This afternoon I listened to a tape of a conversation between Bill O'Reilly and Charles Rangel. In the interview Rangel hit the nail on the head when he said that poverty, not racism was to blame for the debacle in New Orleans. As surprised as I was at Rangel's assessment of the situation, he righted his course and attacked the President for failing to 'rescue' the residents of the Big Easy.
Charles said what many of us have known for a long time. Its not the color of your skin, but the content of your character which will either make you a part of the American Dream or a slave to the welfare state. I am not so blind to believe that racism, sexism, or any 'ism' doesn't exist in the South, but overcoming obstacles is a hell of a lot better than waiting for Uncle Sam to throw you a few scraps.
