  • Seven earthquakes hit the Mid-South in the same day

MEMPHIS, Tenn. — The Mid-South was hit by seven earthquakes in just one day. The strongest earthquake – a magnitude three – was felt on Monday across parts of Tennessee, Arkansas, Missouri and Kentucky. At the University of Memphis Center for Earthquake Research and Information, Dr. Kent Moran is busy keeping a close eye on recent quake activity on Seismic Maps. “This is normal seismicity,” Dr. Moran said. “It just comes in bursts on occasion.” He’s not just looking for the Big One, but other quakes around the world and those shaking parts of the Mid-South. “We (are) here at...
  • 420 Aftershocks Continue off CA Coast In Cape Mendocino Fracture Zone of Juan de Fuca Plate after Mag 7 Quake on 12-5

Now, only 5 days after a Mag 7.0 earthquake shook the Cape Mendocino Fracture Zone offshore of the CA coast, aftershocks continue hourly. Over 420 earthquakes in this 110 km x 20 km region are already listed. More happen each hour. Why do hundreds of small earthquakes offshore of northern California matter? Nobody lives there, no businesses nor voters nor industry is destroyed. No FEMA trailers nor FEMA money is needed of the earthquake is underwater. The Cape Mendocino Fracture Zone is the southern border of three tectonic plates being pushed east underneath the US continental plate. The Gorda Plate...

The epicenter was about 42 miles west-southwest of Ferndale and 54 miles west-southwest of Eureka. The National Weather Service has issued a tsunami warning as a result of the quake. The Tsunami Warning is in effect for coastal regions from California to Oregon. Anyone near coastal waters is advised to move to high ground immediately, according to the San Jose Fire Department. Bay Area Rapid Transit announced that BART service in the Transbay Tube was halted in all directions in response to the quake.

  • Strange Seismic Activity in New Jersey Raises New Concerns for the Northeast

New Jersey’s recent earthquake indicated new seismic risks in the densely populated Northeast due to previously unknown faults. Credit: SciTechDaily.com A recent earthquake in New Jersey displayed unusual seismic activity and shaking patterns, impacting areas much farther than expected. Research indicates it happened on an unmapped fault, challenging existing models of earthquake risk in the region. On April 5th, 2024, a magnitude 4.8 earthquake struck northern New Jersey’s Tewksbury township, triggering widespread alarm. Although the region occasionally experiences small tremors, this was the largest since 1884, when an earthquake of approximately magnitude 5 struck under the seabed off Brooklyn. According...
  • New study pinpoints source of largest recorded Mediterranean earthquake in AD 365

On the morning of 21 July, AD 365, the Eastern Mediterranean was shaken by an earthquake that is generally believed to be the strongest recorded earthquake in the Mediterranean. It probably originated around Crete, Greece, and was followed by a tsunami that hit the Mediterranean coastlines causing many deaths. In Alexandria, tsunami devastation was so severe that the day of the event was commemorated as the "day of horror" for centuries after the event. The earthquake was strong enough to lift parts of Crete by several meters. This upheaval of the island left behind fossil shorelines, which Richard Ott, a scientist...

At 9PM on January 26, 1700 one of the world's largest earthquakes occurred along the west coast of North America. The undersea Cascadia thrust fault ruptured along a 680 mile length, from mid Vancouver Island to northern California in a great earthquake, producing tremendous shaking and a huge tsunami that swept across the Pacific. The Cascadia fault is the boundary between two of the Earth's tectonic plates: the smaller offshore Juan de Fuca plate that is sliding under the much larger North American plate. The earthquake also left unmistakable signatures in the geological record as the outer coastal regions subsided...
  • L.A.’s quake mystery: 2024 brings the most seismic activity in decades. Why now?

It’s not your imagination: The ground beneath Southern California has been particularly unsteady as of late, with the region experiencing more moderate-sized earthquakes this year than it has in decades. What precisely is fueling the sequence of shakers is not entirely clear, and officials warn that prior seismic activity does not necessarily mean more powerful temblors are imminent. But the series of modest shakers have many wondering what is going on.“Earthquakes pop off around the state, and it’s a little bit like popcorn that they hit — sometimes they bunch up for reasons that we don’t understand,” said Susan Hough,...

(DUVI HONIG / VINnews) — In our collective memory, Tisha B'Av has always been a solemn day, marked by the destruction of the First and Second Temples. This year, however, the day bore witness to what many of us view as a modern-day miracle—a testament to divine intervention that could not have come at a more crucial time. Join our WhatsApp group Subscribe to our Daily Roundup Email Reports confirmed a 5.4-magnitude earthquake that struck Syria and Lebanon, profoundly impacting the region. This was not just any seismic event; it served as an unanticipated yet divine act that may have...

A mega earthquake could rock America's heartland - home to at least 11 million Americans - in the next 50 years. Scientists say a little-known 150-mile-long stretch through Missouri, Arkansas, Tennessee, Kentucky and Illinois, has the conditions to generate a 6.0-plus magnitude quake. The National Guard this week in St Louis conducted earthquake preparation drills that simulated a focused response to an 8.4 magnitude earthquake

...The heart of our planet has been spinning unusually slowly for the past 14 years, new research confirms. And if this mysterious trend continues, it could potentially lengthen Earth's days — though the effects would likely be imperceptible to us.Earth's inner core is a roughly moon-size chunk of solid iron and nickel that lies more than 3,000 miles (4,800 kilometers) below our feet. It is surrounded by the outer core — a superhot layer of molten metals similar to those in the inner core — which is surrounded by a more solid sea of molten rock, known as the mantle,...

...Such anomalies are known as earthquake precursors, and although researchers are aware of them, it has been difficult to definitively identify a pattern of so-called red flags that could indicate an impending earthquake. This is because of the complexity of precursor interactions and their variability in different earthquakes and geographical regions. However, with every earthquake that researchers analyze using increasingly sophisticated satellite technology, these patterns are slowly emerging.Professor Mehdi Akhoondzadeh of the University of Tehran assessed a variety of satellite data from the run up to and aftermath of two earthquakes that occurred on 6 February 2023 near the border...

It was a terrible quake that struck near Hualien City, Taiwan, just as the workday was beginning on Wednesday. Details aren't yet complete but, so far, nine people have been reported killed, over a thousand more injured, and 152 trapped in damaged buildings, quarries, and other places. At 7.4 on Richter Scale, the Hualien shifter was three times more powerful and released 5.6 times more energy than the 1989 Loma Prieta earthquake that dropped part of San Francisco's elevated Embarcadaro freeway, killed 63 people, and injured 3,757 more. “It was pretty scary,” a visiting American told NBC News. “In all...
  • Red Spouter, Yellowstone’s Multi-Personality Thermal, Created By 1959 Earthquake

Created by a 7.3-magnitude earthquake in 1959, Yellowstone's Red Spouter is a thermal with many personalities. Depending on the season, it can be a hot spring, a boiling mudpot or it can just spew hot gas. Many of Yellowstone National Park’s thermal features are defined by their personalities. The regularity of Old Faithful, the colossal noise and steam clouds of Steamboat Geyser or the colorful palette of the Artists’ Paintpots. By that logic, the Red Spouter might be Yellowstone's most ambitious. Instead of building a reputation around a single personality, it tries to — and succeeds at — being many...
