MARIETTA, Ga. - A group of Civil War re-enactors from Cobb County are headed to Washington next month to march in President Bush's inauguration parade.
The group, called the 21st Ohio Re-enacting Unit, was invited by Vice President Dick Cheney after Cheney discovered his great-grandfather was a captain in the 21st Ohio Regiment.
"We thought as a group that it would really be kind of a tribute, not only to the vice president and his great-grandfather but to the 21st Ohio, to be in the inaugural parade," said unit member Bradley Quinlin, a 50-year-old Suwanee resident who works as a route manager for a vending company.
The re-enactors perform at Kennesaw Mountain National Battlefield Park, Andersonville and Chickamauga. They'll will march in the second division of the five-division inaugural parade, somewhere behind the "The President's Own" United States Marine Band, Quinlin said.
At Chickamauga, members of the 21st Ohio were heroes of sorts, Quinlin said.
The men held the line for six hours, firing more than 55,000 rounds of ammunition at the Confederates, enabling the Union army to withdraw back into Chattanooga.
"So they took quite a lot of casualties and stood and held their ground," he said.
Quinlin said marching in the inaugural parade is quite an occasion for the re-enactment group. The 1.6-mile parade route that passes the White House is the same route the regiment took during the Union Army's "Grand Review" march in May 1865, which celebrated the end of the war.
"All of us are kind of amateur historians. So, we love that anyway," Quinlin told the Marietta Daily Journal. "But the honor to march in an inaugural parade in itself, to realize the country that we have and that we can have peaceful exchange of power and then to be able to march in a festivity that has been going on for 55 inaugurations, is a thrill."

This is neat. I did re-enacting , unit was the 4th Virginia(yes, as in the Army of Northern Virginia). I know these guys will have a blast.
These guys are yankee re-enactors , I doubt the journalists will screw that up more than likely some Sons of the Confederate War Veterans will ant a place to march also.
And why shouldnt they?
I wouldn't be surprised if they thought Ohio was part of the Confederacy.
As a person who had a member of his family under the national media microscope for a month in the early '90s, you'd be surprised what journalists "screw up", omit, falsify, or merely make up. The experience really opened my eyes as to what smarmy scumbags warm the seats in the newsrooms across America. It's one of the primary reasons I am a solid conservative today.
Bet still stands.

There are lots of reenactment groups in Ohio and it wouldn't surprise me if there were a couple Ohioans in the Georgia group as well. The probable reason that these Georgians are reenacting this Ohio regiment is that they wanted to do a Federal unit and that particular Ohio regiment had an important role in a local Georgia battle.
Even though the group is headquartered in Georgia, doesn't mean that all its members live there. Some reenactment groups have members from various parts of the country who form up together at big reenactments.
I was a reenactor in the 3rd Arkansas Infantry which had members from New Jersey, Maryland, Illinois, Virginia and Pennsylvania but not one single Arkansan. One of the reasons we chose that particular unit was that nobody else was reenacting it at the time and it fought practically the entire war as part of the Army of Northern Virginia, except when it was in Tenn & Geo. with Longstreet in late 1863 early 1864.
I knew a number of re-enactors in Virginia, many of whom ended up with cameos in the movie "Gettysburg." They all had two full sets of kit...one Confederate, one Union. More often than not, some of these dyed-in-the-wool Southern boys had to put on the "hated" blue simply because there weren't enough Yankees to properly re-enact the battles. :)

Well, if they equate red states with the Confederacy, it is!
I just learned that the entire corps of cadets from VMI will be marching in the parade too.
Thanks for the history and background info on re-enacters, XRdsRev.
The article didn't make it clear, but I'm pretty sure you're right. The reason a group based in Georgia re-enacts an Ohio regiment is because that regiment fought in some important battles in Georgia and the area.
That is also a very neat addition. The entire corps of VMI cadets sounds like it would be a very large group.
It was this election. :)
So in the liberal minds the south now stretches to the Canadian border if you include Idaho, Montana, and North Dakota!
I'm not sure the libs will be happy about them being in the parade either. The VMI boys fought in the Army of Northern Virginia.
**So in the liberal minds the south now stretches to the Canadian border if you include Idaho, Montana, and North Dakota!**
Quite possibly! If you believe Confederacy=Jesusland, then those states are definitely included. I'll take 'em, anyway!
It is interesting that when the MSM talks about the Red states they seem to focus only on the south and ignore the western states.
The corps has about 1300 cadets. Usually only the regimental band participates, so this will be a good showing!
And we won the only battle we faught in (New Market)
