recruit women? I'm curious to hear any of your experiences.

IREDELL COUNTY, N.C. -- An investigation is underway in Iredell County after a pet dog was shot and killed by Junior ROTC members at West Iredell High School. The school district and the ROTC have taken disciplinary action. But some Iredell County School Board members are wondering why the students were armed in the first place and if the campus is the right place for guns and ammunition. There's a firing range behind West Iredell High School where students have been using real bullets for more than ten years. The students were told to take aim at a dog because...

It was impossible not to notice the new cadet. A week after terrorists turned airliners into missiles a year ago, the Junior Marines ROTC unit assembled in the Hickman Mills High School gymnasium before hundreds of students, teachers and parents. Everyone saw her. She wore her head scarf -- her hijab -- which showed she was a Muslim woman. Oh, God, Aliyah Shallo thought to herself. The high school junior had been stared at before -- but nothing quite like this. What is she doing here? Chris Hankins remembers thinking. He and the other teen-age cadets watched her step into...

http://www.NewsAndOpinion.com -- When the United States builds a missile-defense shield, it should leave a small hole right above Harvard University -- and Yale, Stanford, Columbia and Brown. Each of these institutions bans the U.S. Reserve Officer Training Corps (ROTC) from conducting classes on its campus. Until they let ROTC back on campus, let them defend themselves. Now, when America is under attack, it is vital that America's youth know the military personally, rather than buying professorial slander about the military-industrial complex and the "dark side" of the U.S. armed forces. Still, many top-notch universities ban ROTC. Harvard, Yale, Stanford, Columbia...

June 11, 2002 The End of an Uncivil WarBy NICHOLAS D. KRISTOF AMBRIDGE, Mass. — The historical mutual sneering between America's soldiers and its universities is coming to an end. One of the scars from Vietnam was this reciprocal contempt, leading each side to despise a caricature of the other: redneck, baby-killing, misogynous storm troopers with the ethical sensitivity of Nazis; and arrogant, long-haired America-hating rebels, all wimps and probably mostly gay feminist Communists as well. Here in Ivy Central — dazzling this time of year with new Harvard graduates and pot-bellied fogeys oozing false modesty at reunions ("I...

In the wake of the September 11 attacks, President Bush asked the nations of the world to decide if they are "with us" or "with the terrorists." He might consider asking the same question of Harvard University.

Despite the current war, Harvard continues to ban ROTC from its campus. Alone among student groups, ROTC is not permitted to use university facilities or advertise on campus. At the same time, radical Islamic student groups operate freely, have held on-campus fund-raisers for terrorist front groups and had one of their leaders selected as a commencement speaker.

Just hours later, he will be commissioned as an Army second lieutenant and will...
