GOP has edge in donations for U.S. Senate campaign Dennis Camire / Times Washington Bureau Posted on December 6, 2002 WASHINGTON - Trying to score one more political victory, Republican lawmakers and party committees have donated at least $311,000 to help Suzanne Haik Terrell unseat incumbent Democratic Sen. Mary Landrieu in the Senate race in Louisiana.

At least 19 Republican senators, 15 GOP House members and 13 state Republican committees have chipped in to help Terrell during the past six weeks. Meanwhile, fewer Democrats have shipped less money to the Bayou State to aid Landrieu, who is in a contest that analysts say is too close to call with just two days remaining.

Democratic lawmakers, including six House members and 17 senators, have contributed $56,500 to Landrieu. They include $13,500 from Sen. Harry Reid of Nevada, the Democrats' second-highest leader in Washington; $15,000 from Sen. Barbara Boxer of California and $6,500 from Sen. Edward M. Kennedy of Massachusetts.

On top of that, former Democratic Sens. Russell Long and J. Bennett Johnston of Louisiana gave $1,000 each to Landrieu, who also received $1,000 contributions from Sen.-elect Frank Lautenberg of New Jersey and former Texas Gov. Ann Richards.

Almost all of Terrell's contributions from political action committees came from those controlled by Republican politicians and party committees across the country.

Key GOP senators alone have given at least $144,000, with Mitch McConnell of Kentucky, who is about to become the Senate Republicans' No. 2 leader, putting in $3,000 from his personal campaign committee and $15,000 from his leadership PAC. Trent Lott of Mississippi, the incoming majority leader, and Don Nickles of Oklahoma, currently the assistant GOP leader, gave her $15,000 apiece from their leadership PACs.

In the House, incoming Majority Leader Tom DeLay of Texas gave Terrell $5,000 from his leadership PAC. She also received $10,000 each from the leadership PACs of GOP Reps. Jim McCrery and Billy Tauzin of Louisiana. McCrery also gave her $2,000 from his personal campaign.

Sen.-elect Elizabeth Dole, R-

N.C., contributed $3,000 and also recently held a fund-raiser for Terrell.

New York Gov. George Pataki also gave Terrell $1,000 through his 21st Century Leadership PAC.

Terrell also benefited from state Republican committees in Alabama, California, Connecticut, Indiana, New Jersey, Ohio, South Dakota, New Mexico and North Carolina with each contributing $10,000 to her campaign.

Minnesota's GOP committee gave Terrell's campaign $15,000 and $5,000 each came from Missouri, Alaska and Iowa.

Landrieu's most recent campaign finance reports, which covered the period Oct. 17 through Nov. 17, showed she raised $907,641, with $527,911 coming from individuals and $402,785 from political action committees. The total receipts do not include money from political party committees, transfers from political committees and cash on hand at the start of the reporting period.

After paying $798,610 in expenses, the incumbent ended the period with $493,628 cash and has since raised more than $400,000.

In a twist, Landrieu reported contributions from traditional Republicans donors such as Abbott Labs, $3,000; ExxonMobil, $2,500; and Verizon, $5,000.

Terrell's report showed her contributions at $930,000, with $432,341 from individuals and $212,647 from political action committees. She also loaned her campaign $200,000.

After expenses of $384,515, Terrell had almost $1.1 million in the bank, not including the more than $285,000 raised since then or the $1.25 million produced by the New Orleans fund-raiser with President Bush on Tuesday.
