RICHARDS APPLAUDS NEW EFFORTS TO REMOVE LAKEFRONT SMELL
MILWAUKEE - Today Rep. Jon Richards (D-Milwaukee) hailed the approval of a $138,000 State Coastal Management grant for the UWM WATER Institute to study and manage the source of the smell along Milwaukee's beaches. The smell is caused by Cladophora, which is an algae that grows on the lake bottom, breaks off and washes up on beaches and rocks causing a sewage-like smell when it decays.
"The smell is disgusting an can be overpowering," Richards said. "The WATER Institute researchers are doing pioneering work in understanding Cladophora. With the Coastal Management grant, UWM scientists will be able to take research to the next level that will eventually result in a solution."
The WATER Institute's project will attempt to identify the factors leading to the increase in Cladophora blooms and evaluate whether this exacerbates the E.coli levels at area beaches.
The study will also identify management strategies.
"In addition to smelling bad, Cladophora may be causing elevated E. coli levels in the sand and water," Richards said. "This grant will allow the research to take place that will lead to an answer to that important question. We need to identify all possible causes of elevated levels of E. coli because keeping our beaches clean and open must be a top priority."

This tax-and-spending Dem cheers spending $138 grand to study what's causing a stink at Milwaukee's lakefront -- and identifies the cause by name in the first paragraph of his Press Release!

I take it this is a natural process....
The same spend-mo-money liberals who say we shouldn't screw around with nature want to do just that over a natural event????

Milwaukee wouldn't be Milwaukee without the stench.

If it is something that occurs naturally, then the environmentalists should be upset at man-induced changes in the ecosystem.

Cladophora...I think I dated her back in the '70's.
Tall, good dancer. Liked Boone's Farm a bit too much for my tastes..
