Right after I watched the trailer for the Amazon Studios film Brittany Runs a Marathon, I thought about the time I had forgotten to buy energy chews right before a 10-mile marathon training run. I walked to the grocery store in my running clothes—spandex leggings, a technical shirt with the name of my local running club on it, and New Balance 860s. I put two packets of chews on the conveyor and started to pull some money out of my belt pack when the cashier said, “These are really good.” I told him that it took me a while to...

More obesity among black men who attend church often Black men who attend church almost daily are nearly three times more likely to have obesity than those who never (or very rarely) attend, a new study shows. Moreover, the study found health differences across denominations: Among black Americans, Catholics and Presbyterians had lower odds of diabetes than Baptists. The obesity epidemic, like many deleterious outcomes in America, has disproportionately affected the black population, researchers say. While nearly one-third of all men and women have obesity, the rate jumps to nearly one-half (48.4%) among African Americans, putting them at greater risk...

They found that healthy mice have plenty of bacteria from a genus called Clostridia, but few from Desulfovibrio, and that their guts let most fat pass right through. Those with an altered immune system had fewer Clostridia and more Desulfovibrio, and this microbial balance helped the gut absorb more fats from food. These mice gained more weight and exhibited signs of type 2 diabetes. “Whether this applies in humans, we don't know,” Hooper says, “but this is a tantalizing clue.” The role of the immune system in the gut is to maintain balance. Changes to the body’s defenses, which can happen as a result of...

Obese people eat more food because it simply tastes better, a new study has found. Researchers at the University of Iowa gave chocolate to a group of obese and non-obese women and found that as the obese group kept eating the food continued to taste almost as good to them as the first bite. The findings suggest that understanding taste perceptions may be crucial to preventing obesity when combined with targeting nutritional awareness. “If people with obesity have different taste perceptions than nonobese people, it could lead to better understanding of obesity,” lead investigator Linnea Polgreen noted, according to News...

Being obese is linked to a significantly higher chance of serious disease and early death than being a healthy weight, research on more than 2.8 million adults suggests. The chance of suffering serious illness goes up with increasing weight gain, experts analysing health, death and sickness data from UK adults found. How much does the risk increase as your BMI rises? Presented at the European Congress on Obesity (ECO) in Glasgow, the study found that people with a body mass index (BMI) of 30 to 35 were at 70% higher risk of developing heart failure than their healthy weight peers....

Gillette is making waves with a photo it tweeted of an obese woman posing on a beach in a bikini, with her curves and cellulite on full display. The razor maker last week posted the image of Anna O'Brien, a plus-size fashion, fitness and lifestyle blogger, under its @GilletteVenus handle, captioning it, "Go out there and slay the day." Some Twitter users said the ad glamorizies obesity and that Gillette is "irresponsibly" promoting an unhealthy lifestyle for profit. "This woman will die of heat disease before @potus completes his second term. I hope she's just as happy and carefree for...

Six states and the District of Columbia are suing the Trump Administration for its reversal of the Obama-era rules on school lunches. New York Attorney General Letitia James mocked “the scientifically unsound argument that the rules imposed by the prior administration were a failure because so much of the food ended up tossed out by the students.” “Whether the students eat the food is not the government’s responsibility,” James asserted. “This is still a free country. We can lead each student to a nutritionally balanced meal, but we can’t make him eat it. Even if the food is rejected and...

Lesbian and bisexual women are at increased risk of being overweight or obese compared to heterosexual women, according to new research from the University of East Anglia and UCL. Gay men however are less likely to be overweight than their straight counterparts, and more at risk of being underweight. The study, published today in the Journal of Public Health, is the first to investigate the relationship between sexual orientation and body mass index (BMI) using population data in the UK. The findings support the argument that sexual identity should be considered as a social determinant of health. The research team...

The study's 272 participants were randomly divided into two groups. People in one group, known as the intervention group, were advised to weigh themselves at least twice a week during the holidays and to record and reflect on their weight. This group also received 10 tips for managing weight; these suggestions included being careful with portion sizes, limiting alcohol and sugary drinks, and engaging in regular physical activity. This group also received a list showing how much exercise you'd need to burn off popular holiday foods and drinks. For example, it would take 16 minutes of running to burn off...

Get out of jail free: because you're too fat. A 600-pound Florida man, arrested for scamming restaurants in 2007, was offered a plea deal when prosecutors discovered it was too expensive to incarcerate him, according to the Orlando Sentinel. George Jolicoeur, 38, is infamous for ordering food and then complaining about the quality and refusing to pay after he eats it. The obese thief once devoured five milk shakes before finding a hair in the shake and refusing to pay. Jolicoeur was arrested in 2007 after downing nearly $50 of beef jerky from a 7-Eleven, then claiming the last few...

Horrors! Bad food. That kids like. Including all that highly recommended carby stuff still sitting there at the bottom of the government's food pyramid. The press is yelling 'fat people' and all that, imagining that lefty-union-controlled school authorities around the country are just itching to put refined flour and white sugar in front of the young 'uns, alongside chocolate milk. Tortillas, maybe, given the high numbers of Mexican kids (but don't dare serve them to a Honduran!), yet the reality is, the Trump administration is giving school districts some school choice in how to handle the food situation for the...

Adverts for junk food are to be banned on the entire Transport for London (TfL) network to help tackle childhood obesity, Sadiq Khan has announced. From February, promotions for unhealthy food and soft drinks will be stripped from trains, buses, boats and trams across the capital. The decision covers the likes of fizzy drinks, chocolate bars, and cheeseburgers, meaning big brands like McDonald's and Cadbury will only be able to feature healthier products on any adverts they want to run. Mr Khan, London's mayor, said a public consultation launched in May had found "overwhelming support" for a ban, which will...

A size 28 lingerie model from New York is embracing her fuller figure after receiving nasty jibes from internet trolls. Leah Stanley, 29, started her Instagram account, that now has over 92,000 followers, in a bid to encourage other women to enjoy their curves after she grew up without a strong plus-sized influence. 'I've received countless comments and messages regarding my health, lifestyle and life overall. I've been told I should kill myself, that I should learn to stop eating or that I'm unhealthy and only promoting an unhealthy lifestyle,' says Leah.

It's been a bad few weeks for memes. In mid-September the European Parliament passed a new copyright law that some have dubbed a "meme ban." Then Sweden's advertising watchdog ruled that the popular "distracted boyfriend" meme is sexist. Now, academics have told British lawmakers that internet memes may be contributing to the UK obesity crisis and doing harm to teenagers on a significant scale. Memes carry dangerous health-related messages and make light of unhealthy eating habits, researchers from Loughborough University wrote in a letter sent to a British parliamentary committee. "A substantial number of individuals on Twitter share health-related Internet...

Pizzas must shrink or lose their toppings under Government plans to cap the calories in thousands of meals sold in restaurants and supermarkets. Pies, ready meals and sandwiches will also be subject to the new proposed calorie limits, in a desperate bid to tackle Britain’s obesity crisis. Under the draft proposals, a standard pizza for one should contain no more than 928 calories - far less than many sold by takeaways, restaurants and shops. And the recommendations suggest that a savoury pie should contain no more than 695 calories. Public Health England (PHE) said “drastic” measures were needed to combat Britain’s...
