Ranking talk show hosts using differing methods, two lists are making big waves today. Al Franken can't possibly be happy with the just-released 2005 Lycos Top Radio Hosts list, where he fell all the way out of the top 20, after ranking 10th in 2004. Each year, Lycos ranks radio personalities based on Internet search enquiries. While that's certainly a novel approach to ranking popularity, it probably doesn't tell the whole story. Oddly, while Franken vanished, Air America co-conspirator Janeane Garofalo made this year's list, in 12th place.

The move was prompted by efforts on the part of the Muslim community to include a day off for Eid Al-Fitr, which marks the end of Ramadan. Students are still permitted to take days off for religious holidays. The school board decision will be revisited next year and could be amended. Given Air America Radio's sleaze, scandals, disarray and overspending, who would be interested in working there? After all, constant paycheck worries must quickly get old. Sure enough, though, the liberal radio network has found their new executive vice president for syndication from an even smaller, less stable "progressive" outfit: Democracy Radio. Former CEO Tom Athans, husband of US Senator Debbie Stabenow (D-MI), has joined the sinking ship. Beats doing nothing, one supposes.

On The Oreilly Factor last night, in Bill’s Talking Points Memo, he alluded to the left-wing and right-wing ideologues and what they are saying about the Lewis Libby indictment. Sure, he has a book to sell and a radio show to promote, but Al Franken had more urgent reasons to bring his live broadcast to the Book Revue in Huntington Friday. Namely: investigating where on Long Island arch-nemesis Bill O'Reilly grew up. Were O'Reilly's roots in blue-collar Levittown as the Fox television star insists? You can now open a business in the state of Oregon that includes live sex acts as part of your inventory. This afternoon I listened to a tape of a conversation between Bill O'Reilly and Charles Rangel. In the interview Rangel hit the nail on the head when he said that poverty, not racism was to blame for the debacle in New Orleans. Bill O’Reilly is someone I would like to like. He makes sense from time to time. But his bombast and dogmatism, unrelieved by humor (unlike Rush Limbaugh who is genuinely funny) usually makes me turn the station shortly after he comes on. Today he got ridiculous. O’Reilly has been pounding the theme that FEMA failed spectacularly during the Katrina hurricane and its aftermath. Saunders: Bill O'Reilly may be the king of cable television, but he doesn't have a court of loyal listeners on Denver radio. His weekday talk show on KHOW-AM (630) will soon be replaced by one hosted by Glenn Beck, another syndicated personality who'll take over the noon-3 p.m. time period.
