Being obese is linked to a significantly higher chance of serious disease and early death than being a healthy weight, research on more than 2.8 million adults suggests. The chance of suffering serious illness goes up with increasing weight gain, experts analysing health, death and sickness data from UK adults found. How much does the risk increase as your BMI rises? Presented at the European Congress on Obesity (ECO) in Glasgow, the study found that people with a body mass index (BMI) of 30 to 35 were at 70% higher risk of developing heart failure than their healthy weight peers. Even a BMI of 25 to 30 increased the risk by 20%, while a BMI of 35 to 40 more than doubled the risk and a BMI of 40 to 45 almost quadrupled the risk compared to people of a normal weight. The study also found that compared with normal weight individuals, a BMI of 25 to 30 increased the risk of Type 2 diabetes and sleep apnoea by more than double, while a person with a BMI of 30 to 35 was more than five times as likely to develop Type 2 diabetes and almost six times as likely to develop sleep apnoea. his BMI was also linked to a 50% higher risk of dying prematurely from any cause compared to people of a normal weight. Credit: PA For those with a BMI of 35 to 40, the risk of Type 2 diabetes was almost nine times higher, and 12 times higher for sleep apnoea. People with severe obesity (BMI of 40 to 45) were 12 times more likely to develop Type 2 diabetes and had a risk of sleep apnoea that was 22 times greater.

Is this not the most obvious thing you ever heard? Down and dirty, if you are a fatty you have a really high chance of having health problems. No kidding....
I need to get a government grant to study the theory that water is wet.
Yes, I had the same reaction to this that you had. Next they are going to say that having unprotected sex with multiple partners that are also meth heads will increase your risk of acquiring an STD. But only after a lengthy study.
I think that the point is that it isn’t necessary to be morbidly obese to have your excess weight impact your health. Even 20 or 30 pounds above your ideal weight can be a problem.
For many people BMI is not a reliable indicator of obesity. It is very misleading for those with a lot of lean muscle mass. It will tell you that a heavily muscled athlete with 10% body fat is “obese” or “grossly overweight”.
BMI is a garbage metric.
I’m BMI 25, but I lift weights, sprint, and play sports...
That’s a lot of words for something that could have easily (and much more clearly) been put into a chart.
OK, you take that one. I'm going after a grant to study why tornedos attack mobile home parks.
Going to Coachella and having random sexual encounters with hip hop and EDM skanks will increase your risk of herpes.
I wonder how much a “scientist” could get to do a study for that.
And Churchill lived to 90. He was obese, an alcoholic and smoked more cigars than we could care to think about. Using outliers to prove what is a known fact (obese people have more health problems and don’t live as long) is not good science.
BMI is based on the quack science of somatotyping.
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Somatotype_and_constitutional_psychology
In his 1954 book, Atlas of Men, Sheldon categorized all possible body types according to a scale ranging from 1 to 7 for each of the three “somatotypes”, where the pure “endomorph” is 711, the pure “mesomorph” 171 and the pure “ectomorph” scores 117.[7][8][9] From type number, an individual’s mental characteristics could supposedly be predicted.
Sheldon’s “somatotypes” and their associated physical and psychological traits were characterized as follows:[3][9]
Comparison of body types
Ectomorphic: characterized as skinny, thin, slender, slim, lithe, lanky, neotenous, flat-chested, lightly muscled, weak, fragile, delicate, and usually tall; described as intelligent, contemplative, melancholic, industrious, effeminate, submissive, inferior, perfectionist, quirky, idiosyncratic, sensitive to pain, soft, gentle, loving, helpful, placatory, calm, peaceful, vulnerable, humble, self-deprecatory, socially awkward, solitary, secretive, concealing, self-conscious, introverted, shy, reserved, defensive, uncomfortable, tense, and anxious.[3][7][9][10]
Mesomorphic: characterized as hard, rugged, triangular, muscular, thick-skinned, and with good posture; described as athletic, eager, adventurous, willing to take risks, competitive, extroverted, aggressive, masculine, macho, authoritative, strong, assertive, direct, forthright, blustering, dominant, tough, strict, fortunate, vigorous, energetic, determined, courageous, and ambitious.[3][7][9]
Endomorphic: characterized as fat, round, heavy, usually short, and having difficulty losing weight; described as open, outgoing, sociable, amiable, friendly, affectionate, accepting, happy, pleased, satisfied, laid-back, easily complacent, lazy, ungenerous, selfish, greedy, well-endowed, and slow to react.[3][7][9]
I agree. I am a swimmer and have a BMI of 24 which is just under the level of being overweight. If I got down to 20 I would look like a skeleton.
It is just a finger in the wind measurement.
BMI is a good metric when used as it was intended, which is to track changes in body composition in populations over time. It was never meant to say anything meaningful about individuals. It’s got to be one of the most abused statistical metrics ever.
I say that as one who has struggled with weight my entire adult life. I can tell when I need to lose some weight.
I also see health insurance premiums based on how overweight you are. Similar to what car insurance companies do with drivers. If you have a lot of car accidents, you are going to pay more car insurance. If you have a clean driving record, you will pay less than the average guy.
It will soon be the same with health care insurance.
Expect screams of “Fat Shaming!!!” from the Left....
My health club is filled with obese people walking on the treadmill for 5 minutes slowly and then leaving. Or lifting light weights for a few and then hitting the door.
For any folks around here that want to get rid of their extra weight, check out the videos on fasting and weight loss at youtube. Exercise (cardio and weight lifting) is important, but fasting (even intermittent fasting) helps get the fat off. Beats the hell out of counting calories (which doesn't actually work in the long term).
