Tinnitus is a problem that plagues up to 15% of the American population. It's a constant ringing in the ears without a cure.
The American Tinnitus Association says hearing loss induced by loud noises or age is a frequent factor but trauma, ear canal blockages, and even taking some prescription medications can cause the ringing, a ringing for which there is no cure.
"I tried masking, including have to have a fan on when I went to sleep or having a machine that makes sounds like the sound of rain," said Nick Stein who suffers from tinnitus.
Nick Stein says he's tried just about everything to relieve the ringing in his ears. His doctors suggested he try the Levo System.
Dr. Yu-Tung Wong of Cedars-Sinai Medical Center says recently the FDA cleared therapy trains the brain to ignore the ringing.
"It's very difficult to say you are going to be able to make the sound disappear completely, what you're trying to do with most tinnitus therapies is to make the sound more tolerable," said Dr. Yu-Tung Wong.
The technology mimics the sound of a patient's tinnitus. The patient then listens to the sound on an iPod while sleeping for 90 nights nonstop. The brain becomes more accustomed to the sound over that time.
"At night time when you're sleeping, your brain is more plastic, it's more receptive to these kinds of changes," said Dr. Yu-Tung Wong.
Nick believes the sound of his ringing has been reduced by 50%. "My mood has improved, my focus has improved," Stein said.
He says he's grateful he can now go for days and hardly notice his tinnitus.
Tinnitus RING LIST!.........................Can You Hear Me NOW????......................
I would love something...but a long time ago I just resigned myself to living the rest of my life with it. I think I have three separate tone, and boy, does it get loud.
But whaddya gonna do? There are worse things.
My dad has tinnitus...it’s worse when he takes an aspirin or ibuprofen. He says it’s pretty loud but he doesn’t mind it.
Someone get that phone!!!
I have had it so long, 40+ years, I just ignore it anyways...................
B^(................
Have you tried white noise hearing aids? The aids can be expensive, but are provided free via the VA.
Large doses of NSAIDs, aspirin or ibuprofen, can WORSEN tinnitus!...................
I’ve always had it but it is exponentially worse since my car accident induced concussion. I dropped a lot of cash for a masker which just swaps one noise for another. Maybe this would help.
I could have worse problems, I know. It’s just so obnoxious. There are times when I just want to have quiet.
Caffeine, and salt too.
No...I may do that.
I have lived with it for decades now, and when I lay in bed when it is quiet, it sounds like I have three tuning forks going full time about two inches from my ears!
So I may indeed check it out...thank you, the tip is much appreciated.

Same here
I tell my doctors nearly every time I get a physical or comprehensive checkup, and when I tell them, they don’t say much of anything...I guess so many people have it with no cure they just say...okay.
So do I.
I always ask if there’s anything ‘new’ on the horizon....................
I was using the drumming method and got some relief but only for an hour or so. One morning on a field trip I woke up with a stiff neck from the RV pillows not being my regular ones. When I got home I took a shower and let the pulsating shower head beat on the back of my head for about 10 minutes. Stiff neck gone along with the ear noise for about 7 hours. Morning ritual now with the water as hot as I can stand.
Please try it.

My Dad always had hearing problems he related to being in a unit like that in Korea. He said they were restricted from wearing hearing protection for fear of not being abe to hear the enemy if they were close by. Never quite understood that logic.
