Two senior executives at the US Congress-funded Voice of America resigned this week after a controversial ally of US President Donald Trump was confirmed as the new chief executive of the agency that oversees the media outlet, as well as Radio Free Asia and Voice of Europe. In another instance of Trump appointing a political loyalist for a nonpolitical job, the conservative activist and filmmaker Michael Pack was confirmed last week as the new head of the US Agency for Global Media (USAGM), an agency independent of the US government responsible for taxpayer-funded news outlets. WASHINGTON - D.C. Police say a Washington lawyer who was killed earlier this week in Northwest was the target of the attack. Police Sergeant Brett Parson tells The Washington Post that the evidence investigators have found so far suggests that someone targeted 32-year-old Robert Wone when he was stabbed Wednesday night in the 1500 block of Swann Street. Officers found Wone, who was the general counsel for the nonprofit Radio Free Asia, suffering from multiple stab wounds from a butcher knife inside the home. No arrests have been made in the case and it remains under investigation.

FOR TWELVE DAYS FOLLOWING THE death of former Chinese leader Zhao Ziyang, China's television and radio remained silent about his passing. A handful of newspapers mentioned it, in a government-approved two-sentence statement buried on inside pages. On the day of the cremation, January 29, China Central Television finally reported that Zhao had died. The Internet and foreign broadcasts are another story. They conveyed the news of Zhao's death within hours. China-based Internet bulletin boards filled with condolences and eulogies--soon removed by vigilant censors. Despite intensified government jamming, some foreign radio broadcasts got through.Zhao's views were very much out of favor with...
