A new study finds clinically significant improvements in tinnitus from a mobile-phone-based therapy. Scientists are excited by the results from a trial of a new treatment for tinnitus. After 20 years of searching for a cure for tinnitus, researchers at the University of Auckland in New Zealand are excited by ‘encouraging results’ from a clinical trial of a mobile-phone-based therapy. For the study, 61 patients were randomly assigned to one of two treatments. Half (31 people) were given the prototype of the new ‘digital polytherapeutic.’ The other half (30 people) used a popular self-help app producing white noise. On average,...

Maundy Thursday, Good Friday, and Easter Vigil/Easter Day are all important, even essential, to the Christian faith. The church encourages all Christians to participate in all the liturgies of this weekend, because only then do we hear the whole story; only then do we remember and reconnect [“re-member”] emotionally, mentally, and spiritually to the fullness of God’s love for humanity through Jesus Christ.A focal point of our liturgical journey through the weekend is when the presider proclaims at the Easter liturgies, “Alleluia. Christ is risen.” and the people respond, “The Lord is risen indeed. Alleluia.” To make that joyful proclamation even more joyful,...

Police are searching for a mystery woman - wearing what looked like broken wrist restraints - who was filmed ringing a doorbell in Texas. The night-caller, apparently barefoot and semi-clothed, was captured on a surveillance camera approaching a home in Montgomery County. By the time the householder answered, she was gone. The resident reviewed the security footage and sent it to police. Montgomery County Sheriff is looking into the "suspicious incident".

Tinnitus is a problem that plagues up to 15% of the American population. It's a constant ringing in the ears without a cure. The American Tinnitus Association says hearing loss induced by loud noises or age is a frequent factor but trauma, ear canal blockages, and even taking some prescription medications can cause the ringing, a ringing for which there is no cure. "I tried masking, including have to have a fan on when I went to sleep or having a machine that makes sounds like the sound of rain," said Nick Stein who suffers from tinnitus. Nick Stein says...

NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) — Tinnitus affects 50 million Americans. It’s commonly called ringing in the ears, but it can bring other sounds like whooshing, hissing, whistling, buzzing and humming, and there’s no cure for the annoying, sometimes debilitating problem. But there’s now new technology that is helping alleviate the symptoms. Nick Stein says he has tried just about everything to relieve the ringing in his ears. “Having to have a fan on when I went to sleep, or having a machine that makes sounds, like the sound of rain or a burbling brook,” Stein said. So his doctor suggested he...

An Irish start-up has created a completely new approach to the treatment of tinnitus, which uses technology Ross O’Neill of Neuromod Devices with a Mutebutton For some it’s a high-pitched drone, for others a whooshing, hissing or buzzing. The layman’s name for it is “ringing in your ears”. The medical term is tinnitus and it can completely disrupt people’s lives making it impossible for them to work, sleep, socialise or concentrate on simple tasks. There is no known cure. However, a new product from Irish technology start-up, Neuromod Devices, looks set to revolutionise its treatment. The product is called Mutebutton...

Chronic tinnitus affects millions of Americans, and is the most widely reported disability among veterans. New research reveals the roots of the disease lie deep within the brain, and experimental therapies are providing hope for a cure. n Easter Sunday in 2008, the phantom noises in Robert De Mong’s head dropped in volume -- for about 15 minutes. For the first time in months, he experienced relief, enough at least to remember what silence was like. And then they returned, fierce as ever. It was six months earlier that the 66-year-old electrical engineer first awoke to a dissonant clamor in...

One should always understand that we are all different so that it is impossible to suggest a single form of treatment that will work in every case and for every person. However, there is a very simple technique that has often shown to be effective in many cases of tinnitus (ringing in the ears.) Any person who is afflicted by this very unpleasant condition would do well to at least give this simple technique a try. To perform this technique, put the palms of your hands over your ears. The fingers are on the back of the head. The middle...

Because of Sunday's gargantuan quake, planet Earth is ringing like a church bell. You can't hear it, but it's being measured at seismic stations around the world, including Columbia University's Lamont-Doherty Earth Observatory in Palisades, N.Y. It will last for three days, perhaps longer. The quake, which measured 9.0 on the Richter scale, was caused by the shifting of geological plates along a 600-mile area. This changed the Earth's mass. As the mass returns to normal, it moves back and forth, much like a church bell when struck by a tong, said Stony Brook geophysicist Teng-fong Wong.[snip] The quake...

NIAGARA FALLS, N.Y. -- A New York judge who jailed a courtroom full of people over a ringing cell phone is off the bench. He demanded that the phone be handed over, threatening to lock up everybody if no one came forward. When nobody did, the judge ordered all 46 people in the room hauled off to the city jail, where they were searched. Those who couldn't post bond were shackled and bused to the county lockup.
