Mission resident Richard Kemp is used to people stopping and staring at his Madeline. The 53-year-old, in fact, relishes the attention he gets when people ask him about the companion that he has shared his life with for the past 11 years. Of course, this one doesn’t spend money. She just demands it. Lots of it. About $90,000. Madeline is no lady; she’s a tank. A 1944 olive-drab Sherman tank with twin diesel engines that rattle when she starts up. She doesn’t purr like her successors; instead, she lets out loud gurgles and burps — symbolic of an era when...

MARIETTA, Ga. - A group of Civil War re-enactors from Cobb County are headed to Washington next month to march in President Bush's inauguration parade. The group, called the 21st Ohio Re-enacting Unit, was invited by Vice President Dick Cheney after Cheney discovered his great-grandfather was a captain in the 21st Ohio Regiment. "We thought as a group that it would really be kind of a tribute, not only to the vice president and his great-grandfather but to the 21st Ohio, to be in the inaugural parade," said unit member Bradley Quinlin, a 50-year-old Suwanee resident who works as a...

While running for Senate against Bill Weld in 1996, a lot of the same issues that dog Kerry now were part of the political landscape. To placate some concerns, John Kerry allowed reporter Charles Sennott of the Boston Globe to watch five hours of his homemade video that was taken while he was on the Meekong Delta in Vietnam. The article, which is entited: "The making of the candidates: JOHN FORBES KERRY" was published on page A31 of the Globe on 10/6/1996. In it, Kerry admitted that he had used a video camera while in combat and had reenacted many...

After two centuries, it's still a sore point. Descendants of Alexander Hamilton and Aaron Burr will reenact the nation's most famous duel when they meet today in Weehawken, N.J., on the 200th anniversary of that sordid event. Alexander Hamilton, a brilliant secretary of the treasury under George Washington but his career on the skids, took one bullet in the midsection from a dueling pistol fired by his bitter foe, Aaron Burr. The mortally wounded Hamilton fell to the ground and died the next day at age 50. Burr, 48, was unscathed. Burr, an equally brilliant politician and vice president under...

For all of her secret life as the wife of a soldier in Santa Anna's army, Patty Tristan has tried to adhere to one policy. No camping in the mud. There was no such luck this weekend, when Tristan and more than 200 other people gathered at San Jacinto Battleground State Historical Park to recreate the 1836 victory that gave Texas its independence from Mexico. The battle re-enactment was cancelled after a thunderstorm Saturday morning was capped by a lightning strike to the 570-foot tall monument in the middle of the park. Lightning, static electricity and 100 pounds of black...

(First post - please forgive any screw-ups)New York is now being tortured by Kerry and Edwards commercials. Kerry's, of course, shows him in Vietnam. A couple of days ago this article came out in "The Hill" about how he returned to the scene of one battle and recreated the episode with a movie camera. Could the footage in the commercial be from that? Inquiring minds want to know.

COLUMBIA, S.C. - For school kids on the annual field trip to the Battle of Aiken, it's a day out of class, with funnel cake and the sight of blasting cannons spewing plumes of blue smoke. "It's stuff you can't get in the classroom," said Pete Peters, spokesman for the re-enactment event.Since 1994, the Sons of Confederate Veterans, sponsors of the re-enactment, estimate they have entertained and educated 25,000 to 30,000 schoolchildren about Confederate history and the Civil War.On Friday, about 2,500 children attended the battle. The event continues Saturday and Sunday.Set in February 1865, the Battle of Aiken was...

WASHINGTON CROSSING, N.J. -- A Christmas Eve downpour after heavy rain and snow made the Delaware River too dangerous Thursday for the annual reenactment of George Washington's bold Revolutionary War crossing, grounding the actors for the second Christmas in a row. Last year, sleet, wind and strong currents prevented the crossing -- conditions similar to what Washington faced as he and his men crossed from Pennsylvania to New Jersey in the dark on Christmas Day 227 years ago. That 1776 maneuver led to key victories in Trenton and Princeton and reversed the Continental Army's fortunes. Even with the crossing reenactment...

UPPER MAKEFIELD, Pa. -- Longtime re-enactors of George Washington's Christmas crossing of the Delaware River are threatening to boycott this year's event, the latest salvo in their ongoing battle with a state park administrator. At least 15 boatmen and an undetermined number of militia re-enactors are refusing to participate in the Christmas Day event, which commemorates Washington's 1776 crossing that led to crucial victories in Trenton and Princeton and reversed the declining fortunes of the Continental Army.

Organizers decided to let the fire, ignited by pyrotechnics in the lead-up to Pickett's Charge, burn for nearly an hour.
