Government warns of "catastrophic" U.S. quake (FEMA & the New Madrid Seismic Zone)

KANSAS CITY, Missouri (Reuters) – People in a vast seismic zone in the southern and midwestern United States would face catastrophic damage if a major earthquake struck there and should ensure that builders keep that risk in mind, a government report said on Thursday.

The Federal Emergency Management Agency said if earthquakes strike in what geologists define as the New Madrid Seismic Zone, they would cause "the highest economic losses due to a natural disaster in the United States."

FEMA predicted a large earthquake would cause "widespread and catastrophic physical damage" across Alabama, Arkansas, Illinois, Indiana, Kentucky, Mississippi, Missouri and Tennessee -- home to some 44 million people.

Tennessee is likely to be hardest hit, according to the study that sought to gauge the impact of a 7.7 magnitude earthquake in order to guide the government's response.

In Tennessee alone, it forecast hundreds of collapsed bridges, tens of thousands of severely damaged buildings and a half a million households without water.

Transportation systems and hospitals would be wrecked, and police and fire departments impaired, the study said.

The zone, named for the town of New Madrid in Missouri's southeast corner, is subject to frequent mild earthquakes.

The big one has been predicted on the New Madrid fault for a long time. I don’t doubt it’s coming, though.

LOL! A little too late, guys. The builders can keep it in mind when they see pretty much everything in the center of the country get leveled into rubble.

FEMA wants people to be prepared for a catastrophe.

It’s politically correct to talk about earthquakes and global warming. Not PC to talk about a terrorist attack.

BTW, is there any more news about the rumor that retired military are being called up?

Of the five most powerful earthquakes to strike the United States, none of them occurred in California (think New Madrid, Charleston, Good Friday, etc.)

Gosh government, how many millions did we spend to have you tell me in southern Calif I live in an earthquake zone and you will be of no help to me in a big one.

Stupid people -work in government.

Remember half of every graduating class, graduates at the bottom and gets government jobs.

Another liberal attempt to fool the San Andreas fault from destroying San Fran.

Libs think they can control the temperature of a planet, why wouldn’t they think they can control Earthquakes

“Government warns of “catastrophic” U.S. quake (FEMA & the New Madrid Seismic Zone)”

That headline should be nominated for the category of “most misleading headline in 2008”. Maybe it is just me, but when I read that headline I thought the government was warning us of a catastrophic quake....that was an imminent prediction, not the same old warning we’ve known for years and years. LOL

What the article says is, “..... if a major earthquake struck there...”; “if earthquakes strike in what geologists define as the New Madrid Seismic Zone...”.

I think it is wise for people in those areas to make sure they are taking into account the POSSIBILITY of a major quake, for I have no doubt that sometime, somewhere down there, there will be a catastrophic earthquake. We had our 7.9 a few years ago but I still check the AK earthquake website every day to see if the bumps I thought I felt were in fact earthquake bumps.

Now that America has been deceived into voting for Oboma, I doubt God has his protective hand any where near us. On the contrary, after Hillary gets Israel to give up Jerusalem, the U.S. is toast.
