Right after I watched the trailer for the Amazon Studios film Brittany Runs a Marathon, I thought about the time I had forgotten to buy energy chews right before a 10-mile marathon training run. I walked to the grocery store in my running clothes—spandex leggings, a technical shirt with the name of my local running club on it, and New Balance 860s.
I put two packets of chews on the conveyor and started to pull some money out of my belt pack when the cashier said, “These are really good.” I told him that it took me a while to find a flavor that I liked, but that I prefer chews over gels any day. “Oh,” he said, cocking his head to the side. “Are you a runner?”
I get that a lot.
I’ve built up quite a collection of anecdotes about people who don’t believe I’m a runner at all, let alone a marathoner. Highlights include the clerk at the running store who assumed I was there to buy a gift, the trainer at my gym who stoically passed all the other people on treadmills but gave me a thumbs up, and the volunteer at packet pickup who gave me detailed instructions on how to pin my bib.
As annoying as these interactions are, I can’t really blame anyone for the oversight. Movies like Brittany Runs a Marathon keep telling the same story about what it’s like to be a fat runner: temporary.

I have known some stocky runners. They are a distinct minority.
Fat runners are rare.
what’s an energy chew?
Is it a caffeinated candy bar? Are only some substances tolerated in the running community?
Is it a chew toy? Is it swallowed (like food, our primary energy source)?

If you’re a fat runner for a long time, it means you have absolutely NO BRAINS AT ALL about how to eat.

The “writer” seems to have zero motivation to lose weight and wants to be accepted as a fat runner. But training for a sport should mean trying to achieve your ideal weight for that sport be it boxer, runner, jockey, or skateboarder. Of course people expect her to lose weight if she keeps up her running efforts. She needs to count calories and lose weight. She will be healthier at a lighter weight.
I thought runner’s world might address heart stress, blood pressure, and impact on joints, etc.
I think RUNNER’S WORLD is as PC as it can be so bashing “fat shaming” is more important than putting less stress on those joints, getting to a healthier weight, or taking pride in weight loss.

Yep. As far as I can tell, virtually ALL magazines have been taken over by PC lefties. It’s like the body snatchers. The first big one to fall was National Geographic. Then it filtered down and outward to the lesser publications. At this point nearly any magazine you pick up will have the same PC perspective. The conformity and uniformity is striking.
As a chunky guy, I’ve met a few people on top of mountains who can’t believe I made it. It’s usually a guy who says, “You made it, good job!” with the wife going, “John.....!” like he said something to embarrass me. I’m a victim? That’s a load of crap.
All of everything has been taken over by PC lefties. Go to American Eagle Outfitters. Fat models, ugly models, ....galore. The only thing missing are the pretty models.
