WASHINGTON (AP) -- House Republicans are spending heavily on television advertising for veteran Rep. George Gekas's re-election bid, reflecting concern that the 72-year-old Pennsylvanian is the most vulnerable GOP incumbent at this stage of the campaign.

Gekas faces a challenge from Democratic Rep. Tim Holden, 45, in the Harrisburg area, one of four congressional races where redistricting has pitted current lawmakers against each other for the fall campaign.

Fisher, Rendell preparing for tight race Sunday, September 01, 2002 BY PETER L. DeCOURSEY Of The Patriot-News After spending the summer studying and preparing, the four candidates for governor face an autumn of tests and a Nov. 5 final exam. They'll endure 18-hour days when they'll be quizzed by voters, reporters and interest groups. During at least a dozen joint forums and debates all over the state, they'll face each other. Their wallets and supporters will be tested severely. After a $33 million Democratic primary, which broke the state record for election spending, the candidates expect to combine to double...

PA Status Quo. In a odd reversal, a three-judge federal panel ruled last week that the Pennsylvania Congressional map drawn by the Republican-controlled legislature will be in place for the 2002 election and that the May 21 primary will not be moved. Two weeks ago the same panel ruled by a 2-1 margin that the map allowed for too large a population deviation between the largest district in the state and the smallest. It threw the map back to the state legislature, which quickly tweaked the map to adjust the population deviation and approved a slightly-amended version. In their latest...

The hottest congressional race in America is shaping up in Pennsylvania's Eighth Congressional District. Tom Lingenfelter, a Bucks County businessman and historian, is challenging incumbent Jim Greenwood in the May 21 Republican primary. Greenwood, a self-proclaimed moderate (i.e. liberal) frequently referred to as a donkey in an elephant suit is seeking his sixth term in office. Greenwood is widely known for his staunch support of abortion and gun control. Lingenfelter, Pro-Life and Pro-Constitution, gained first place on the Republican primary's balloting position after more than twice the required number of registered Republicans signed his nomination petition. The GOP primary will...
