Kennedy said he had taken sleep medication and a prescription anti-nausea drug that can cause drowsiness. Kennedy, D-R.I., addressed the issue after a spate of news reports. His initial statement said: "I consumed no alcohol prior to the incident."'Later, however, he issued a longer statement saying the attending physician for Congress had prescribed Phenergan on Tuesday to treat Kennedy's gastroenteritis.Kennedy said he returned to his Capitol Hill home on Wednesday evening after a final series of votes...

A male member of the Kennedy family has been involved in an automobile accident that was totally his fault. Stop me if you’ve heard this one before. Fortunately, this time no one suffocated in a ’67 Oldsmobile Delmont at the bottom of a tidal pond. Come on down, Patches Kennedy, Boy Congressman from Rhode Island. And what’s up with Patches this spring? First he takes a hammer to the mouth in Pawtucket, and now he’s driving around Rhode Island like an idiot, or should I say, a Kennedy? Does Patches have some issues - I mean, other than the ones...

Some computer administrators are reporting issues with Microsoft's latest security update which is designed to fix a critical flaw in Windows. The SANS Internet Storm Centre warned that in some cases security update MS05-051 will cause a host of problems, including blocking access to the Microsoft update website, displaying a blank log-in screen without icons, and issues with Office applications.  A Microsoft spokeswoman confirmed the glitch to vnunet.com, explaining that the problems are "isolated deployment issues" and that the company is working with the affected users to resolve the issue. Microsoft issued the security bulletin and patch on 11 October....

As a follow-up to yesterday's post about the Zobot worm, eWeek is reporting that multiple exploits are circulating for the vulnerability outlined in bulletin MS05-039. Researchers at eEye Digital Security also raised the alarm after testing the published exploits. "Upon discovering two instances of exploit code online, [we] conducted thorough testing to confirm that both present a legitimate threat to Windows 2000 systems (completely patched SP 4 with all hotfixes). One exploit, released by an anonymous author, will bind a command prompt to TCP port 8721," the company warned. Get patched folks! The entire article can be viewed here

Patrick Kennedy Will Not Run for Senate By LOLITA C. BALDOR, Associated Press Writer WASHINGTON - Rep. Patrick Kennedy (news, bio, voting record), D-R.I., on Wednesday ruled out a run for the Senate in 2006, saying he could better serve his constituents by staying in the House and serving on the Appropriations Committee. Kennedy has been in Boston caring for his mother, Joan Kennedy, who was hospitalized with a concussion and a broken shoulder after a passer-by found her lying in a street Tuesday. In a statement, Kennedy did not cite family responsibilities as a reason for his decision, but...

Security flaws affect Windows, Internet Explorer, others Feb. 8, 2005 SEATTLE - Microsoft Corp. released eight security fixes Tuesday that carry its highest threat rating and urged computer users to install them quickly because all the vulnerabilities they address could let attackers take complete control of systems. Seven of the security vulnerabilities Microsoft marked "critical" affect the Windows operating system and related software, including the Internet Explorer browser, media player and instant messaging program. The eighth is with the Redmond software maker's Office XP business software. The patches can be downloaded at....

I need help with a Windows XP Professional installation. A relative of mine gave me an unused (e.g., unactivated) fully-legal copy of Windows XP Professional (Full Install version) that is still on Service Pack 1, and they also gave me the full Network Install WinXP Service Pack 2 install file (all 275 MB of it!). Given that Windows XP SP2 likely won't allow the installation of all security patches over a copy of Windows XP Professional that has not be activated, can anyone here tell me what are the most critical patch files I should install first so I can...

Microsoft released the long-anticipated Windows XP Service Pack 2 (SP2) to manufacturing mid-day Friday, just two days after unknown delays temporarily stumped its wrap. Although Microsoft's signed off on SP2 -- a major update to Windows XP that devotes considerable effort toward tightening up the operating system against security threats -- it's not yet offering the upgrade to end users. SP2 will post for downloading next week, said Microsoft, but it's urging users to not flood the Windows Update servers by retrieving the approximately 80MB file on their own. Instead, the Redmond, Wash.-based developer is trying to convince users...

NASA: Astronauts Won't Have Patches for Holes Bigger Than 4 Inches When Flights Resume Marcia Dunn/Associated Press Jun 18, 2004 CAPE CANAVERAL, Fla. (AP) - When space shuttle flights resume, the astronauts will have putty and other filler to repair cracks and small gashes in the wings, but they will not be able to patch a hole as big as the one that doomed Columbia, NASA said Friday. Michael Kostelnik, deputy associate administrator, said it is taking longer than expected to come up with a technique for wrapping a crater as big as the one gouged in Columbia's wing by...

I am working with a client that has a LAN and high speed Internet connection in its central office. The client has several nearby "satellite" locations, each with one or two PCs, with only dialup Internet access. I am facing a challenge in keeping the remote PCs current with Windows updates. Trying to download them over a dialup connection will take HOURS. Here's what I would like to do instead: - At each PC, connect to Microsoft via dialup for a scan of needed updates - Record the list of updates - At central office, do download of updates and...

A "good" Internet worm and a new malicious mass-mailing computer virus are creating an enormous amount of network traffic, slowing some corporate systems, security experts said Tuesday. The Internet worm--called MSBlast.D, W32.Welchia or W32/Nachi--started compromising computers Monday and has overwhelmed some corporate networks with its aggressive scans for vulnerable hosts. Meanwhile, a new variant of the mass-mailing Sobig virus, called W32/SoBig.F, took off on Tuesday, swamping many companies' mail servers. The double whammy caused problems on some corporate networks but not for the Internet at large. SoBig.F disrupted e-mail systems at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, while the MSBlast variant,...

COMMENTARY--Yep, it's Windows vs Linux time again. as usual, the facts go out the window in a points-scoring battle that completely ignores the important issues. At the annual Tech Ed conference in mid-August, Microsoft's chief security strategist Scott Charney said "Half of all crashes in Windows are caused not by Microsoft code, but third-party code". Why would he say that? For about a year, Microsoft has been implementing its Trustworthy Computing initiative, and has gone to great effort to improve its practices and get better security and reliability in its products. Being Microsoft, a lot of the work has gone...

A new worm takes a different twist by trying to repair systems infected by Blaster and patch the vulnerability it exploits, antivirus vendors said Monday. The worm, called Nachi or MSBlast.D, tries to delete Blaster from some infected systems and install patches, according to Trend Micro. Last week's Blaster worm, also called MSBlast and Lovsan, infected hundreds of thousands of systems by exploiting a Remote Procedure Call (RPC) flaw in Microsoft Windows. Nachi exploits the same flaw but can delete the MSBlast.exe file left by Blaster on machines running Windows 2000 and Windows XP and download Microsoft patches to fix...

THIS JUST IN... • As sometimes happens with Rep. Patrick Kennedy (D-R.I.), he let his mouth race ahead of his brain Wednesday night at a gathering of Young Democrats at the Washington nightspot Acropolis. After presidential candidate Howard Dean spoke, Kennedy delivered an impassioned peroration against President Bush's tax cut. We hear that Kennedy told the crowd: "I don't need Bush's tax cut. I have never worked a [bleeping] day in my life." With that he got the audience's attention -- the dropping-jaws kind.
