  • FRANKENFALL-- Al Off List, Limbaugh Syndicator Questions Talkers Survey

Ranking talk show hosts using differing methods, two lists are making big waves today. Al Franken can't possibly be happy with the just-released 2005 Lycos Top Radio Hosts list, where he fell all the way out of the top 20, after ranking 10th in 2004. Each year, Lycos ranks radio personalities based on Internet search enquiries. While that's certainly a novel approach to ranking popularity, it probably doesn't tell the whole story. Oddly, while Franken vanished, Air America co-conspirator Janeane Garofalo made this year's list, in 12th place.

The move was prompted by efforts on the part of the Muslim community to include a day off for Eid Al-Fitr, which marks the end of Ramadan. Students are still permitted to take days off for religious holidays. The school board decision will be revisited next year and could be amended. Still, the intersection of religion and public schools was irresistibly tailor-made for O'Reilly, to whom a cell phone is an X-rated sex toy. Only Faliero had voted against eliminating the days off. But when O'Reilly's gofers called to inquire whether she'd appear on a show with a man whose...

Given Air America Radio's sleaze, scandals, disarray and overspending, who would be interested in working there? After all, constant paycheck worries must quickly get old. Sure enough, though, the liberal radio network has found their new executive vice president for syndication from an even smaller, less stable "progressive" outfit: Democracy Radio. Former CEO Tom Athans, husband of US Senator Debbie Stabenow (D-MI), has joined the sinking ship. Beats doing nothing, one supposes.

On The Oreilly Factor last night, in Bill’s Talking Points Memo, he alluded to the left-wing and right-wing ideologues and what they are saying about the Lewis Libby indictment. He began with an example of the right-wing by playing a clip of Rush Limbaugh. The clip (If anyone is a member of Rush 24/7, could you link to Fridays radio show?) he played was of Rush railing about the mainstream media’s scandalous anticipatory coverage of the Leakgate investigation. In that clip, he was implying that the mainstream media are trying to damage the Bush administration and bring down an American...

Sure, he has a book to sell and a radio show to promote, but Al Franken had more urgent reasons to bring his live broadcast to the Book Revue in Huntington Friday. Namely: investigating where on Long Island arch-nemesis Bill O'Reilly grew up. Were O'Reilly's roots in blue-collar Levittown as the Fox television star insists? Or was he a product of the comparatively ritzy Westbury? "What is this hall of mirrors known as O'Reilly's childhood?" Franken purred into his microphone, beginning his radio program before a crowd of 200 listeners. There was, of course, other news to be lampooned. Moments...

THE DANGER OF RUNNING VICARIOUSLY: Bill O'Reilly chews up and spits out the hillary clinton candidacy by Mia T, 10.27.05   (viewing movie requires Flash Player 7, available HERE) the principal being more worthless even than its phantom proxy, both alike unsubstantial, and the former shapeless to boot --Samuel Taylor Coleridge   or the most part, missus clinton operates in absentia, by proxy. You rarely see her. You almost never hear her. (Think of it as the hillary! 2000 'listening tour' extended ad nauseam.) And in those rare instances where she does actually speak, the 'event' is always prearranged,...

Here's a story the print press doesn't really want to report - many American newspapers are in big trouble. Earnings at The New York Times Company, for example, are down more than 50% this quarter, the Los Angeles Times has changed its editor and editorial director in the face of steep circulation declines, and scores of other papers are having major problems convincing consumers to buy their product. There are a number of reasons for the depressing situation, pardon the pun. The internet provides news efficiently, the decline of public education means fewer Americans care about what's going on, and...
  • Bill O'Reilly on Today Show Casts a Pox on Both Houses - Buzz Word: "Ideologue"

Is it shtick or sincerity? Bill O'Reilly loves to portray himself as a down-the-middle straightshooter, and there he was this morning on the Today show in full pox-on-both-their-houses mode. Katie Couric began the interview by asking his take on the Plame affair: O'Reilly: "Outside the Beltway and New York this story is non-existent. If Libby or Rove get indicted it becomes an enormous story." Exclaimed a jocular O'Reilly: " All I want is for Russert to be arrested - can we have that; can we get him arrested in chains?" O'Reilly seemed ready to move on, but Katie jumped on...

Now it's so bad that I spend an enormous amount of money protecting myself against evil," declares Fox News Channel's Bill O'Reilly, who says his enemies have become so vicious that he's mulling retiring from his top-rated TV show. He has also hired bodyguards to protect himself. The liberal media establishment is mostly behind the rising tide of hatred because "it can't marginalize me," O'Reilly told Newsday's Verne Gay in a rare interview published Tuesday. Gay writes: "Almost exactly a year since he settled a sexual harassment lawsuit with former Fox News producer Andrea Mackris, the embattled life of O'Reilly...

...Gauging the animus against O'Reilly has always been a rough art, but by his own estimation "it's gotten worse. Now it's so bad that I spend an enormous amount of money protecting myself against evil."...the embattled life of O'Reilly has become an increasingly strange and scary one. As O'Reilly puts it, here are the facts: There are death threats. He has to hire bodyguards. He can't check into hotels with his family. People on the street with cell phones are stealth paparazzi, capable of snagging a picture one minute, then posting it on the Web the next. He adds that...

You can now open a business in the state of Oregon that includes live sex acts as part of your inventory. You might call it "Vinny's Deli and Sex Act Cabaret," or "Miss Sally's Spa and Kama Sutra Emporium." That's because the Oregon Supreme Court recently ruled 5 to 1 that telling a business it cannot have a live sexual exposition on its premises is a violation of freedom of expression under the Oregon Constitution.

Many conservative pundits don't like Harriet because she's not "right" enough. And some lefties believe she's not qualified to serve her country because she's a practicing Christian. Writing in the secular temple that is The New York Times, columnist Maureen Dowd states: "(President Bush) is asking for a triple leap of faith. He has faith in Ms. Miers as his lawyer and as a woman who shares his faith. And we're expected to have faith in his faith and her faith that could change the balance of the court and affect women's rights for the next generation." ...Ms. Dowd is...

This afternoon I listened to a tape of a conversation between Bill O'Reilly and Charles Rangel. In the interview Rangel hit the nail on the head when he said that poverty, not racism was to blame for the debacle in New Orleans. As surprised as I was at Rangel's assessment of the situation, he righted his course and attacked the President for failing to 'rescue' the residents of the Big Easy. Charles said what many of us have known for a long time. Its not the color of your skin, but the content of your character which will either make...

Bill O’Reilly is someone I would like to like. He makes sense from time to time. But his bombast and dogmatism, unrelieved by humor (unlike Rush Limbaugh who is genuinely funny) usually makes me turn the station shortly after he comes on. Today he got ridiculous. O’Reilly has been pounding the theme that FEMA failed spectacularly during the Katrina hurricane and its aftermath. Despite the fact that earlier reports of mass deaths (over 10,000 were initially reported), mass rapes, mass murders and even cannibalism have been widely debunked, he is welded to this position. At the beginning of today’s radio...

Saunders: Bill O'Reilly may be the king of cable television, but he doesn't have a court of loyal listeners on Denver radio. His weekday talk show on KHOW-AM (630) will soon be replaced by one hosted by Glenn Beck, another syndicated personality who'll take over the noon-3 p.m. time period. Under the contract, Clear Channel, operators of KHOW, must give syndicators of O'Reilly's series time to shop his show around in the Denver radio market before he's dropped from the station.
