Seven earthquakes hit the Mid-South in the same day

MEMPHIS, Tenn. — The Mid-South was hit by seven earthquakes in just one day.

The strongest earthquake – a magnitude three – was felt on Monday across parts of Tennessee, Arkansas, Missouri and Kentucky.

At the University of Memphis Center for Earthquake Research and Information, Dr. Kent Moran is busy keeping a close eye on recent quake activity on Seismic Maps.

“This is normal seismicity,” Dr. Moran said. “It just comes in bursts on occasion.”

He’s not just looking for the Big One, but other quakes around the world and those shaking parts of the Mid-South.

“We (are) here at the Earthquake Center to help educate the public, educate the emergency services (on how) to be prepared for such events big or small,” Dr. Moran said.

Normal he says, hmmm. Few weeks ago it was New Jersey, then the large ones off the west coast, now a swarm along an overdue fault line?

Of course on has to consider the flooding from Helene saturated the ground and ground waters just east of there too. Now freezing cold. So surface ground is freezing and thawing as well.

We shall see if there has been enough of a disturbance along the Madrid and its borders to trigger it.

Yep, and I think I live smack dab on the epicenter in a 100-year-old, 3-story brick house with two-brick-thick walls. If that quake kicks off I'll unfortunately be the first to go!

That’s OK. FEMA-DOE (US Nuclear Emergency Response Center) build the “East Coast” Emergency storage deport in Tennessee. In Memphis. Near the Mississippi River bridges and interstate highway overpasses and connections that will likely be destroyed by the next New Madrid Fault earthquake.

These are the warehouses that are intended to support the region’s nuclear plants who are hit by a natural disaster that damages their local backup resources.

Years ago, I took FEMA damage assessment training in prep for the Memphis earth quake destruction. FEMA came east to get damage assessors because those further west simply might not be able to get to the damaged areas.

So far, no call yet. (good, very good. Im out of the damage assessment business )

Memphis (my original hometown) is about 40 miles from the New Madrid Seismic Zone (NMSZ) fault line. The NMSZ is the most active seismic zone east of the Rocky Mountains and experiences hundreds of small earthquakes each year, but most are too small to feel.

Before Memphis was a town, there was a major series of earthquakes in 1811–1812 called the “New Madrid earthquakes.” These earthquakes were quite severe and caused the Mississippi River to run backward.

Should the New Madrid fault wake up Saint Louis would be gone and so would be quite a few others. Somewhere I read that the periodicity for this quake is around two hundred years and we are already past this point.
