WELLINGTON (Reuters) - Rolling Stones guitarist Keith Richards had surgery to relieve a blood clot on his brain caused by an accident while holidaying in Fiji, local media reported on Monday. The 62-year-old rocker was recovering in New Zealand after "brain surgery", Australian and New Zealand media reported. A spokeswoman for the band said last week that Richards only suffered a mild concussion from an accident in Fiji in late April and would not require surgery.

AUSTIN – Former Gov. Ann Richards said Tuesday that she is undergoing chemotherapy that periodically saps her energy but is optimistic about recovery and confident she will conquer cancer of the esophagus. "There is no doubt in my mind I will recover from this," she said. "I feel really positive about it." In her first detailed public discussion about last month's cancer diagnosis, Ms. Richards, 72, said doctors would review her condition after three more weeks of chemotherapy before deciding the next step, which could include radiation or surgery. She looked strong and upbeat as she talked with reporters. Ms....

"Diane Sawyer dropped by for a kiss and a hello. She was fresh from her chores filling in on ABC’s “World News Tonight” and said her stint on air with Elizabeth Vargas had been “refreshing and very exciting.” Another hit of the night was Cecile Richards, tall, blond and handsome, now moved to Manhattan to oversee Planned Parenthood. We had a reunion as we are pals via her famous mother, former Texas Gov. Ann Richards. Cecile and her wonderful family are going to be a great addition to New York. Documentary maker Alexandra Pelosi, the daughter of Nancy Pelosi, the...

Fox News is reporting that the latest album by the Rolling Stones, "A Bigger Bang," is "less than a month old, [and] already out of the Top 50.""A Bigger Bang" is the album that features "Sweet Neo-Con," a rare poltical song from the band, and one that attacks President Bush and Condoleezza Rice as "full of sh-t."Fox also reports that the latest album by frequent Bush critic Barbra Streisand, "Guilty Pleasures," "has caused little excitement even among her rabid fans."Both the Stones and Streisand are acts that appeal to the adult segment of the music buying public. Approximately half that...

``George Bush doesn't listen to us,'' Keith Richards said. But that's not the only reason the Rolling Stones, who open their world tour at Fenway Park today, won't be getting an invitation to the White House anytime soon. The Brit rockers' new CD, ``A Bigger Bang,'' comes out Sept. 6, but Matt Drudge and other right-wing media types are already foaming at the mouth after discovering the lyrics to one of its songs, ``Sweet Neo Con,'' a scarcely disguised savaging of the commander in chief.

Border Control Key to National Security By Paul Weyrich May 13, 2005 We must control our country’s borders. Former Deputy Secretary of Homeland Security Admiral James M. Loy appeared before the Senate Select Committee on Intelligence in February to counsel the Committee about improving immigration control at our nation’s borders. He delivered a message that was not given wide media coverage but one that many Americans already knew. Admiral Loy said: Recent information from ongoing investigations, detentions, and emerging threat streams strongly suggests that al-Qaeda has considered using the Southwest Border to infiltrate the United States. Several al-Qaeda leaders believe...

RICHARDS APPLAUDS NEW EFFORTS TO REMOVE LAKEFRONT SMELL MILWAUKEE - Today Rep. Jon Richards (D-Milwaukee) hailed the approval of a $138,000 State Coastal Management grant for the UWM WATER Institute to study and manage the source of the smell along Milwaukee's beaches. The smell is caused by Cladophora, which is an algae that grows on the lake bottom, breaks off and washes up on beaches and rocks causing a sewage-like smell when it decays. "The smell is disgusting an can be overpowering," Richards said. "The WATER Institute researchers are doing pioneering work in understanding Cladophora. With the Coastal Management grant,...
  • (Ma)Richards: Marching isn't just for the young

Former Texas Gov. Ann Richards, who was retired from the mansion almost a decade ago by now-President George W. Bush, remains not just a state but a national figure. And she's lending her support to the effort to try to keep the clock from being turned back on women's right to choose when and whether to have children. Richards, a divorced mother of four, recently wrote to friends calling for participation in an April 25 march in Washington, D.C., aimed at underlining the necessity to keep fighting for choice. "I was reluctant to go," wrote Richards, who helped Roe v....

Richards delivers dynamite talk at TAMIU BY TRICIA CORTEZ Times staff writer Former Texas Governor Ann Richards delivered a scathing indictment of the Texas public education system Tuesday night, focusing on its accountability and high-stakes testing system that is now being implemented nationally under the No Child Left Behind Act. "The current No Child Left Behind is a lie. It is a total lie. We are leaving children behind right and left," Richards told a packed house of the Fine and Performing Arts Center at Texas A&M International University. "Do you know what the current education system is in the...

Democrats are lining up for hot seat Thursday, September 18, 2003 One might question why anyone wants to be the chair of the Texas Democratic Party In The Time Of George Bush. But several folks apparently do. Molly Beth Malcolm announced Tuesday she'll resign Oct. 25. On that day, the State Democratic Executive Committee will choose a replacement to serve until the party's 2004 convention. Malcolm has held the office for 5 1/2 years. Given the Democrats' miserable fortunes recently, some observers would compare the chairmanship to being captain of the Titanic. With the Democrats completely out of power, it's...
