POLL Dancing? The Citizens Journal | John Anderson | Monday 28 August 2006 New poll from the Wall Street Journal, finds race much closer than The Stephens Media Poll, 8.8 percentage points. But sane people already knew that. This despite a couple mil on television adds by Mike Beebe (D), and Asa Hutchison (R) hasn't had any adds yet.The poll leaves Democrats doing a dance to defend it. I thought it was funny how the media here rushed to print as quickly as it could that ridiculous poll conducted by the Oakleafs which had Beebe ahead 52 to 31 percent, Even...

The probe is the latest in a series of controversial investigations into leaks of classified information during the Bush administration, including the disclosure of a CIA agent's identity that has resulted in criminal charges against former vice presidential adviser I. Lewis "Scooter" Libby. The Justice Department has also opened a probe into whether classified information was illegally disclosed to The Washington Post, which reported on a network of secret CIA prisons in Eastern Europe and elsewhere.

Lewis Libby, Vice President Dick Cheney's chief of staff, was charged Friday with lying to a grand jury during an investigation of possible intelligence leaks by members of the Bush administration. A five-count indictment unsealed Friday by special prosecutor Patrick Fitzgerald charged only Libby -- it did not name Karl Rove, a key political adviser to President Bush and his assistant chief of staff. Prosecutors reportedly told Rove o Thursday that while he wouldn't face immediate charges, he is still under investigation. The five counts included one of obstruction of justice, two of perjury and two of making false statements...

WASHINGTON - The federal grand jury investigating the leak of a CIA officer's identity met for three hours Wednesday with Special Counsel Patrick Fitzgerald and adjourned for the day without announcing any action. Fitzgerald is known to be putting the finishing touches on a two-year criminal probe that has ensnared two senior White House aides. After the grand jury left for the day, federal prosecutors conferred for about an hour in the grand jury area of the federal courthouse. There was no word on whether Fitzgerald planned to make any announcement or whether the grand jury planned to meet again.

Members of the national and international press gathered outside the federal courthouse in Harrisburg this morning for the start of a trial that could determine the fate of intelligent design in public school. The BBC, London Guardian and People magazine were among news agencies outside the courtroom, where the case of Kitzmiller v. Dover began at 9 a.m. Julian Borger, a Washington-based reporter for the Guardian, said the interest in the United Kingdom is in the American school system. He said people in the UK don't have the ability to vote on what is or isn't taught in school. "There...

Los Angeles -- A woman is suing ABC's reality show "Extreme Makeover" for unspecified damages, alleging its decision to cancel her appearance contributed to her sister's suicide. In a lawsuit filed Sept. 9 in Los Angeles Superior Court, Deleese Williams, 30, of Conroe, Texas, claimed the producers subjected her to needless humiliation and goaded her sister, Kellie McGee, into insulting her appearance. Williams says a psychologist and numerous doctors told her she needed an "eye lift, ears pulled back, chin implant and breast implants." She was also told she needed dental surgery to break and reset her jaw for a...

This is for all the naysayers on Roberts and others who like to read the misleading headlines of the AP about Roberts and his confirmation hearing so far. First off, he never said he actually respected Roe v. Wade or that it deserves respect or anything directly about Roe. What he did do was talk generally about stare decisis and the ideas of precedent. He said that any case (including Roe) that has been decided by the Supreme COurt deserves respect in that it is a precedent of the court. Being in my first year of law school, we have...

Will Legislature pick governor? It could happen By David Postman Seattle Times chief political reporter OLYMPIA — The state Supreme Court's unanimous rejection of the Democratic Party's recount lawsuit yesterday settled — for the moment, at least — the legal issues in the contentious governor's election. But it also raised the prospect of the fight moving back into the political arena, with questions about whether the eventual loser will use a vaguely worded provision in the state constitution to try to force the Legislature to overturn the result. That, according to one attorney, "is the ultimate nuclear weapon in the...

Russian special forces troops moved many of Saddam Hussein's weapons and related goods out of Iraq and into Syria in the weeks before the March 2003 U.S. military operation, The Washington Times has learned. John A. Shaw, the deputy undersecretary of defense for international technology security, said in an interview that he believes the Russian troops, working with Iraqi intelligence, "almost certainly" removed the high-explosive material that went missing from the Al-Qaqaa facility, south of Baghdad. "The Russians brought in, just before the war got started, a whole series of military units," Mr. Shaw said. "Their main job was to...

O Lord, make my enemies ridiculous.— Voltaire, 1767 Well, it did not take long for the ridiculous to find its way into print. In what is billed as the "first independent inquiry" into the events of Sept. 11, French left-wing activist Thierry Meyssan comes to the shocking conclusion that the Pentagon was not hit by American Airlines Flight 77. His book, L'Effroyable Imposture (The Frightening Fraud) is apparently a hot seller in his native land, the first 20,000 copies having been whisked off the shelves with more to follow. Meyssan, who had published his views as early as October...
